Nader backers submit signatures in Tennessee, West Virginia

Independent presidential hopeful Ralph Nader continues to seek ballot access across the U.S. West Virginia’s Charleston Gazette reports Nader backers submitted about 7,500 more signatures in that state Friday, adding to the “more than 17,000 names” they have already submitted. Nearly 12,000 have already been validated; 15,118 valid signatures are required. In Tennessee, Nader supporters submitted 584 signatures on Friday, the AP reports. Tennessee “requires the signatures of 275 registered voters to qualify.”

Meanwhile, Nader himself campaigned in South Carolina, a state where he is expected to be on the ballot, on Friday. The AP reports Nader, speaking at the statehouse in Columbia, said he “wants a national health care plan, minimum wage increases and a six-month deadline for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. Nader says most Americans agree with him on those issues but restrictions make it hard for third-party candidates to run.”

For those wondering, the Mountain Party of West Virginia associated itself with the National Green Party a couple of years back, giving Cynthia McKinney a spot on the ballot in West Virginia. Apparently Bob Barr my not get there, although Chuck Baldwin is within hailing distance, I guess.
