May Day, celebrated on May 1st every year, is often called the most widely recognized holiday on Earth. It’s celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, on every continent and among every race and religion. It is International Workers Day. While the US has never been a big supporter of the holiday, American socialists are already planning festivities and a worldwide online rally.
Leading the effort here in the US to organize May Day commemorations is the Socialist Equality Party. They’ve been distributing numerous announcements and promotional materials touting ‘International May Day 2014’. Organizers say that while the traditional street marches will occur on May 1, the online May Day effort will take place on May 4 and will include, “organizing a global online rally against inequality, dictatorship and war.”
“The response has been extraordinary,” said US Socialist Equality Party National Secretary Joseph Kishore, “It is an expression of the absolutely unique character of this event: a worldwide meeting of workers and young people to oppose war, social inequality and dictatorship.” He went on to explain, “We are campaigning very aggressively to make this event as widely known as possible. Anyone who is looking for a program and perspective to fight back against the disastrous policies of the corporate and financial elite should make plans to attend today.”
Organized by the ICFI and the World Socialist Web Site, the international online May Day Rally will include speakers such as David North, Chairman of the WSWS Editorial Board. North explained the purpose of the online rally saying, “The confrontation with Russia over Ukraine marks a new and dangerous turn in the orientation of the imperialist powers. The Gods of Imperialist War are athirst. As in the years that preceded World War I and World War II, a new division of the world is being prepared.” The Socialist Equality Party instructs members and supporters to register for the online May Day event at InternationalMayDay.org. Registration is free.
