Sunday April 19th in NYC: Panel on Afghanistan at Left Forum

The Socialist Party USA (NYC Local) panel at the Left Forum 2009  is titled “Not our war: Afghanistan and the Challenges for the Global Peace Movement

Chairing the panel will be Kristin Schall, Chairperson, NYC Local of the Socialist Party USA. The panelists will be: Helmuth Markov, MEP European Parliament, Die Linke; David McReynolds, Anti-war activist, War Resisters League, Socialist Party USA; and Jonas Sjostedt, ex-MEP European Parliament, Swedish Left Party, United for Peace and Justice.

The global tide of political opinion has clearly turned against the continuing US occupation of Iraq.  Current US President Barack Obama campaigned on a pledge to build a roadmap for the removal of troops. However, the future of the US-led occupation of Afghanistan is far less certain.  Obama has promoted an increase in troop size while hawkish pundits present the region as the real location of the war against terrorism.  Yet, as European Social-Democratic and Socialist parties prepare electoral alliances to combat the global economic recession, one issue continues to be a point of contention – support for the occupation of Afghanistan.

This panel seeks to bring important features of this European debate on Afghanistan to the US in order to foster a dialogue between anti-war activists.  Building links across the Atlantic may be a key part of re-energizing the anti-war movement and exposing the weaknesses in the arguments for a continuance of war and occupation.

Cool story as for me. It would be great to read something more concerning that matter.

If memory serves me fairly well, I remember Clinton’s cruise missile attack on OBL in Afghan. I believe it was 1998. Approximate numbers: 40 missiles at @$1mil each. I wondered whether there was some alternative at about that cost. What about dropping 40 million $1 bills? It would get randomly distributed presumably. It should stimulate the Afghan economy; but enough to make a significant difference? I do not know. But paulie has taken it upon himself to be one of my main public detractors. Recently for some reason Tom K. has joined him. I’m hoping for a supportive counter reaction. I guess we’ll see.

I’ve proposed making Afghanistan a colony-state. Via treaty of course, not by conquer>annex. That would quickly bring them out of the Stone Age (economic parity) & bring USA colonists & soldiers to protect them in country. Further a simple land purchase (2 new states) from Pakistan could provide land bridge to sea/port and could be bundled with a Treaty or Agreement with Pakistan. This is on my 2008 campaign website which is still up.
