This claim in Alabama is absurd. There is a petition that can be done in Alabama for general party ballot access for the entire state, and if this petition is completed you can run candidates for any partisan office in Alabama, and you do not have to submit petitions for each individual candidate for district offices. So why can you not submit general party ballot access petitions by counties, and then run candidates for whatever partisan offices are up in those counties? Also, why did they lead you to believe that you could do this before these petition drives started, and why are they now changing their minds?

It sounds to me like the establishment politicians in Alabama are nervous. They see that the Libertarian Party is starting to be more active there, so they are looking for a way to squash it before it can do anything further to get ahead.

    Exactly.

News that the Railway Retirement Board has a SWAT team may be of some interest to some people and be usable for Libertarian campaigns
    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/may/28/inside-the-ring-directive-outlines-obamas-policy-t/?page=1

Wow! Why does the Railway Retirement Board needs its own SWAT Team?

I think that it is pretty clear that a police state is being erected around us. There is lots of scary stuff going on behind the scenes with the government, and at some point the fit is going to hit the shan.

Alabama LP is now up to 21 candidates officially nominated. A few days remaining to sign up more.

Major screw job underway, SOS office now says congressional and legislative candidates would have needed separate petitions for each race despite countywide access covering all of their districts and will now not be on. We are looking at presenting evidence of precedents to try to change their minds, and exploring the possibility of a lawsuit (consulting attorneys now).”

What????? This is not what they told you when the petition drives started.

This weekend the Working Famlies Party in New York State is holding their convention where they will nominate candaites for statewide office. Including for Governor, A few days ago the NYS Green Party candaite, Howie Hawkins sent the WFP a letter suggesting the GP and WFP unite, and nominate Hawkins. Today it seems the WFP is looking to nominate progressivist education activist, Diane Ravitch. I’ll believe it when I see it! I’m still not convinced the WFP will run a candaite against Cuomo.

The Libertarian Party needs to come up with some new awards. Here are some suggestions:

Government Whistle Blower Award (I nominate Edward Snowden for blowing the whistle on the NSA domestic spy program.)

Best Libertarian Party State Affiliate (The criteria here would be a combination of which state affiliate has increased its number of dues paying members, votes, and elected Libertarians (for both partisan and non-partisan offices) during the 2 year periods in between national conventions.)

Best Libertarian Campus Club (This would be for the college campus club that increases its number of members by the biggest percentage during the 2 year period in between conventions (or some such period)). Another criteria could be which campus clubs do the most activist events on campus during a given time period. The club would not have to be officially affiliated with the Libertarian Party, but would have to be based on libertarian principles. Young Americans for Liberty and Students for Liberty would obviously qualify, as would any similar campus clubs if there are any out there.)

Best Libertarian Video (Libertarians would be encouraged to make videos about the Libertarian Party, or about a Libertarian stance on an issue, and post them online to YouTube, etc… The video that gets the most hits during a specified amount of time wins the prize.)

I would suggest that there be actual prizes given out, like engraved plaques, free trips to the national convention, and maybe even some cash.

Conventions need to be made more fun, and contests would be fun, and would motivate more people to engage in Libertarian activism.

I’ve got a few other ideas that maybe I’ll post later.

There is evidence that his mind could be changed.

Chuck generally likes to run only when he thinks he can win. As far as him being busy, I don’t know whether that can be overcome or not.

Wes, would you like to run for LNC Treasurer? I realize that there might be some interesting conflict of interest issues.

    Yes, that would be…interesting..

    I don’t see a win there, though.

Antman, maybe, but I seriously doubt he would do it (hasn’t agreed to it the last few times) and with the likely delegates at this convention I am wondering how anyone I would want to vote for could win.

Where did I see that Vohra is running for Vice Chair? On Sarwark’s page, complete with a Moulton endorsement. Vohra is said to have written:

Hi all – After much thought, deliberation, and consultation with many Libertarians whose opinions I deeply respect, I have decided to run for Vice Chair of the Libertarian Party.

My goal is to make it very clear to the world what the Libertarian Party does: we cut government to improve people’s lives. We are the only party in America dedicated to reducing, cutting, and downsizing government. It’s time for us to become known as an action-oriented party, not an opinion-oriented party, and I believe that I can help accomplish this.

During my term as an At-Large member, I helped build up the LP’s social media outreach, worked heavily on candidate training (with a lot of guidance from Carla Howell), and currently host the LP’s radio show, which helps candidates let the world know what they will cut, and how that benefits average voters. I also ran an LP social media internship program last summer, and intend to do so again this summer.

As Vice Chair, I hope to take this to a much more advanced level, and help the Libertarian Party become the clear choice for those who want to cut government and advance liberty.

    -Arvin Vohra
    LNC At-Large

In my opinion, if readers find a good Treasurer candidate, Chuck Moulton will be accessible to agreeing to run for Secretary.

I can’t find the post about how the youth of today are very potential Libertarians.

Here Pew Research says the youth of today are more likely to support socialism instead of capitalism.

This is all the more reason why Libertarians need a big increase in the amount of outreach done to young people, as I have been saying for many years.

Mary Starrett, former Constitution Party Communications Director and former member of the Constitution Party of Oregon (???? not sure her current political affiliation), appears to have won a seat in the Yamhill County Commission. She is right now in the lead with 51% of the vote. If she can maintain that lead there will not be a run-off election. If she slips below 50% then there will be a run-off election. She won the 2008 primary however in the run off election she lost to Mary Stern. https://www.newsregister.com/article?articleTitle=starrett-wins-commission-seat-with-51-percent–1400644873–13016

    This is just a draft.

    Mark Hilgenberg
The most Libertarian Generation is right under your nose.

I have spent many years promoting libertarianism and I have found that many libertarian promoters and activists are missing the greatest opportunity of a lifetime, all because we keep looking for people who sound like we do and want our vision of liberty.

There is an old saying, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Well it seems like Libertarians spend a lot of time trying to convert old dogs, being an old dog myself I appreciate the effort but we tend to be set in our ways. While we often seek out the youth, we do so by looking for so called “natural Libertarians”, those who tend to sound as we do and are receptive to our message of limited government and rugged individualism. The most overlooked and most fertile group of people we can reach out to are the independent left leaning Millennial Generation (those under 32).

Independent left youth are socially liberal and economically skeptical of institutions both government and corporate. They see the problems, just don’t have the solutions figured out yet.

Why I call them left is because they don’t use our limited government words and phrases but they are very socially liberal and they don’t automatically seek big government or corporate solutions to the problems they see. In conversation the average libertarian would “hear” them and call them liberals, socialists or statists, just because of the phrasing they use.

This is unfortunate because while they don’t sound libertarian, they are creating libertarian alternatives all around us. A lot of how they live their everyday lives is about practicing what they preach.

They aren’t out there trying to stop urban sprawl, they are just moving from the suburbs back to the cities. For the first time in over 100 years we have seen a reversal of 20 and 30 something’s moving from the city to the suburbs. They are now in massive numbers moving to the cities.

They aren’t pushing for laws on car emissions, they are just not buying cars or if they do, participating in Car share programs.

The cities are becoming hubs for voluntary communal and collective action, just a handful of examples include companies and services such as Airbnb and Tripping (rooms and apartments); Loosecubes and LiquidSpace (office space); RelayRides, Getaround, and Wheelz, Ushare and Enterprise (peer car sharing); Techshop and hackerspaces (industrial workspace); La Cocina(commercial kitchen space); ParkatmyHouse and Park Circa (parking space); Zimride,Sidecar, and Ridejoy (ride sharing); SharedEarth and Hyperlocavore (garden sharing);Grubwithus (restaurant dinners); Vayable (experiences); Skillshare and TaskRabbit (skill sharing); Thredup (childrens clothes); and Yerdle (general).

In just one year, New York’s Citi Bike sharing program has over 100,000 annual members.

Sharing is becoming much easier with Smartphones and the internet, people, especially the Millennials are interconnected like no other generation. Information and ideas travel instantly within local communities and beyond.

Another promising trend is the idea of Mutual Aid and mutual benefit associations. We have seen these spring to action almost instantly to provide real time local aid during disasters such as Hurricane Sandy. Mutually owned companies such as Winco are popular choices vs. government protected corporations like Walmart and more are popping up all the time.

Bitcoin Crypto Currency (the code and system, not necessarily the currency aspect) will have massive changes and it is free of concentrated power, has no trusted elite, is fully transparent and instant. The dominant generation in the use, creation and promotion of cryptos are Millennials.

There are a lot of us ignoring the con game we are forced to play and planting seeds all over.

How do we as Libertarian activists promote our ideas to this generation? The number one thing I tell them is I care about others and not just myself or my own issues of interest. This doesn’t mean I just tell them, I show them with my actions and words. Once they at least see we are looking in the same direction, they listen to solutions and don’t dismiss me as, “just another conservative”, a dialogue of understanding can begin. If we don’t, it will be back and forth left/right rhetoric driving wedges deeper.

People don’t care how much you know (Anyone can quote books) until they know how much you care.

We don’t need to convince them to support individualism, we should be encouraging them to keep working together to create alternative, not berate them because their version of liberty does not conform to how we want to live. The idea of liberty is to live and let live.

Eventually things will sync and it will be liberty vs. authority and authority will be the left and right vs the rest of us. We should be on the cutting edge of this change, not promoting the same old scripted debate.

A libertarian society may look very different than we envision, this should be something we promote, not demonize.

As soon as is practical, how much should we cut federal government taxes and spending?

    1. Just balance the budget. No tax cuts. This would roll back spending to $3 trillion (the level of 2008, end of GW Bush pres.)
    8%

    2. Balance the budget, plus end the corporate income tax. Roll back spending to $2.7 T (2006, GW Bush presidency).

    3. Balance the budget, plus end the personal income tax. Roll back spending to $1.65 T (1998, Clinton presidency).
    15%

    4. Balance the budget, plus end both the personal and corporate income tax. Roll back spending to $1.3 T (1991, Bush Sr.).
    9%

    5. Balance the budget, end the personal, corporate tax, plus end all other payroll taxes. Roll back to $345 B (1979, Carter).
    11%

    6. Cut taxes and spending even more. Government was way too big in 1979 after LBJ, Nixon and Carter pumped it up.
    26%

    7. End all taxes. Any money the federal government needs should be voluntarily funded.

    How about Richard Hoagland?

In 2008, when I was getting hammered by the lies of Steven Gordon for running for the US Congress calling for 1) Legislation to protect whistle-blowers and then 2) Open hearings on waste, fraud, criminal activity and . . . the UFO issue (eliminating all black-budget "contracts" that prohibit military officials or contractors from talking openly about those four issues) . . . back when Steve Gordon put a photo of a guy in a tin-foil hat here on IPR damning the LP for allowing me to run (and calling Redpath to see if I could not be removed/repudiated) . . .

AT THAT SAME EXACT TIME, the 2008 Denver National LP Convention had Richard Hoagland as a speaker — promoting his Face on Mars, mile high glass domes on the Moon, and Dark History of NASA books/materials.

Of course any suggestion that the Universe (Multiverses) just might be teaming with some advanced life that is waiting for us to grow up (read: become libertarian planet-wide) before open contact is insane, but Hoagland was not.

The molesting is in public UNLESS you ask for a supervisor/second TSA Zombie to molest you. Then it is done in private. I have mixed feelings about which method is best (I always insist on being patted down (so far in my experience I have not felt I was molested) in public, but another libertarian friend of mine insists on having it done in private so he can “waste more of their time and resources.”

TSA agent: Do you need a supervisor?

Me: No ma’am. I just prefer to be molested in public so people can see what the TSA really does.

TSA agent: You need a supervisor.

TSA supervisor: We’re not molesting you.

Me: You sure would be sexually assaulting me if y’all weren’t the government.

LP Nevada just endorsed Eddie Lorton for Mayor of Reno. See announcement here.

I believe the race is technically nonpartisan, Which is good, since Mr. Lorton self-identifies as a Republican. See, e.g., here:

What does Eddie Lorton bring to the table? For one thing he is a Republican.

    See also here:

As for politics, Lorton describes himself as a nonpartisan. But he said he ended up “needing party money, kinda” and re-registered as a Republican. He has a sporadic voting history, having voted in four general elections since 1992 and two primaries.
“I am a grassroots Republican,” he said.

    beggar, mooch

Thanks for the reminder. I have been neglecting the begging lately so here you go 🙂

I am looking for help to continue to travel to events such as LNC meetings, LP state conventions, and the like and provide coverage on Independent Political Report (IPR). So far this year I have made trips to the Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas LP conventions and an LNC meeting, and have attended every LNC meeting this past two year term (as well as about half of them since 2007 in the terms when I was not on LNC) to provide coverage. I would like to also be able to go to the Florida LP convention and the national LP convention and cover those, in addition to our own here in Birmingham, Alabama (the only one I don’t need additional travel money for). There were several others I wanted to attend earlier this year but could not afford to go. Contributions can be made via paypal to [email protected] (note two Ls in travelling) or write the same address or call 205-534-1622 to discuss other ways to send me money. IPR is a volunteer activity and has been close to a full time job since 2008, in addition to time and money spent on LNC volunteer work the past two years.

From a donor, posted at IPR:

I just sent in a gift.

Who can send in the next $100?

You don’t have to agree with Paul or even like him, but I do believe it’s fair to say that he provides straightforward coverage of LP events and allows us to stay informed without the haze of biased reports.

This information helps us bond, learn, and grow from each other’s victories and mistakes.

What value do you place on Paul’s work, extensive travel, long bus rides, and countless nights on couches and even hotel floors?

    $100, $500, or more?

I say MUCH more but I can only get away with donating $100 at the moment.

I hope after you read this comment, you’ll chip in via Paypal with whatever amount you can afford — whether $5 or $500.

And if you know Paul, you know he’s a “cheap date” (no offense Paulie) and will stretch every dollar donated.

    Thanks, everyone!

    Thanks!

ALABAMA _ We need help to pay for petitions in Bibb, Blount, Coosa, Chilton, and Shelby Counties. In addition to Jefferson County which we completed for $10,000 last year with help from Libertarian Booster PAC we got $12,500 from LNC with the overall goal of qualifying a federal candidate (US House) for the first time in Alabama since 2002. Now we must just raise the last $2,500 (last 10%) to complete the project. Just think, a $5 contribution will be worth $50, a $50 contribution will mean $500, and a $500 contribution is worth $5,000! We are hoping to complete petitioning for Congressional District 6 and run the first Libertarian for federal office in Alabama since 2002! Please donate what you can: https://secure.piryx.com/donate/c8EdVwp9/Libertarian-Party-of-Alabama/ballotaccess The same petitions allow us to run for up to about 20 state legislative seats and all county commission, county executive and county judicial races in all these counties, plus Jefferson which we already completed. These will be the first LP branded candidates in Alabama since 2002 except for one single LP candidate in one single legislative district in 2006. LP presidential candidates in 2004, 2008 and 2012 were all on as independents without the LP label, with a petition that did not qualify any Libertarians down ticket for the ballot. Of all the 48 states and DC where Johnson was on the ballot in 2012, Alabama and Tennessee were the only states where he was not listed on the ballot as a Libertarian. The last presidential candidate to have a Libertarian ballot label in Alabama was Harry Browne in 2000. With the passage of ballot access reform in Oklahoma, Alabama now has the worst statewide ballot access laws in the nation (Georgia’s are worse at the local level, but statewide retention is reasonable, whereas Alabama has a 20% statewide vote ballot retention requirement, twice as bad as the next worst state). With $22,500 already raised from national liberty organizations and ballot access already achieved in Jefferson County, Alabama Libertarians would like to qualify 5 more counties with $2,500 in individual donations to the state party to get us over the top, and run additional legislative candidates, a Congressional candidate, and county candidates in all six counties.

Paul has been busy working for several weeks. When he does post here, most of the readers seem to appreciate what he posts, particularly when he live blogs from various political meetings/events.

Robert Milnes, James Ogle, now Concerned Libertarian Citizen, where will the Kosher reign of terror end? Frankel is worth less than the toenail of any of the people he has banned. Who is next to suffer the frustrated impotent wrath of queen Frankel and his tiny penis?

Why not bring back everyone Frankel has banned and ban Frankel instead if we have to ban someone? William Saturn is a much better person to post articles incidentally. At least his are original, he does not kiss the taint of the homosexual extremists, plus he supports free speech.
Unlike the copy and paste spams posted by the censorious hypocritical troll queen Frankel!

  56. Vernon May 9, 2014

So Frankel has had another one of his dick(less)tator tantrums and banned Concerned Libertarian Citizen, one of the few people making interesting, funny and/or intelligent comments on this boring politically correct website. This eventually happens to everyone who is not a lockstep politically correct robot and Ziocommie bootlicker here. All the best people to post at IPR get branded as “trolls” by the King Troll and his talmudic council. If you haven’t been called a troll here yet you have either had nothing interesting to say or your turn is coming.

This one has been beaten to death. Yes, it is undeniable that “climate change” is happening. It has been happening since the dawn of time. But, the degree to which humans are responsible for the current climate change is definitely in dispute, as is the claim that said climate change is a bad thing. Those are possibilities. Possibilities for which some evidence exists. But, they are not beyond dispute.

Unfortunately, because the issue has been so incredibly politicized, for so long, it has become impossible to determine the legitimacy of damn near all of the scientific research around the matter. GP may be absolutely right. But, at this point, I can’t see how anyone could draw a solid conclusion about it.

    Very well said.

Phillies’ blind faith in the “scientific consensus” far surpasses that of even the most diehard religious fanatics that I have ever encountered. He makes Grundmann look open-minded!

Most people can’t hack it as a petition signature gatherer, at least not for anything beyond a very short period of time. Anyone who has ever been involved with petition drives will tell you that it is not easy.

“Why was this guy getting paid $1,200 for two years to do something that took very little time, and for which he put in little effort?”

Should read $1,200 per month for two years.

This came out to $14,400 per year, and $28,800 for two years, and once again, this is something that took very little effort, and the candidates had to contact him to be added to the site. The majority of LP candidates who were running at the time never even got listed. This is something that took very little effort, and really could have been done by volunteers. Talk about easy money. It must be nice to have friends on the LNC who will find an easy job for you to do just so you can be on the payroll.

Old comment I made that sums a lot of this stuff up:

“Sean Haugh has had the luxury of working for the Libertarian Party out of his house for the past 10 years. First as Executive Director of the North Carolina LP, then as Candidate Tracker, and then as Political Director (and he is the first Political Director to ever have been given the luxury of doing this). Every job he’s done in the party he’s been ineffective at, yet he’s been on the payroll leeching off of the donors for years.”

Funny how he was able to work out of his home in North Carolina as LP National’s Political Director, when other Political Directors had to work out of the national office in DC. He was such a horrible Political Director that the LP would have been better off leaving the position vacant when he was in it.

“Jed Ziggler May 6, 2014 at 11:30 pm
What’s wrong with Sean Haugh? I’m not familiar with him.”

Oh, one more thing. Would take credit for other people’s work, such as when Paul took spent a lot of time compiling a list of all of the Libertarian Party members from around the country who were running for office, Haugh took the list and presented it to the LNC as if he had compiled it, and did not give Paul any credit for having compiled the list.

  71. Andy May 7, 2014

Here’s an old article about Sean Haugh and the LNC Candidate Tracker scam. Why was this guy getting paid $1,200 for two years to do something that took very little time, and for which he put in little effort? What did this really do for the party other than line Sean Haugh’s pocket for a couple of years with some easy money?

Candidate Tracker Budget: Real or Payola?
Posted by Greg Dirasian under News and Events

If you take the time to read the Libertarian National Committee’s FEC report, you will note that they pay Cory Stern $600/month to maintain the web site. Given the size and complexity of the web site (and comparing it to the outlandish fees Shane Cory charged when he was doing the job), $600/month sounds like a bargain.

For a subset of the web site, the portion known as Candidate Tracker, you may note that the LNC pays Sean Haugh $1,200 per month. I’m not quite sure how much candidate tracking Haugh actually does. The About Candidate Tracker page says:

Also remember, we can’t include data from your race if you don’t tell us about it! Please contact LPHQ at 1-800-ELECT-US or send an e-mail through the LP Support Center.

And there are only six (6) candidates listed in Candidate Tracker Really? It costs us $200/month to track what each candidate is doing? And they only get tracked if they send an email or make a phone call.

Come on. I was born on a Saturday, but it wasn’t last Saturday. What is Sean Haugh really getting paid to do? Once again, I am forced to ask, is it just stupidity running the Libertarian Party or is there something unethical going on?

A few hours after I posted this, another candidate was added to candidate tracker (see http://lpinscr.blogspot.com/2007/07/susan-bell-on-candidate-tracker.html). Coincidence or a scramble to justify the existence of a program that is wasting money?

Google his name. Fired as LP Political Director. Fired from Free & Equal. Caused multiple petition drives to fail, with the LP and with Free & Equal. Insane mood swings. Tried to get a couple of members of state LP affiliate to burn a stack of 2,000 high validity petition signatures (which is a criminal offense). Kissed the asses of certain people in the LP so he’d get jobs with the party, then was a screw off in those jobs. Got paid $1,200 a month to run a candidate tracker on the LP national website for a year or two, and there were never more than a dozen candidates on the site, usually less than that, and he was so lazy that the candidates had to contact him and give him the information to be put on the site. Candidate Tracker was basically a part time job where he was making around $100-$200 per hour for doing little work. Falsely accused people of sexual harassment but never produced any real evidence to back up the claims. Was the Executive Director of the LP of North Carolina for several years and he ran the party into the ground to the point where they could not raise enough money to pay him so they had to eliminate the position for several years. Basically a screw up and a jerk.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    May 6, 2014

(Indianapolis, Indiana ) With incumbents sweeping federal races in today’s primary elections, the Libertarian Party renewed its calls for the Democratic and Republican parties to move their selection of general election candidates to privately-financed conventions. Since its inception, the Libertarian Party has nominated candidates at its own self-financed convention.

“It’s a charade,” noted Libertarian Party State Chairman Dan Drexler. “From the low voter turnout to the overwhelming success of incumbents, it’s evident that the primaries are nothing more than taxpayer subsidized media and public relations for the old parties. We could save millions of dollars in our state if our legislators would simply move in-party business to the confines of their own conventions.”

“St. Joseph County, one of our most-populated counties, reported just 7% voter turnout,” Drexler continued. “I understand wanting to have a voice. Moving candidate selection to a private convention will actually drive more activity at the local level, resulting in more robust elections for precinct positions and convention delegates. It saves money for the state and drives greater participation.”

The practice is not without proven success. Both Democratic and Republican parties select statewide candidates at convention, including secretary of state, treasurer and auditor.

The Libertarian Party of Indiana nominated a partial slate of federal candidates at its April 26th convention in Indianapolis. Candidates include:

Donna Dunn, U.S. House District 1
Jeff Petermann, U.S. House District 2
John Krom, U.S. House District 5
Andrew Horning, U.S. House District 8

    ABOUT THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY
The Libertarian Party is America, and Indiana’s, third largest political party founded in 1971 as an alternative to the two main political parties. Its vision is for a world in which all individuals can freely exercise the natural right of sole dominion over their own lives, liberty and property by building a political party that elects Libertarians to public office, and moving public policy in a libertarian direction.

The Libertarian Party of Indiana was formed in 1974, and has maintained ballot access since 1994. Dan Drexler, an Indianapolis resident, currently serves as Chairman.

Just an FYI that David Catania is an independent candidate for Mayor in DC. He was a GOP member of the City Council (at-large) when elected several years ago but left the party as it moved to the right. While he’s the underdog, he has a reasonable chance to be elected in the upcoming mayoral election. DC always has independents running and winning, since there are seats reserved on the City Council for candidates that are not of the majority party (which is always the Democratic party.) http://www.davidcatania,com

Young Americans for Liberty Sues University of Georgia Over Limits on First Amendment Activity, Including Petitioning, on Campus
    Published on May 2, 2014,

On May 1, Young Americans for Liberty sued various officials of the University of Georgia at Athens, over the campus restrictions on First Amendment activity on campus. University rules say free speech activity, including petitioning, must be confined to two tiny areas on campus that include only one-tenth of 1% of the square area of the campus.

Other areas of the campus may be used, but only if students request a permit at least 48 hours in advance. Even in the two small “free expression areas”, permission must be obtained. The case is Young Americans for Liberty at the University of Georgia v Morehead, U.S. District Court, middle district, 3:14cv-39. The University is public, not private. Here is the Complaint. Page 12 says the group would like to circulate petitions, among other activities.

District of Columbia Voter Registration Cards Misspell “Libertarian” as “Liberterian”
    Published on May 3, 2014,

The District of Columbia voter registration forms list the qualified parties and provide a checkbox next to the name of each one, to make it possible for voters to choose a party. See this picture of the form, which spells “Libertarian” as “Liberterian.” Thanks to Bruce Majors for the link.

Compare and contrast to our site at lpnevada.org. It’s amazing how far over $1 million in dues each year goes at the national level, compared to the far more modest sums we’re accustomed to in Nevada.

    From Mike Kane:

    Colleagues,

Over the past year, the Libertarian Party in Region 14 has grown tremendously in terms of both members and activism.

Miami Dade has grown from a small but dedicated social group into a strong group of hard working activists. One candidate, Marcos Miralles did a phenomenal job with his grassroots campaign. He received 23% of the vote for Hialeah City Council, against a heavily entrenched long term incumbent. Marcos put up such a strong campaign that the incumbent had to spend $736,000 for re-election.

In a Community Council race on Fisher Island, a Libertarian has a strong chance of being elected. There are 6 seats open for re-election, and aside from him, no one has yet declared. In Miami, these groups oversee zoning laws and other local issues. The election is in June.

Miami-Dade has also begun holding social events aside from their business meetings. Just this week, a “Toke the Vote” event had over 60+ attendees. Attendance in the social events have grown, as has both LPF membership and registered Libertarians. Late last year, during an anti-common core event, I saw at least 80 individuals show up for a social speaker event. This is more than delegates who showed up at last years state convention!!

In the near future, the Miami-Dade County is poised for exponential growth.. Principled Radical Libertarianism, coupled with outreach, good candidates, and most importantly the hard work by their activists can all be attributed to their growth to date and moving forward.. There’s no doubt that Miami-Dade will soon be strongest and most active affiliate in all of Florida.

Monroe County has made progress as well.. Here in Key West and other areas, especially Islamorada and Tavernier have seen a substantial growth in Florida Party membership.

Countless social events have been held, with as many as 13 people showing up at one event. Unfortunately, many individuals attend only sporadically. Rather than being a lack of interest problem, low attendance can be attributed to most people having variable work schedules which makes regularly scheduled meetings rather difficult.

The great news is that there are Libertarians who are interested in becoming more involved. While no one has yet committed to run for either County or City council, I’m caustically optimistic that we can identify one before deadline.

Just this past week, Adrian Wyllie traveled to Key West. He secured two interviews with radio stations, in addition to featured on the front page of the Key West Citizen (the only daily paper in the lower Keys). He attended a meet and greet at a BBQ restaurant and a social gathering afterwards at the Garden Hotel.

All of the Libertarians who I spoke with were incredibly excited about the media mentions yet were disappointed with the turnout for his events. A local activist William Dail who helped facilitate these events and I agreed that with more notice and with the right promotion , attendance will definitely be higher which will in turn help to start the affiliate that I’ve been trying to start for so long.

As I’m sure you are aware, I do not attend to seek re-election on the the Executive Committee this year. I’m confident that Suzanne Gilmore, provided that she does seek election, will provide a radical voice of reason on the committee, one that the committee so desperately needs. In the event that there are no candidates from this region who are seeking election, I would be hard pressed to serve on the state committee this year.

While there have certainly been disagreements amongst each other hereon the EC, I believe we are all happy with the progress of the LPF as a whole over the past year. Here’s hoping to an even incredibly stronger party this year, and the years to come.

While 100’s of individuals have played a role in the Region’s rapid growth, I would personally like to commend the following individuals for their efforts, in no particular order. Suzanne Gilmore, Tony Sellers, Abigail and Sacha DuBearn, Pierre Creveaux, Eric Faden, Marc Golub, Lauren Sonnenberg, Dianne Thorne. Here in they Keys, Nina Rodrguez, Vic Olson, and William Dail have contributed as well.

Karl Dickey, Vicki Kirkland and Donald Sheldon have also helped immensely, despite them them living out of the region.

I’d also like to thank each and every individual who gave me the constant encouragement to stand up for what was right despite the adversity it brought. You know who you are. 😉 😉 🙂

I look forward to seeing everyone at the state convention in just a few weeks and hopefully then again in Columbus in June. Onward!

    With warmest regards,

    Mike Kane

The North Carolina Reform Party in Greensboro, N.C. is holding an organizational meeting on May 5th at 6 PM at Golden Corral on Lawndale Ave. You must purchase a meal at G.C. to enter the meeting room. We will meet there on the first Monday of each month for the next three months. In July, the registered members of the Reform Party will vote to stay at G.C. or another meeting place. For more information contact Joe at [email protected] or call 336-455-1394. I will be inviting 50 people from the Greensboro area to attend, but all unaffiliated voters are welcome to attend.

And ya know, while they probably weren’t speaking on the subject, I’m quite certain that an evolution denier or two have spoken at LP conventions. I don’t know the stats (I looked, but this too is in dispute) around what percentage of the population fall into this category. But, life experience leads me to believe that its around 10% of the US population. If I’m right, even if Ls are disproportionately more likely to believe in evolution, it is highly likely that one or two deniers have made their way to the podium.

Re: National Convention. Some readers will remember the 2010 National Convention, at which scheduled speakers included an associate of the Party of the South and other reactionary sorts, who had to be replaced at the last minute. This time we have a global warming denier, Harold Ambler, who according to LP News “provides great ammunition for any of us trying to debunk the claim that ‘all the science is in’ on climate change.”

Why don’t we give speaking slots to evolution deniers and young earthers, while we are at it? Why not an astrologer?

In a party whose founders professed an admiration for science, technology, and human reason, this choice of speaker completely disgraces to our party.

    Dedicated supporter,

Immortal Technique, legendary independent hip-hop artist, will appear live on Breaking the Set with Abby Martin on RT America today (Thursday, May 1st) at 3PM PT/6PM ET to discuss Free & Equal’s United We Stand Festival at UCLA on May 10th.

Watch live online at RT.com or check your local cable listings.

Immortal Technique is a headlining performer and Abby Martin is a speaker at the United We Stand Fest.

Felipe Andres Coronel, better known by the stage name Immortal Technique, is a Peruvian-American rapper and urban activist, born in Lima, Peru and raised in Harlem, New York. Most of his lyrics focus on controversial issues in global politics, class struggle, poverty, religion, government, imperialism and institutional racism. The revolutionary music of Immortal Technique speaks to this movement and helps to influence young people to run for office.

The festival—which is co-sponsored by a number of socially responsible businesses including Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Nature’s Path Organic, and Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, and numerous grassroots activist organizations such as People Against the NDAA (PANDA), Rock the Vote, March Against Monsanto, Thrive, Occupy.com, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, We Are Change, and many more—brings together various perspectives and represents the political diversity and basic values of the nation, which are not currently represented in Washington.

The purpose of the festival is to spread awareness of the many social and political injustices being permitted or committed by those in power. We are organizing and forming coalitions to take back control of government through democratic processes. The United We Stand festival celebrates the re-emergence of democracy at the state level where the people are fighting back against the corporatocracy, passing GMO labeling laws, legalizing hemp farming, and nullifying NDAA provisions.

Free & Equal is enabling multiple organizations and groups to find the strength in numbers to make the difference. In support of free and equal elections, the movement is providing the means by which honest candidates can get their messages to the public. In November 2014, the people will have more opportunities to vote for their first choice Representatives.

Musical headliners at UCLA include Public Enemy (Chuck D, Professor Griff, Jahi, and DJ Lord), founding members of Wu-Tang Clan, Immortal Technique, Brother Ali, The Siren, Paul Masvidal of Cynic, Tatiana Moroz, Rooftop Revolutionaries, A-Alikes, Luminaries, Kellee Maize, Jon Goodhue, Sounds of Solidarity, and more.

Speakers include Larry King (media legend), Ben Cohen & Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream; via video), Dennis Kucinich (former Ohio Representative), Marianne Williamson (New York Times bestselling author & independent congressional candidate, CA-33), David Bronner (CEO of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps), and Sean Stone (son of Oliver Stone, host of Buzzsaw).

Other notable figures include Dr. Jill Stein, Gov. Gary Johnson, Amber Lyon (Emmy-winning journalist/whistleblower), Ben Swann (Emmy-winning journalist), Diane Goldstein (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition), Mnar Muhawesh (Mint Press News), Abby Martin (Breaking the Set on RT), Pamela Donnelly (Amazon bestselling education author), comedian Lee Camp, Rosa Clemente (2008 Green Party vice presidential candidate), Josh Tolley (syndicated talk show host), Brad Friedman (KPFK 90.7FM Los Angeles), and many more.

    to me

    Libertarian Party

The deadline date for “Early Bird” registration has been extended by two weeks, from May 1 to Thursday, May 15.

Libertarian Party National Convention – Columbus, Ohio – June 26-29, 2014Partly because of a confluence of deadlines and other critical (but positive*) things happening at LPHQ, the Convention Management Committee has decided to extend the deadline for discounted convention pricing.

Although the CMC is a committee of volunteers, we are working with personnel at LPHQ, especially for processing registrations and for managing the convention website. Regretfully, there just has not been the time between us to get this info up on the site, including recently confirmed additional speakers.

Also, many states have just recently held their conventions, where delegates to the national convention are selected; and there are still a few more to take place. This gives them a little more time.

I know that many of you potential attendees have been waiting for more specifics in the schedule before purchasing a package. You will find more details in the coming days, especially who the meal speakers will be, as well as speech titles and descriptions. I really believe that this will be one of the best conventions in recent years. You won’t want to miss it!

We’ve all been “up to our eyeballs,” and you are the beneficiaries! It may take a few more days to post the most current updates, but please check out the 2014 convention site within the next two weeks for new info.

Please also note that the cutoff date for reserving a hotel room at the Hyatt Regency Columbus is June 5, but don’t wait until then! After June 5, we must relinquish any rooms left in our block back to the hotel to be made available to the general public. The $119 rate will still be honored, but only if there are rooms available. If you have any questions or problems, please email me at [email protected].

    In Liberty,

    Nancy Neale
    Chair, 2014 Convention Management Committee

    * One of these “positive” things is the closing of the purchase of an office space for the new LP headquarters, and the move from our current location must be completed by the end of May. This is exciting news, and will save the party a lot of money, but also cuts into the time of our hard-working staff.
Please donate today to the Libertarian Party today. Shrink government — expand liberty.

The Chicago Socialist Campaign is going to try and replicate Kshama Sawant’s unexpected electoral victory last year by running long time community activist Jorge Mujica for Alderman in Chicago ‘s 25th Ward. He was selected as the coalition’s candidate last night, I think? We’ll see, the Democrats in Seattle are already prepping to defeat Sawant in next years Councilmanic races (Seattle is switching from citywide/at-large councilmembers to districts and all current councilmembers have to run again next year). I think the Democrats are going to try and cut any independent socialist electoral projects off at the knees to avoid any distractions come 2016 and Hillary Clinton’s campaign for President.
