Libertarian Party asks Congress to give everyone a “Tim Geithner tax break”

Nominee’s problems a sign tax code should be scrapped

Washinton, D.C. — Congress should give all taxpayers a “Tim Geithner tax break” by significantly simplifying the Internal Revenue Code, Libertarian National Committee chairman Bill Redpath said Monday.

“Congress should make sure what happened to Mr. Geithner, a finance professional, won’t continue to happen to millions of average folks,” said Redpath.

“If the man running the IRS can’t understand the tax code with a computer helping him, how can the average taxpayer hope to do his taxes without breaking the law?,” asked Redpath.

“This should be a clear signal the Internal Revenue Code is broken beyond repair and must be repealed. Millions of taxpayers hope this new administration will bring meaningful change to federal tax laws,” said Redpath.

Redpath asked Congress to scrap the Internal Revenue Code and replace it with a fair, simple system that doesn’t require professional accountants or complex software.

Geithner faces criticism for not paying self-employment taxes while working as a contractor for the International Monetary Fund. Geithner claims it was an honest error made while calculating his taxes using a popular tax preparation software program.

It’s a real shame that either the GOP or LP weren’t able to capitalize on this and push for reform of the tax code.

The biggest problem wanted to make the issue that Geithner was a “criminal”

If we has used this issue to say something like, “The tax code is too complicated. See, even the nominee for Treasury can’t get it right. Let’s get reform”, we could have done something good. We could’ve gained traction because people understand how complicated the tax code is, and this would have been the perfect illustration.

Instead, Republicans used the failed strategy of trying to say Geithner was a tax cheat and deserved to be prosecuted. Now, he’s been confirmed and the issue is moot. Thanks to some Republicans, we have completely lost an opportunity.

Where’s the vitriol? Where’s the hatred? You all were just spewing out of your lips under Bush. Now, Obama plans to grow government twice as fast, and it’s just, well, we should issue sarcastic press releases, and maybe be critical here and there.

Man, you all are such blithering hypocrites, it’s sickening!”

LOL! If anything, I think that the Libertarian Party (as in LP National/LNC) was too easy on Bush. Remember, back in the ’90s LP National issued a press release that called for Bill Clinton to be impeached. LP National never had the balls issue a press release to call for Bush to be impeached.

Yeah, Obama sucks. Every libertarian already knows this. I’m sure that things will get worse the longer he’s in office.

Thanks Eric. Now crawl back under whatever hole you came from.

I heard Donny Ferguson on my local radio station (610 WTVN, Columbus Ohio) explaining this in the morning. That’s some good news!

Can you imagine the furor if this Geithner guy had been a Bush appointee? My gosh, the media would be screaming bloody murder. And LP Libertarians would be joining in.

But it’s Obama, so he gets just a little mild criticism.

This is actually a rather clever, almost tongue in cheek, news release that is reminiscent of those sent out during the Dasbach reign at LPHQ.

Say what you will about Dasbach, but he DID get quite a bit of positive media attention focused on the LP.

Let’s hope LPHQ keeps up the good work!

    PEACE

Tim Geithner is not my choice to be Secretary of the Treasury. My actual choice will shock all of you when it is released later today or tomorrow.
