We apologize for the large amount of downtime over the past week. IPR is currently on a VPS (Virtual Private Server) account at Host Gator. We are switching over to Amazon Cloud Hosting this week. Thank you for your patience.

Didn’t Amazon Cloud go down today? Sorry, couldn’t help myself but it is true. Certainly a good move anyway.

Yup. Amazon does not have a great track record over the past few months.

Let us not start bitching about the new host before the site is even there.
I’ve done much business with Amazon (as a consumer, of course, but possibly more so as a merchant), and have always known them to speedily address problems. Frankly, I can think of few mega-corporations that I would rather do business with. Given this, I applaud the move.

Hopefully it will work out for the best.

It should be a positive move.

Why not check out modwest.com

I won’t try to talk anyone out of Amazon cloud hosting, but if y’all are seeking alternatives I’ve heard good things about Liquid Web.

Just to be clear I agree it is a good move. I had literally just finished reading an article about the Cloud crash when I read this though so I couldn’t help myself. If nothing else the recovery time alone is significantly better with Amazon

Whether it is in the “cloud” or in your office, a server that is not configured properly will fail. The “cloud” is not some super-spectacular cure-all to fix mismanaged servers.
You still need to have a virtual machine running on this “cloud” service that has all the software you need, and that is able to import the database of the existing site.
Based on a best-guess of what your database currently consists of, I estimate 6-8 hours of down time — if it is handled properly and everything works.
And then someone still needs to “tune” the server.

SF @9 is correct (again)
Depending on the underlying software that IPR runs there may be some excellent Platform as a Servrice (PaaS as opposed to IaaS) that could provide a higher quality service offering, and have developed the intellectual property to deploy service packages that would meet the requirements of IPR and maintain them without requiring that the IPR staff do that “in-house”…
You will have to do alot of the server administration effort with a pure IaaS service, like an Amazon.

Looks like my estimate was actually a bit low. When you consider the subsequent DNS outage and the splash page on GoDaddy…
Not a good day for news!
But at least it seems to be online again.
