As reported on Ballot Access News, the Reform Party of Kansas has nominated pastor Chuck Baldwin for president. The party, which is ballot qualified in Kansas, is no longer affiliated with the national Reform Party of the United States.
Baldwin was the party’s 2008 nominee for president and the nominee of the national Constitution Party. As Richard Winger points out:
It is not known if Baldwin wishes to run for President in 2012, or even if he has been informed of his nomination.
A search for the current Constitution Party presidential nominee Virgil Goode on Baldwin’s website, returns no results. It is not known whether Baldwin has endorsed or commented on Goode’s candidacy.

Correct Red. I have never heard Chuck Baldwin say anything about Islam taking over America. The Islamophobes tend to be the fundamentalist in the Republican party. Europe also has them in their far-right circles. By and large though the United States is a safe haven from anti-muslim sentiment and it should be.
Justin, how is Baldwin Islamaphobic, whatever that even means? He is a conservative Christian and as such I’m sure believes Islam is a false religion, but that doesn’t make him Islama”phobic.” I don’t remember reading any fear mongering about Islam from Baldwin.
At least Baldwin is anti-war, even if he is rabidly Islamophobic…..
37, There was a statement made at the CP convention that recognized Jim Clymer for doing that very thing. I dont have a written source but it does appear that Clymer is the main financial backer.
On ballot access. He is being quite stingy even though he does have some money of his own and/or his PAC; yet he wants to re-invent the flat tire and take no advice from his own national committee that are telling him what it takes to complete various states.
Perhaps he is getting too rosy of a scenario because he is going out and petitioning in his own home district where he was a Congressman for many years and people know his name, and has a network of friends and volunteers helping him. He doesn’t have to pay for motels and restaurants etc or learn his way around.
That sort of thing can paint far too rosy a picture of what he is up against nationwide.
“Virgil Goode sure doesn’t want to spend a lot, that’s for sure.”
You mean of his own money? Or “a lot” on ballot access?
He can only spend what he takes in.
Virgil Goode sure doesn’t want to spend a lot, that’s for sure. His ballot access is likely to be a lot worse than past CP candidates or than LP and GP this year as a direct result.
All this right wing minor party is infighting is indeed fascinating. Too me it seems pretty clear the factions that formed the CP are pulling apart. I really wonder if they will last past this election. Didn’t Jim Clymer basically keep them afloat financially?
@23, 26 etc. Thanks for the info. Fascinating.
Baldwin is definitely not a Reconstructionist. He is an Independent Fundamental Baptist. He is even a Dispensationalist, he just doesn’t let it cloud his judgement re. Israel. Peroutka has many supporters who are Reconstructionists, but he himself plays it pretty close to the vest. For what it’s worth, the church he attends is not Reconstructionist.
That is true not all “Christianist” are Reconstructionist. Would you describe Peroutka and Baldwin as simply “Christianist” or full fledged Reconstructionist? Goode, while religious, does not seem to be focused on religion in the same way.
By “Christianist” I meant something like explicitly Christian – a deliberate attempt to express Christianity in the political realm. All Reconstructionist are Christianists, but not all Christianists are Reconstructionist, although in my experience most are at least some form of Reformed. Theologically, Reformed thinking is a better fit. There are elements of Dispensational thinking that are a poor fit with Christianism, IMO. That is partially why I was so surprised when I saw the statement supporting Israel.
Red, a popular term used to describe the movement is Christian Reconstructionist. That describes the CLP but I dont personally know Peroutka.
There is an interesting split going on in the minor right. There are the non-interventionists of the Constitution Party and CLP which seem to be losing out, to some extent to the Christian Party and Americas Party. There is also the seeming position shift by the AIP away from the non-interventionists. While the Christian Party and AP are not strong enough to overtake the Constitution Party they are strong enough to weaken it critically.
“EXPLAIN….”
OK. After posting an article about the Christian Party here at IPR, I did a little research on them. I came across an official resolution on one of their sites expressing very strong support for Israel. The statement was obviously informed by Dispensational theology. Most “Christianists” (for lack of a better term) that I have run across in third party circles are Reformed (Calvinists) types, including Peroutka, and don’t ascribe to Dispensationalism.
Keep in mind that small parties often reflect the quirks of a few individuals, so I don’t know that the Christian Party is explicitly Dispensational, but the statement was not something Peroutka would support.
I would say of the two the CLP has a larger web presence. The CLP has three regularly updated websites. Either of those parties is going to struggle because there are quite a few conservatives in this country that are not regular church goers and many arent Christians. The American Heritage Party was a more accurate name.
The CLP supports the Chalcedon Foundation. Has anyone ever heard if the CF or the Rushdooney family support them?
No Peroutka is not officially affiliated with the Christian Party. I was wrong about Titus he is involved in the education department of the CLP.
EXPLAIN….
The Christian Liberty Party is what used to be the American Heritage Party and it was affiliated with Titus to the degree that it was largely Titus supporters (from the Titus vs. Howard Phillips battle for the CP nomination in 2000) that formed it.
We reported on the separate Christian Party here at IPR.
https://independentpoliticalreport.com/?s=%22christian+party%22
Peroutka spoke to them, but I don’t think it is accurate to call the Christian Party a Peroutka party, for reasons I will explain if anyone is interested.
Essentially the Christian Party is a very small but loud minority of former Constitutionalist that left because a couple of state chairmen were not 100% anti-abortion. There are two groups Peroutka and the Christian Party which I think also includes Herb Titus. Then out west you have the Christian Liberty party which is somewhat connected with the Chalcedon Foundation. They go beyond the abortion issue and seek to have biblical law become U.S. law.
I think we can agree that the Goode campaign has not been as visible as it could have been. We may be seeing the last days of the CP.
Don’t discount the fact that he’s polling at 9% in Virginia.
I don’t know if I would say the Goode campaign has been a disaster, but I do think it so far illustrates that there is no magic for third parties in nominating former elected officials.
“I’m not up to speed on the origins of the Christian Party. Are they a “split” from the Constitution Party? I take it Mr. Baldwin is not directly involved with them? Thanks for any info.”
Yes. Dead on.
It’s some Peroutka-types and some southerners who were dissatisfied with national leadership. However, it essentially just consists of like 4-5 states with a handful of people in each.
Maybe the Reform Party of Kansas had left-over Baldwin for President signs from 2008 and they wanted to use them.
Fiscally conservative (for the right) and even ecological recycling (for the Greens)
Some screwballs from California must have moved to Kansas. What’s the deal with 3rd party activists? All these years – ’68 was promising; the Perot movement had potential – and still kooks lead the charge.
I believe its the Peroutka die-hards from the CP?
I’m not up to speed on the origins of the Christian Party. Are they a “split” from the Constitution Party? I take it Mr. Baldwin is not directly involved with them? Thanks for any info.
Does baldnuts have to agree to be placed on the ballot in that state? I think it varies between states?
I do live in Kansas and I am strongly in the Johnson camp. The RPKS has been a mouthpiece for Christian fundamentalists since 2006 and has had declining registration since 2002. The party more than likely will not keep ballot status. Baldwin received .33% of the vote in ’08.
Yeah Goode’s campaign has been a disaster. If I lived in KS I’d go for Baldwin over Johnson. I wonder what Pastor Baldwin’s response we’ll be. I emailed and asked him what he thought of his party nominating a neo-con.
Goode’s campaign has been a joke. This is the social media age and he’s getting his ass kicked. Pretty sad that I have more twitter followers.
I offered my help and got no response, so while I was on the fence between Goode & Johnson, I’m now pledging my support for Johnson and actually donated to his campaign a couple days ago.
Why not Ron Paul if the point was to make a statement AND keep ballot status?
Could you imagine the amount of attention they’d receive if they nominated Graham?
If they wanted to protest the Goode nomination while receiving a large volume of votes, why not choose someone with better name recognition like Pat Robertson, James Dobson, or Billy Graham?
Definitely a slap in the face. I believe it’s the work of the “Christian Party of America” folks.
Either way, this group won’t keep their ballot access.
“a major slap in the face to the CP.”
I suspect that was probably their intention.
Jack Fellure? I know the CA AIP is wacky, but they can’t be that stupid.
@#6… who was on the list the Reform Party of Kansas was considering for their presidential nomination?
Waste of a nomination and a major slap in the face to the CP. To be honest I like Chuck Baldwin but I really dont think he is interested in running for national office.
Welp, that’ll be the last time anyone serious tries to run for the RPK nomination. An enviable list of serious (for a one-state third party, anyway) candidates ran for this nomination, and the RPK nominated…a guy who isn’t running and has become a Republican.
Congrats, guys, you just pissed away your party.
@3 I tried to ask party chair and VP nominee Toby Davis about that, but was unable to reach him.
This was unexpected.
Over at BAN there is a suggestion that the AIP could nominate Jack Fellure. Is there any possibility of that happening?
yes, but still sad, sad, sad. Hope California American Independent Party does not follow suit.
It would appear the Goode/Clymer campaign had better collect 5,000 valid signatures in the next 10 days or kiss another state good-bye. Did anyone see this coming?
