The 2009 winner, Ron Paul, was the overwhelming favorite, taking 52% of the vote. The 2010 was much closer with Adam Kokesh, Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) and Private Bradley Manning receiving the 2010 Free Patriot Peace Prize.

Much like the 2010 award, the voting in 2011 was extremely close, and just like on 2010 the 2011 Free Patriot Peace Prize will have multiple winners.

Joining Dr. Paul, Adam Kokesh, IVAW and Bradley Manning as Free Patriot Peace Prize winners are a former member of the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) who is also a longtime outspoken critic of unjust, undeclared wars and a nonprofit foundation founded in 1995 in response to the Bosnian War.

The award presentation will take place the first weekend of December in Phoenix, Arizona. It is my pleasure and honor to name Angela Keaton and AntiWar.com winners of the 2011 Free Patriot Peace Prize.

WHEREAS, the actions by the LNC appear to have exceeded its authority and is in gross violation of the guaranteed autonomy of a state party as stated in Article 6, Section 5 of the National Party Bylaws and Convention Rules adopted in convention in May 2010 in St. Louis, Missouri (National Convention);
WHEREAS, the LPGA ExCom finds the LNC has established a dangerous precedent by interfering in the actions of a state party; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Stewart Flood did previously refuse to read into the LNC records the LPGA motion dated December 1, 2008 regarding LPGA disapproval of the LNC activities regarding Angela Keaton; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Stewart Flood did previously refuse the re-quest of the LPGA to vote for the Libertarian Party’s National Convention for 2012 to be held with a Region 1 affiliate’s state; and,
WHEREAS, The delegates to the last National Convention from the Libertarian Party of Georgia, Inc. (LPGA) voluntarily joined Region 1 and elected Mr. Flood to represent the interests of this state party and the other the states which comprise Region 1; and,
WHEREAS, in light of these facts, Mr. Flood can no longer claim to represent the best interests of the LPGA.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF GEORGIA, INC, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The Chairman is hereby authorized to vote for the removal of Mr. Stewart Flood from the office of Representative for Region 1 to the LNC.
Section 2. The Chairman is hereby further authorized to speak with the State Chairs of Region 1 in order to encourage them to vote to remove Mr. Stewart Flood from the office of Representative for Region 1 to the LNC.
Section 3. The LPGA ExCom encourages the Chairman to vote for a replacement that he believes will best serve the interests of the LPGA.
Section 4. The LPGA ExCom directs its remaining representatives to read this resolution into the record and provide a copy to LNC Secretary Alicia Mattson for inclusion in the minutes of the next LNC meeting.

Wherefore, this Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately upon passage and shall continue to be in force until the close of Libertarian Party of Georgia’s annual convention on February 25, 2012, and no longer.

A one-day conference entitled The Future Of The Libertarian Political Movement was recently held on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the Highlander Inn in Manchester, New Hampshire. George Phillies organized the conference, co-sponsored by the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire and the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts, and promised to cover any losses. He had support from his State Committee, Angela Keaton and Rich Tomasso.

The conference keynote speaker was Judge John Buttrick of Arizona who spoke at the luncheon. Other featured speakers included Angela Keaton of AntiWar.com and Outright Libertarians; Joe Kennedy, Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate; Ernest Hancock, publisher of Freedom’s Phoenix; Mary Ruwart, author of “Healing our World” and member of the Libertarian National Committee, and Don Gorman, past LNC at-large representative, former Libertarian N.H. state representative and the most-elected libertarian in the country.

The conference featured the following panels and sessions, which were divided into two tracks:

■ Electronic Security and Activism in the Age of Anonymous

■ Campaigns for Congress and running large-scale campaigns

■ Future Outreach to Youth and Students

■ Future Outreach to the GLBTQ Community

■ Libertarians and the anti-war movement

■ Recruiting Candidates

The conference also featured the first debate of candidates seeking the Libertarian Party’s Presidential Nomination in 2012. To qualify for participation in the debate, candidates needed to prove they had an extended continuous record of Libertarian Party activism, completed their FEC filings and had a substantial campaign team in place. Three candidates qualified for participation: R. Lee Wrights of Texas, Carl Person of New York and Roger V. Gary of Texas. George Phillies moderated the debate.

The Massachusetts delegation promised to award one LPUS 2012 National Convention Delegate to the candidate who won the Straw Poll of attendees after the debate. Twenty-two people voted in the Straw Poll: 12 voted for R. Lee Wrights, 7 voted for Carl Person and 3 voted for Roger V. Gary. Wrights won the Massachusetts Delegate. The New Hampshire delegation caucused separately eventually committing one delegate to N.O.T.A. and one delegate to Albert Max Abramson, who declared his candidacy for the LP Presidential Nomination at the convention. Mr. Abramson was not permitted to participate in the debate and failed to mention to the convention attendees that he is currently a candidate running for State Representative in the Republican Primary in an upcoming Special Election.

Mary Ruwart, a member of the Libertarian National Committee, reported to conference attendees that membership in the Libertarian Party has recently been flat and only went up slightly during the past few months because Wes Benedict, Executive Director of the Libertarian National Committee, has been personally calling former members to ask them to renew. She stated most of the LNC is in denial about membership. George Phillies personally told me “a highly reliable source” told him Mark Hinkle. LP Chair, “is aware of the (membership) decline and blames it on Wayne’s (Wayne Allyn Root) bizarre and very public political stances”.

Despite the low attendance and the failure of conference attendees to offer possible solutions to address the decline in Libertarian Party membership, George Phillies was very positive about what the conference was able to accomplish. He said:

The convention was a fantastic success. We had better speeches, and more choices of panel, than you will see at any other libertarian convention this year.

Carl Person, one of the Presidential Debate Participants, had this reflection about the conference:

“George Phillies was a gracious host. He treated early-arriving participants to dinner on Saturday night and did an excellent job moderating the debate. The main point I walked away with is that the Libertarian Party must start to capture members from the ever-increasing number of voters who agree with libertarian principles and who are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the Republican and Democratic parties.”

The Future Of The Libertarian Political Movement conference was held on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the Highlander Inn located near the airport in Manchester, New Hampshire. Registration for the conference, which included meals, cost $100.00, although a half-day fee of $50.00 was also available.

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to you in my capacity as an At-Large Representative of the Libertarian National Committee (LNC), which is in receipt of your resolutions concerning Mr. Root. As you are probably aware, I attempted without success to have the Florida resolution placed on the agenda at the LNC meeting in New Orleans. Shortly thereafter, Idaho passed a virtually identical resolution.

As your At-Large Representative, I feel honor-bound to give you a response in the absence of one from the LNC as a whole. I understand that another state is considering passing a similar resolution, so a response seems necessary and timely.

Several LNC members, including myself, share your concerns. Mr. Root makes it abundantly clear in his 2009 book that he has little respect for liberals and gives the impression that only conservative-leaning individuals are welcome in the Libertarian Party (LP). I have attempted to do some damage control by posting reviews of his book that hopefully will correct that mistaken impression (http://www.amazon.com/review/R3TX5IAH0JSW5A/ref=cm_cr_pr_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=047045265X&nodeID=&tag=&linkCode=#wasThisHelpful).

Upon receiving the Florida resolution our late founder, Mr. David Nolan, put forward a resolution of his own which was passed at our New Orleans meeting. He told me specifically that he hoped that Mr. Root would take the hint and stop discouraging approximately half of the American public from seriously considering the LP.

You might recall that during the last LNC term Mr. Starr initiated proceedings against both Ms. Angela Keaton and Mr. Lee Wrights that were presumably intended to remove them from their At-Large positions. The delegates to the National Convention in St. Louis responded by giving his opponent for Treasurer a landslide victory.

I believe that this incident speaks to your resolution. Although At-Large Members can be removed “for cause,” the delegates frown on such removals without considerable justification. Consequently, even though I and others on the LNC are sympathetic to your concerns, I am unaware of any support, including my own, for removing Mr. Root for the reasons stated in your resolution.

However, if you feel strongly about Mr. Root’s comments, you have several avenues open to you. You can correct Mr. Root’s public statements as I have attempted to do. You can attempt to persuade him to change his behavior as LP founder, the late Mr. David Nolan, has tried to do. In addition, you and any LP members who share your views can attend the next national convention en masse and cast your votes for someone more to your liking. Mr. Starr’s fate has demonstrated that the delegates to a National Convention can effectively prevent the election of anyone who does not meet their expectations.

Our next convention also elects our 2012 presidential nominee; Mr. Root has clearly stated his intentions to run both in his book and on the air (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIeLgzWDekI at about 6:15 minutes). If you would rather not see Mr. Root in another leadership position, you may wish to attend the Las Vegas convention and vote for a candidate who better represents your views.

Leading Voices for Independent Politics Unite on April 26 for Landmark Event at University of Wisconsin at Madison

CHICAGO, Ill., April 20, 2010 – Next week, a distinguished group of panelists from across the American political spectrum will gather to discuss electoral reform, the peace movement, and the growing dissatisfaction with both Republicans and Democrats. Panelists include Theresa Amato, Angela Keaton, Ben Manski, Sean Scallon, Cindy Sheehan, and Christina Tobin. The event will be moderated by Steve Burns, Program Director of Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice. The event will be held on Monday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m in the Memorial Union at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

America’s two-party system dominates elections to the point where they act as one party. Both major parties support the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, while opposition to war and foreign intervention unite people across the political spectrum. The panel will examine how those opposed to war and military intervention can hear from and vote for candidates who share their views in the face of America’s restrictive ballot access laws.

Beginning with a fictional “Mimosa Party” to unite antiwar voters, the panelists will address the dangers of the Top Two Primary initiative on the ballot in California on June 8, 2010 and other ballot access restrictions imposed by the states. Without choices on the ballot in the general election, anti-war candidates will continue to be at a severe disadvantage when challenging pro-war incumbents.

As part of this event, the Rainbow Bookstore Cooperative will hold a book signing for Theresa Amato and Cindy Sheehan at 2:00 p.m earlier in the day on Monday.

About the Panelists

Cindy Sheehan is an American anti-war activist whose son, Specialist Casey Sheehan, was killed on April 4, 2004 while serving in the Iraq War. In August 2005, she attracted national and international media attention for her extended anti-war protest at a makeshift camp outside President George W. Bush’s Texas ranch, a stand which drew both passionate support and angry criticism. She is a vocal critic of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy, saying: “I don’t think much has changed since the Bush administration.”

Christina Tobin has devoted her life to protecting the rights of all people to vote and run for office. As Ralph Nader’s national ballot access coordinator in 2008, she has a deep knowledge of not only election laws, but also alternative approaches nationwide. She has helped gather over 500,000 signatures to ensure voters had a choice when they went to cast their vote. She has secured ballot lines for numerous independent candidates and alternative political parties including the Constitution, Democratic, Green, Libertarian, Republican and Socialist Equality parties. Tobin is founder and chair of The Free and Equal Elections Foundation, a nonpartisan, nonprofit, public policy and advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the rights of the politically marginalized and disenfranchised, particularly third party and independent voters and candidates. She also serves as the CEO of Free & Equal, Inc., a ballot access consulting and petitioning firm. Tobin is the Libertarian candidate for California secretary of state.

Theresa Amato served as national campaign manager and in-house counsel for Ralph Nader in his 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns. She is the author of Grand Illusion: The Myth of Voter Choice in a Two-Party Tyranny. In her new book, she provides a witty, thoughtful critique of the American electoral system. A graduate of Harvard University and NYU School of Law, she is the founder of the Citizen Advocacy Center. Amato lives in Oak Park, Illinois and is a mother and practicing lawyer.

Angela Keaton is the development director for Antiwar.com the Web’s leading source of antiwar news, views, and activities and the producer of the Scott Horton Show for Antiwar Radio. She also serves the national secretary of Outright Libertarians (GBTLQ caucus) and the chairwoman of the board of directors for the Ladies of Liberty Alliance (LOLA.) From 1999 to 2005, Keaton hosted “The Liberated Space,” the libertarian talk and news show on the controversial KOOP 91.7 FM, Austin. She holds a J.D. and M.A. from the University of Florida.

Ben Manski is an attorney and pro-democracy advocate. He serves as executive director of the Liberty Tree Foundation for the Democratic Revolution, a think-tank and organizing center he founded in 2004. Manski is also a principal attorney at Manski Law & Communications, LLC and an associate fellow with the Institute for Policy Studies. Politically engaged since his early childhood in Israel and Wisconsin, Manski has worked for a variety of causes, notably serving as co-chair of the Green Party of the United States, national director of the Campus Greens USA, and as midwest director for the Nader 2000 campaign. In 2001-2002, he was active on the steering committee that formed the major U.S. peace organization, United for Peace and Justice.

Sean Scallon is an author, journalist, blogger, and elected official in Pepin, Wisconsin. He is the author of Beating the Powers that Be: Independent Political Movements and Parties of the Upper Midwest and Their Relevance for Third Parties of Today. How’ve you been? I’m doing well. Been doing some serious thinking about the events of 2008. Hard thinking. Know many of you have been. The distance has given me some perspective. And while I am thrilled with the addition of Wes Benedict as Executive Director and the emergence of Rachel Hawkridge as the conscience of the LNC, that’s not enough to reverse over a decade of damage from poor financial choices, ideological drift and endless drama.

What would I do? I would go for something completely different. As someone who is for open borders, armed kids and ending the Fed yesterday, this is why I would urge George Phillies, raging moderate, to run for Chair:

First, Libertarian Party members saw a new side to George during the various scandals of 2007-2009. Out with the timid physics professor in the taupe cardigan and in with an intellectual power house who can go head to head in debates with policy wonks on the drug war, civil liberties and that most difficult to master of subjects, foreign policy. The Chair is a spokesperson who must be fast on his feet. George has proven he keeps his knowledge current.

Second, with George, members know exactly what they will get for their money-and yes, they do expect something. George can produce a news letter and a good bumper sticker which is more than they are getting for their 25$ in several affiliates. They know the books will be well kept. Hence, more willingness to donate. People want to give money to libertarian causes but they won’t shell out endlessly for vanity ballot access campaigns and imaginary college libertarian programs. We will give to libertarians who are making honest activist efforts at any level.

Third, delegates know George is a long time party activist. His libertarian credentials go back over twenty years. “Show me your creds” is a test that some big but relatively new names fail. The LP needs more stability and consistency; fewer gimmicks and short cuts.

Fourth, many radicals (from left-libs to paleos-yes, it’s true) resent the gay and race baiting that has become all too common in the LP. Supporting uninhibited free speech doesn’t mean encouraging the worst aspects of human nature. The libertarian movement has and always will have a quiet but sizable gay and bisexual contingent. Sure, some of us are willing to cut Ron Paul some slack, but that’s an earned privilege. For me, I am tired of being told that queer concerns have to wait until someone else’s pet issue is solved.

Finally, tonight the LP could have been a player. Did you hear the God King’s speech? 30,000 more troops. Would it have been great if we had a chair who understands principle of non intervention? George does. Don’t we deserve someone who stands up for libertarian principles on the most important issue of the day?

George is libertarian enough for this radical and certainly better than the pretenders who came sniffing around during the last presidential election cycle. He can count, too. Ideological coherence and administrative competence? That’s what I want. That’s what he offers.

George, if you are reading this, run for chair. For real, this time. Not as the aforementioned cardigan wearing professor but as the leader you proved yourself to be in Denver.

“The federal government does not recognize ‘domestic partnerships’ in federal law, through both legal precedent and statutes including the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA),” noted Outright Libertarians’ National Chair, Rob Power. “As a result, all federal tax exemptions and deductions for legally-married individuals in California would be nullified along with their legal marriages.”

Immediately after passage of the DPI, the federal income tax implications for the 48.5% of Californians over age 15 who are legally married would be staggering. According to Forbes Magazine, the benefits of the federal Working Families Relief Act include enhanced tax deductions for legally-married couples. The Tax Policy Center notes that asset transfers between spouses are free of transfer taxes at a federal level, and the IRS notes the ability for taxpayers to claim their spouses as dependents. Those provisions, in addition to other federal tax deductions and write-downs limited to legally married couples, equate to an average of $6,000 per individual spouse — with the total being significantly greater for higher-income families.

“Passage of the DPI, as endorsed by the Libertarian Party of California’s executive committee, would hand the married families of California a $130 billion higher tax bill in the first tax year after the passage of the initiative,” said Power. “Assuming Washington could address this problem with unprecedented speed — within 24 months of the passage of the DPI — Californians would pay an extra quarter-trillion dollars in federal taxes as a direct result of this bill. That’s the minimum amount, as well — if the Obama plan to pass the death tax succeeds, the total federal tax hike over those two years could approach $300 billion.”

The release continues taking the LPCA to task both for the noted consequences of the measure, and the manner in which the endorsement was passed:

“Higher federal taxes, in the wake of significant state tax increases, would drive countless Californians into severe financial difficulty,” said Angela Keaton, Outright’s California Representative. “It’s unconscionable and California Libertarians should be outraged at this irresponsible vote by their executive committee. The Libertarian Party is supposed to oppose tax increases, not endorse them.”

Libertarians typically oppose tax increases of all sorts. The Libertarian Party’s national platform, adopted by a majority vote of Libertarians in convention in 2008, calls for the wholesale elimination of the income tax and IRS. The Libertarian Party of California’s endorsement of a bill that would significantly increase federal income taxes runs completely counter to mainstream Libertarianism.

While the tax implications alone are massive, they are not the only consequence of passage of the DPI. The bill would also significantly increase the role of state and federal government in parenting and spousal health decisions. Since most states do not recognize “domestic partners,” individuals with a California marriage license in those states would find themselves unable to make decisions ranging from spousal health care (in the event of spousal incapacitation) to home schooling and child health decisions. Military families with California marriage licenses could also find themselves unable to live on base, ineligible to receive military employment health coverage, and even excluded from receiving casualty notices in the event of the injury or death of family members in active duty. Each of these consequences is also sharply in opposition to the Libertarian Party’s national platform.

“Libertarians around the country are absolutely astounded at the decision to endorse this bill,” said Ruth Bennett, Outright’s Vice Chair. “A bill that hikes federal taxes and increases state and federal interference in personal relationships is about as unLibertarian as you can get! This vote is a disaster and an embarrassment for Libertarians who believe that higher taxes, increased legal restrictions and bigger government are a bad thing.”

The Libertarian Party of California was a full partner in the No On 8 coalition to oppose Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment passed in 2008 that voided the equal protection clause of the California constitution vis-a-vis gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender families. In contrast, the motion to endorse the DPI was hurriedly made — without time for due consideration — and passed by a vote of the state party executive committee, above the objections of Outright’s Chair Rob Power (who was a member of the California LP Executive Committee and resigned following the DPI endorsement vote).

“The Libertarian position on this issue is simple,” said Power. “Our platform calls for removing government from personal relationships entirely. This initiative does not do that, instead leaving in place all of the intrusiveness that goes along with government marriage licenses, yet changing the name of the license to appease religious conservatives, thereby massively increasing California couples’ federal tax burden. The Libertarian Party of California should be voting to continue its commitment to repeal Proposition 8 and its restrictions on individual liberties. Instead, it chose to endorse a massive federal tax hike and enable even greater government interference in the most intimate decisions of California families of all types. It’s hard to imagine a more disastrous and anti-Libertarian outcome.”

Angela Keaton resigned her At-large seat on the LNC shortly after their December meeting, during which she was subjected to a silly and unimportant disciplinary hearing, orchestrated by LNC Region 4 Representative Stewart Flood. Michael Seebeck reports on the meeting on page 1 of this issue, along with links.

Most of the charges against Angela were of her publicly criticizing the LP and its leaders, with her usual irreverent wit. She’d also joined a Boston Tea Party Facebook account, thus lending support to a competing political party. (Whereas Bob Barr only contributed millions of PAC dollars to GOP candidates running against LP candidates, while he sat on the LNC. Small potatoes compared to a Facebook account.)

Yes, Angela speaks freely and doesn’t care if she offends. She can be abrasive and blunt and impolitic. She does not easily tolerate fools. She asks tough questions of LP leaders, and demands strict adherence to principles. A no-nonsense nun, ever ready to smack mushy-headed libertarians with her ruler. Or with a funny zinger.

I wasn’t at the LNC meeting, but like others, I followed it live on IndependentPoliticalReport.com. IPR eyewitnesses reported that, as Flood presented his “evidence,” attending activists began to laugh. So did some LNC members. Flood grew ever more irate, which increased the laughter, which further incensed Flood.

Judging by the laughs, the funniest exhibit in Flood’s case against Angela was a photoshopped image of her and LP Treasurer Aaron Starr, posted on Angela’s Anarchist Bitch blog, captioned: “Luka Skywalker meets her father, Darth Herr Vader.”

In describing the event, Thomas Knapp said: “Stewart Flood’s presentation of ‘charges’ and ‘evidence’ against Ms. Keaton came off as the clown show it was. Accounts from on the spot describe open laughter from the audience and a public near-nervous-breakdown on the part of Flood himself. Keaton acquitted herself quite well, speaking in her own defense… She denied the LNC’s authority to dictate what opinions she would express or how she would express them,”

Flood’s resolution moved to suspend Angela’s LNC membership, to be rescinded upon her submitting a letter, for publication in the LP News, apologizing for a laundry list of alleged misdeeds.

Rather than suspend or clear Angela, the LNC sent the matter to committee for further investigation. To which Angela replied: “I will under no circumstances submit to any committee investigation.”

Angela resigned a day or so later. She cited health reasons. Eric Garris, her boss at Antiwar.com, issued a letter saying that Angela’s LNC work was interfering with her duties at Antiwar.com, and she must choose one or the other.

I’ve heard rumors that Garris was merely offering Angela a gracious excuse to exit. One longtime Los Angeles LP officer opined to me, “I think Angela just got tired of all the petty b*llsh*t on the LNC, and said ‘to hell with it.’ And I don’t blame her.”

Angela Keaton will now devote her full time to Antiwar.com and the cause of world peace. The LP’s loss is humanity’s gain.

On December 13, 2008, the California Secretary of State issued the official results for the 2008 presidential race, write-in votes included. They are:

The top six names appeared on the California ballot as candidates for the Democratic, Republican, Peace and Freedom, Libertarian, American Independent, and Green Parties, respectively. The latter four were officially certified write-in candidates.

Most Californians were unaware that Ron Paul was a certified write-in candidate and that votes for him would be counted. Even so, Paul pulled over 17,000 votes — without appearing on the ballot, without a current campaign, without the public even knowing that he was a viable option.

Imagine how many votes Paul would have won had the public known that write-in votes for him would count?

And how many additional votes had Paul been on the ballot?

Even many Libertarians were unaware of Paul’s official write-in status. Some told me after the election: “I’d have voted for Paul, had I known my vote would count.”

Chuck Baldwin was the Constitution Party’s write-in candidate. The American Independent Party (which had been the CP’s California affiliate) split over the war issue. Baldwin supported the CP/AIP’s traditional noninterventionist position. Alan Keyes was the choice of the pro-war faction. A California court ruled that the Keyes faction was the legitimate AIP representative, so Keyes’s name appeared on the ballot.

James Harris ran on the Socialist Workers Party. Frank Moore ran on the Just Makes Sense Party. Moore has been described as a “performance artist,” so his campaign might have been an extension of that, rather than a serious political endeavor. His running mate was cable access TV “sex therapist,” Dr. Susan Block.

Curiously, both Harris and Moore received under 55 write-in votes. One must obtain signatures from 55 pledged electors to be a certified write-in candidate in California, so it seems that even their electors didn’t want to “waste their votes” on Harris and Moore.

On December 14, the Constitution Party’s Bill Lussenheide reported on IndependentPoliticalReport.com: “There were three counties in California that did NOT count the write in votes for either Chuck Baldwin or Ron Paul. [And presumably, not for Harris and Moore.] Their totals should not be considered complete. [They are] Del Norte County, Mono County and San Benito County.”

So it seems that Paul received more votes than recorded in the state’s “official” report. Which is somehow poetically appropriate, considering the candidate and the state.

As Joseph Stalin reputedly said: “It’s not who votes that counts. It’s who counts the votes.”

* LP Conventions

I congratulate the LNC on one good decision. The 2010 LP national convention will be held in St. Louis. Good choice. A cheap locale for most povertarians, conveniently situated in the middle of the continental U.S., and not in some pricey state like Hawaii, or on an expensive cruise ship. Room rates are $109 a night.

The LPC state convention will be held this April, in Visalia, California. That’s near Fresno.

“…my state chair (Dave Blau) had a phone call from the LNC Acting Director, and in one of the early sentences the first two words form Mr. Krauss’s [sic] lips were, I am told, “please” and “disaffiliate”.”

The Massachusetts LP has passed resolutions at odds with the national LP leadership:

Libertarian Party of Massachusetts Resolution on LNC Acts

The LPMass State Committee, having read in detail of events at the December Libertarian National Committee meeting, has passed a resolution responding to the National Committee actions. The resolution was drafted by a committee of the whole, and passed without objection.

The resolution as passed reads:

Whereas, the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts and five other state affiliates of the national Libertarian Party urged the Libertarian National Committee — in the words of the Libertarian Party of Nevada — to drop its vendetta against Angela Keaton and — in the words of the Libertarian Party of Tennessee — turn its attention to proper and necessary Libertarian Party business such as membership growth, finances, campaigns, advancing public policy in a libertarian direction, and increasing awareness of Libertarianism, and,

Whereas furthermore, the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire categorically and unambiguously informed the Libertarian National Committee that the charge against Keaton related to New Hampshire was totally false and devoid of merit, and

Whereas furthermore, the Libertarian National Committee took no notice in its meeting of these recommendations, and

Whereas furthermore, the actions of the Libertarian National Committee drove National Committee At-Large member Angela Keaton to resign from the Committee, and

Whereas furthermore, the Libertarian National Committee passed a new budget providing nothing for Affiliate Support, Ballot Access, Brand Development, Campus Outreach, or Lobbying, and next to nothing for Candidate Support, therefore

Mindful of its historical leadership role within the libertarian movement, a role readily traced back to the battles of Concord and Lexington and the abolitionist movement, not to mention Massachusetts’s record as the first state to abolish slavery, legalize gay marriage, and its recent success in decriminalizing marijuana possession,

the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts therefore resolves:

First, we counsel the Libertarian National Committee that, for the good of the Party, the Libertarian National Committee should ensure in appointing Keaton’s replacement that the replacement is as anti-war and as socially liberal as Ms. Keaton, so that the balance on the National Committee between the party’s various factions and interests is not altered and continues to reflect the mixture of votes cast at the most recent National Convention, and

Second, we urge supporters of the libertarian political movement to respond to the Libertarian National Committee’s actions by redirecting your future donations away from the Libertarian National Committee. Donate instead to libertarian groups that do real politics and political education, such as your state Libertarian Party, and national groups such as Freedom Ballot Access and the Advocates for Self-Government.

Massachusetts LP passes resolution supporting Keaton

MASSACHUSETTS PASSES RESOLUTION SUPPORTING KEATON

Whereas, Angela Keaton was elected with the strong support of the delegates at the 2008 Libertarian National Convention, and

Whereas furthermore, the lack of performance of the Libertarian Party this past election cycle, under what should have been ideal electoral circumstances, should be cause for serious reflection, and

Whereas furthermore, spending the valuable meeting time of the Libertarian National Committee on personality disputes brings the National Committee and hence our party into disrepute, therefore

Be it resolved, that the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts calls upon the Libertarian National Committee to decline to consider resolutions suspending Angela Keaton, and

Be it further resolved, that the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts commends to the Libertarian National Committee the desirability of spending its precious meeting time on important issues that may advance our party,

Be it further resolved, that the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts urges the Libertarian National Committee to spend that time, instead, on contemplating the substantive objectives of its budget and volunteer mobilization programs for the next year, and

For if the National Committee does not do so, the members of our voluntary organization may eventually conclude that alternative organizational structures are required if the Libertarian political movement is to advance.

The state party also considered, but did not pass, a resolution calling for the suspension of the LNC membership of chair Bill Redpath.

In Sexual harassment at National: What to do about it, Haugh writes:

… the one question I really wanted asked has not been addressed at all. How can women safely and fairly exercise leadership at the national level of our party?

My reaction was so severe because the juxtaposition of events brought into focus a problem within our party of which we do not speak. If the clumsy hearing of the Resolution of Discipline against Angela Keaton had happened in isolation, I would still be upset but not moved enough to write so publicly about it. If M Carling had been named our party’s Parliamentarian with no other context, I might not have been upset at all. The fact that they both happened at the same meeting is the cause of my outrage.

Haugh continues,

Carling has a simple path out of this. All he has to do is openly admit what he did. If he does so, I would support public forgiveness of him.

Redpath’s way out is even simpler. All he has to do is rescind his appointment of Carling as Parliamentarian of the Libertarian Party.

The LNC’s way to resolve the immediate issue is also easy. They must not allow Carling a seat at their table until truth and reconciliation have taken place.

In another article co-written with LNC member Lee Wrights, Haugh goes on to say

Our silence has even damaged Carling more than if we had done the right thing and spoken out at the time. Three and a half years is time enough for someone in his position to atone for what he did and return to the good graces of the membership. Instead of serving that time, and restoring his good name through reformed behavior, something he did years ago has come back to haunt him.

And now that two of the co-conspirators have broken their silence, the damage is greater than it would have been if the truth had been revealed at the time. Some involved have risen to more prominent roles within the party and stand to lose more than they could have if we had done the right thing at the proper time. Once again, we find our “sin of silence” haunting us.

By not speaking up when these events occurred, we have lost three and a half years to address the underlying problems. If we had brought these problems to light then, maybe we would have a much healthier party today. We realize now if we had done the right thing almost four years ago, we could have avoided the shame of our sin.

The most recent installment in the series, LNC region 7 rep Rachel Hawkridge writes, Women make good leaders too!:

My first contact with the LNC occurred at the costume party in Denver, where one member of the LNC walked past me, fixated on my cleavage, leered and said “Va-va-voom!” When I attempted to engage my esteemed colleague in conversation, he was so enamored with said cleavage that he couldn’t focus on my face, and directed a few mono-syllabic words at my chest.

In dealing with State Chairs for region formation, I spoke to several (I need to point out here that none of them are my current State Chairs!) who appeared to have an attitude of superiority, and adopted a “just a woman” attitude. Several women at Denver gave me input about various State Chairs and other officers. “He hits on all of us”, “he makes me uncomfortable”, “he leers”, “he drools.” And even more troubling “Women don’t go to LP events in (our state or city) because they get hit on, or nobody listens . . . ”

On at least two occasions, our Presidential candidate leered at me, and then when he realized I was a party member, he proceeded to ignore me.

An internationally known female author, and blogger for Newsweek, came to our convention in Denver and was treated rather disdainfully. One of those who didn’t pay much mind to her questions was an LNC member.

Later, the same blogger came to a Presidential fundraiser. The candidate treated her like she was not worthy of his time or attention.

That blogger is a Jungian scholar, internationally known author and psychotherapist. She’s been published in (IIRC) 32 languages and 35 countries. Who knows whether Bob Barr treated her poorly because she’s just a blog, or because she’s a woman? We might have gotten a really great story out of it. We were lucky that she didn’t publish anything else on him. “After all,” she said, “he’s not interesting, and no one will vote for him anyway!”

I have found it particularly telling that in the last few days, as we have dealt with nothing *but* issues of sexual harassment, one member of this committee [LNC] has made references to pornography, and another has sent me off-color humor. And when informed that I found these to be inappropriate, one argued with me. The other pointed out that Mary Ruwart liked the joke.

Hawkridge recommends confronting the problem with “Absolute Honesty,” applying principles such as “The Worst Truth Beats the Best Lie,” “Don’t Kill the Messenger,” “Use Constructive Confrontation,” and more. She concludes,

My husband, longtime member and party stalwart, Gene says-

I know we all hate “political correctness” – but this isn’t about that. This is about polite, respectful, and gentlemanly behavior. It is about treating your sisters as the equals that they are.

And Rachel replies that it is *not* “political correctness” – it is, at a fundamental level, how we feel about, and as a result, how we treat, women.

And it’s a long way from treating women as intelligent, reasoning and capable adults.

As far as the fallout from the articles:

There was some speculation in IPR reactions to the initial article by Haugh that he had either already been told he would be fired at the San Diego LNC meeting, or would be fired as a result of his article. However, this past weekend, a former LPHQ staffer told me that in fact the chair can not fire HQ staff, other than the executive director, and that only the executive director can fire other HQ staff. He was not sure how these rules apply at present, since Kraus is not Executive Director, only Acting Executive Director. IPR has not yet found out whether Haugh has been reprimanded for violating an LPHQ policy forbidding staff from commenting on party controversies on blogs, or whether the policy has been rescinded.

In further fallout from the publication of the articles, there is some speculation that there could be unspecified repercussions for LNC members involved, especially At Large Rep Lee Wrights, who is the
editor of Liberty For All and co-author with Haugh of one of the articles. Some anonymous sources have claimed that the Keaton charges and resignation were just the first in a series of attacks by the dominant faction on the LNC to “clean house” and remove opposing votes on the committee.

West Virginia LP chair Matt Harris writes,

I think we need to issue a release in support of Bill Redpath. A big part of Haugh’s assault was that Redpath chose to deal with the Keaton matter openly and in public. Bill Redpath should be commended for that. Instead, both Redpath personally, and the very notion of transparency within the LNC, were attacked by Haugh in his post.

Haugh wrote,

Redpath allowed Flood to air his charges in an open meeting,…..Redpath had other options to take prompt and necessary steps to investigate the matter, but instead chose to hold the
hearing in open session in the most divisive way imaginable. Indeed, one such option, to create a reconciliation subcommittee of the LNC, was proposed by Vice Chair Mike Jingozian and approved as the method of formal resolution to this matter by the LNC.”

LPTC founder George Donnelly fired back with the following suggestion (not currently an official position of the caucus):

Whereas the LP Transparency Caucus wants a Libertarian Party where secrecy and mistrust have been banished because members have free, timely access to information on the administration of the party;

Whereas accomplishing this goal sometimes requires that individuals make tough decisions to come forward when none others dare; and

Whereas LP Political Director and member Sean Haugh has recently released previously unknown details of sexual harassment allegations involving a former Libertarian National Committee member and current Parliamentarian: now therefore, be it

Resolved, the LP Transparency Caucus applauds Mr Haugh for bringing these allegations to light.

Whereas the LP Transparency Caucus has been founded in the hopes of fostering a cohesive Libertarian Party where members of all factions can participate knowing that decisions are made in the sunshine – not the dark – by fostering greater openness and accountability in the running of the national Libertarian Party;

Whereas Angela Keaton resigned her At-Large Representative seat on the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) on December 8;

Whereas it has been reported that the LNC is currently considering only one candidate to fill the vacancy created by Ms Keaton’s resignation;

Whereas multiple candidates have expressed interest in being considered for the vacancy; and

Whereas the party is best served by an open, competitive and fair selection process: now therefore, be it

Resolved, the LP Transparency Caucus strongly urges LNC members to publicly solicit candidates for the vacancy and hold an open election.

The Resolution of Discipline against Angela Keaton by Stewart Flood presented at the LNC Meeting in San Diego, December 6-7, 2008, included several allegations of sexual harassment. As a personal witness to many of the events and statements alleged by Flood, I can testify that many of these comments by Keaton could indeed be classified as “sexual innuendo,” “leering,” or “graphic discussions about sexual matters.” Yet unlike Carling’s past behavior, nothing I witnessed could be described as “propositions.”

Furthermore, none of her comments could be described as “the harassment (having) the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with the employee’s work performance or creating an environment that is intimidating, hostile or offensive to the employee.” To be honest, all of us on staff found Keaton’s comments quite entertaining and inoffensive.

The attack by Flood failed directly, but succeeded indirectly by making Keaton’s life so miserable that she can no longer serve on the LNC. Flood got Keaton off the board by destroying her life.

However, the fault here lies not with Flood, but with the Chair of the LNC, Bill Redpath.

Redpath allowed Flood to air his charges in an open meeting, even though he knew most, if not all, of the charges were false. This came at the expense of time to be spent on the real business of the party, including the budget.

Redpath took no steps whatsoever to “protect the individual’s confidentiality, as much as possible,” as stated in the policy. Just the opposite, all alleged victims of Keaton’s actions were openly named by Flood’s presentation, some explicitly against their permission.

Redpath had other options to “take prompt and necessary steps to investigate the matter,” but instead chose to hold the hearing in open session in the most divisive way imaginable. Indeed, one such option, to create a reconciliation subcommittee of the LNC, was proposed by Vice Chair Mike Jingozian and approved as the method of formal resolution to this matter by the LNC.

As he left the meeting, Redpath’s last act was to appoint M Carling as the Parliamentarian of the Libertarian Party, giving him a non-voting seat at the table.

Bill Redpath was an at-large member of the LNC during the events covered by the original article. He is fully aware of all the events that led to the current LNC policy against sexual harassment.

The message is loud and clear. With Bill Redpath as our Chair, it is open season on women in leadership or on staff of the Libertarian National Committee. People such as Keaton who crusade against sexual and gender bias within the party will be run out of town on a rail. Meanwhile, men who have a history of real sexual harassment will be protected and even promoted by Bill Redpath.

While this is going to sound unexpected coming from a lesbian feminist, I need to tend to the men in my life. Tomorrow is the anniversary of Eric Garris’ purchase of a little domain name, antiwar.com. The responsibility and mission to which my dear friend Scott Horton and I have been entrusted by Mr. Garris is my life’s work. Besides, Brian Doherty has placed a great expectation upon me. Every time I open Radicals for Capitalism, that description, “Freedom Fighter, Wife” is not a sentimental jest but an imperative. Time for me to live up to it.

This is to confirm that I have resigned my position on the Libertarian National Committee.

I did not do this as a result of pressure from either Mr. Garris or the LNC. In fact, a few LNC members apologized for any part they may have played in this. However, as long as Redpath, Sullentrup and Starr remain in office, donors will continue to have serious questions about administrative competence, staff neutrality and most importantly ideological coherence.

While I won Saturday’s battle, I had no intention of sitting through yet another round of investigative nonsense only to be told that I was “unprofessional” because I dared say publically what so many of you say in private. While I have nothing but the greatest respect for so many of you, I was the one
who delivered the complaints to Redpath and his cohort directly. I was the one who took the brunt of purge. And a brunt it was.

This is not an HR issue. Actually, Eric Garris not only defended me as my employer but he was willing to do what only a dear friend would do: Save my life.

Eric was aware, as were some of you, that my physical health had begun to deteriorate rapidly after the last three months of harassment by the proxies of the Barr and Root factions. Vomiting blood should not be the reward for pointing out the inept, incompetent and insidious. I went to San Diego to demand that these saboteurs look me in eye. I stood up to the bullies and won but it came at a price. I refuse to give up another moment of my life to these bastards.

For those of among you that I count as my friends, today is my birthday. The greatest gift you can give me is to accept that I have done all I can do to save what remains of the Libertarian Party, and that you will continue our struggle.

Garris says the charges against Keaton are “laughable” and that Keaton’s ongoing involvement with the LNC is detrimental to her “real work for liberty” at Antiwar.com. Ms. Keaton apparently agrees, as she has decided to resign from the LNC. She has also requested that the letter below from Eric Garris be made public.

Dear Angela,

I have always been in favor of Antiwar.com’s associates and employees maintaining relationships with other institutions in the libertarian movement, but your involvement with the Libertarian Party National Committee (LNC) has become too big a burden on you and too big an embarrassment for me to accept anymore. Working with the LP on the local level, supporting various candidates and other such activities is be fine. But it is now clear that the LNC has become an embarrassment to the movement, the principles the LP is supposed to represent, and to Antiwar.com by virtue of our association.

As you know, I am not a sectarian. I have always strived to bridge gaps on organizational and ideological lines within the freedom and antiwar movements. In my libertarian activism, I have worked with a range of people from different organizations and factions. I despise the petty sectarianism, personal grudges and ego-driven squabbles that divide those of us who should be working together.

At Antiwar.com, we encourage dialogue and collaboration among people from across the spectrum so long as they share an interest in the goal of non-interventionism. We pride ourselves on featuring paleocons, progressives, left-radicals, minarchists, anarchists, constitutionalists, and others who join us in our struggle for a more peaceful foreign policy. We do not all agree on everything, even on the war issue, but it is important to have as big a tent as possible while still sharing our basic political values. And I have the same attitude toward the libertarian movement.

But the LNC, in its attempts to water down the message, has ironically become the most isolated group in the libertarian movement. Whereas once the LP was the epicenter of the movement, its leadership has tragically turned this once great and proud political party into a laughing stock. The party of principle has become the embarrassing sideshow.

The “controversy” regarding your involvement with the LNC is an indication of the general problem with the national organization. They have become obsessed with policing private behavior, maintaining control over personality, and purging all radical thought from the center of the party. Private organizations have a right to behave in this way, but it is peculiar that the LP leadership would have such difficulty understanding the types of values one would hope would be commonly embraced by a libertarian organization – individualism, personal privacy, a reasonable level of organizational transparency, and of course libertarian ideals. In particular, the abusive use of executive sessions and bizarre practices of ensuring lockstep conformity elicit images of Communist organizing back in the 1960s. Always afraid of the LP becoming a debating society, the moderates in charge have instead turned it into a cult altogether isolated from the broader movement and mainstream society.

I regret this, but for all these reasons I must insist that you to resign from the LNC. Otherwise, we would have no choice but to reconsider your employment with Antiwar.com. As I said, your involvement, through no fault of your own, has brought some embarrassment to Antiwar.com and is a distraction from the movement at large. We have a new administration to grapple with soon. The politicians are planning more wars, more invasions of our rights, and more nationalizations of the economy. We all have bigger fish to fry and we need you with us, fighting for peace, not with the LNC, defending your integrity against those who don’t deserve your time.

In my estimation this is an internal political pogrom whose results may render the very fabric of our enterprise inoperable or at the very least permanently unpalatable to a large segment of membership. If we cannot function with a general transparency and proceed to render verdict or judgment without reasonable due process, I would consider such resolutions as necessary for potential secession of affiliates as reasonable and with proper cause. If a duly elected official from a body at large is castigated, maligned and subsequently removed without proper recourse or representation, perhaps the real injury and purpose of such ‘political’ alignment, merits deep review and consideration by all those involved.
