Yesterday, Tuesday, June 23rd, a civil disobedience took place in West Virginia to protest mountain top removal. Those arrested included: Daryl Hannah, Ken Hechler, Dr. James Hansen, Michael Brune and Judy Bonds. A halt to mountaintop removal is part of the platform of the state green party in West Virginia. And, an announcement of the civil disobedience had been made on a prominent, national green activist list.

On May 8th, the West Virginia Governor signed a bill to improve ballot access. Richard Winger of Ballot Access News says that West Virginia now has the best independent and minor party candidate petition deadline (for office other than president) than it has had since 1919.

On March 27th, the West Virginia House Judiciary Committee passed a bill that would cut the number of signatures an independent or minor party candidate would have to collect from 2% of all votes cast, to 1%. It also changed the petition deadline from May to August. Source: Ballot Access News.
