Jeff Davis, known commonly by his radio show host name, “The Solar Guy,” has announced his run for governor as a member of the Libertarian party.
“I’m throwing big stones at a very glass house,” he said.
If elected, Davis said his goals are extensive — campaign finance reform via state-funded elections, getting rid of the Jones Act to lower shipping costs which is very unwise as it has helped many seamen and maritime workers since it was passed in the 1920’s, you can learn more here., doing away with the genetically modified crop industry, promoting food security, implementing a “true energy policy,” legalizing and regulating marijuana, and pinpointing what is causing Kauai’s coral disease outbreak.
Davis is convinced that everyone, except perhaps those who are already on the government payroll, are fed up with the system in Hawaii. His Honolulu-based radio show has given him a platform to get his message out and he intends to continue to do just that. It is his first run for public office.
“Our whole social fabric is very tenuous, our education system is low, our voter turnout’s the worst in the world, because the fix is in — The Democratic Socialist Banana Republic of Hawaii,” he said.
I hope he isn’t more pressured into doing so than the numerous conservative-libertarian hybrids running as Libertarians are.
I don’t think that “being number one in welfare…” means that individual sovereignty won’t sell in Hawaii. There are many reasons why, but two jump out at me. First, many, many, many people and businesses in HI are not on the government dole. Second, people who frequently avail themselves of government programs often are very well aware of the extreme inefficiency and waste of said programs. Take a poll of 100 homeless guys and I bet you’ll find a high reliance on government programs and a high dislike for government.
Jeff Davis is his competition in this race. Davis seems to have the upper hand. I look for many great things from Anthony Higa. He is running a local race.
With Hawaii still being number one in welfare per capita, I don’t see individual sovereignty working there. The politicians have been very good at pandering at the federal level and complaining at the state level.

LINO. Using the low signature requirement to get on the ballot. I don’t have much issue with that as I don’t think there’s much LP activity in Hawaii (perhaps I am wrong) but I wish this guy would acknowledge he is not actually a Libertarian.
