Libertarian Party blog: StimulusWatch.org dissects the pork

Posted to LP.org blog by Donny Ferguson. Reposted to IPR by Paulie.

Have you every wondered just what exactly is in Barack Obama’s massive government spending plan, now estimated by the Congressional Budget Office to end up costing over $1 trillion?

The creators of StimulusWatch.org have taken the Obama proposal and broken it down by project, and the sheer amount of high-cost, low-job creation pork-barrel spending is amazing.

Log on to www.StimulusWatch.org for yourself and browse the bill.

My hometown of Beaumont, Texas is getting $5,000,000.00 in taxpayer money to turn landfill gas emissions into hydrogen.  It only creates 50 jobs.  That’s a total cost of $100,000.00 per job working at a landfill, if it actually does what’s promised.

Albuquerque, New Mexico is getting more half a billion dollars in taxpayer money to build a solar power plant, creating only 200 jobs.  That comes out to $2,660,000.00 for each new job, if it even creates that many.

Laurel, Maryland is getting nearly $100,000.00 to hire two people to install doorbells.  Yes, close to $50,000.00 per person to install doorbells.

Chula Vista, California is getting half a million dollars to hire seven people to build a dog park.

A better use of the Senate’s time would be to lower taxes on job creators, allowing them to create long-term jobs and revive the economy instead of putting taxpayers on the hook for over a trillion dollars to expand governement and create largely short-term employment.  The United States currently has the second-highest such taxes in the world.

Log on for yourself and take a look at the bill.  No wonder support for the government expansion plan is dwindling.

Just to be clear: StimulusWatch.org does not list projects proposed by the Obama Administration. What it lists is the requests made by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Once the stimulus bill is passed, the Obama administration will have to decide which of these projects to fund. That’s where you can help by providing descriptions on the projects and registering your thoughts on the mayors’ proposed projects.

    Thanks for the link!
