Looking forward (I think) to being on the @TheDailyShow w/ Jon Stewart Tues, 6/5! Tune in, @ComedyCentral, 11:00 pm ET. http://www.thedailyshow.com/

Johnson already appeared on the Colbert Show prior to receiving the Libertarian Presidential nomination.

Also on the twitter feed (excerpting out things covered in separate previous IPR stories):

May jobless numbers are no surprise, given Washington’s refusal to cut spending and get out of the way of growth. http://www.garyjohnson2012.com/for-immediate-release-2 #tlot

Step in right direction, but not there yet. #SSM is a right! “Fed court strikes down key part of #DOMA” http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/31/us/massachusetts-same-sex-marriage/index.html #gaymarriage

The front page of http://www.garyjohnson2012.com/ shows the current “money bomb” at
$44,143.58 raised from 347 donors. The goal is $58,070 by June 4, one dollar for every foot of climbing Mt. Everest and back down, which Gary Johnson did 9 years ago this week.

    @20
Jon Stewart covers any issue or movement that is worthy of covering. He isn’t willing to engage in gotcha journalism. He is willing to ask questions and allow the answer to be the answer without attempting to win points against his guest. All this means he is fair interviewer whose goal is to bring insight to his audience instead of bringing a specific ideological end result. All these traits of Jon Stewart mean that it makes no difference whether he (or his writing staff) has sympathy towards small government ideas so long as he allows advocates of small government to present their case.

  2. Austin Battenberg June 4, 2012

Because back in the day libertarianism wasn’t a very common ideological term and the left didn’t necessarily believe libertarians were conservatives who liked to smoke pot and get laid.

“He seems like the kind of person that probably votes for Democrats because of social issues but also wishes the government was smaller.”
I think Stewart is a Democrat sympathizer and is not sympathetic to the idea of smaller government.

I don’t know for sure, but he seems to like Ron Paul.

This is only a guess, but I would guess left-center-libertarian with an emphasis on the issues where he is most in line with the left. I know a lot of people like that and was once one myself (sans the center part).

Maher used to be in this category back in the 90s or so but has moved to the big government left.

“I think Jon Stewart is more of a (small l) libertarian.”
To the extent that Stewart is critical of government gone amok he is an ally.

“He seems like the kind of person that probably votes for Democrats because of social issues but also wishes the government was smaller.”
I think Stewart is a Democrat sympathizer and is not sympathetic to the idea of smaller government.

“I don’t think he will be as hostile to GJ as some of you think.”
Stewart is generally critical and challenging of all guests. I wouldn’t watch his show if it were otherwise.

  5. paulie June 4, 2012

Maher would make it a trifecta!

  6. Austin Battenberg June 3, 2012

And Jon Stewart has been very kind to Ron Paul and Judge Andrew Napolitano.

I think his hardest interview to a “libertarian” was Rand Paul, but considering he is more conservative then libertarian, we shall see how this interview plays out. Frankly, I’m excited.

  7. Common Tater June 2, 2012

It will be the start of something big! 🙂

  8. Alan Pyeatt June 2, 2012

This should be a VERY good audience for Gary Johnson. He has the cred on marijuana legalization, and a better ACLU rating than Obama.

It would be different if he were running against Barney Frank or Dennis Kucinich. Johnson will have this crowd in the palm of his hand.

Jon Stewart will probably be skeptical about voting third party, but that’s a GOOD thing because it gives Gary a chance to answer the questions. In sales you always want to uncover the objections, because then you have an opportunity to resolve them.

  9. Paulie June 2, 2012

I don’t know that he will be hostile necessarily, but tripping guests up to make the show more entertaining is a trademark of his. He is an entertainer first and foremost. It’s all in good fun and even getting skewered on the Daily Show is great for a relatively obscure, at this point, campaign.

  10. Nick Kruse June 2, 2012

I think Jon Stewart is more of a (small l) libertarian. He seems like the kind of person that probably votes for Democrats because of social issues but also wishes the government was smaller. I don’t think he will be as hostile to GJ as some of you think.

  11. paulie June 2, 2012

Maybe that’s why Johnson said looking forward (I think)…

Easy to get trapped, but just getting that audience is a win in itself.

  12. Eric Blitz June 2, 2012

Looking forward to Gary’s appearance on the Daily Show. The Daily Show segments are longer than those on the Colbert Report. Also, John tends to ask tougher questions, especially of guests who may challenge the show’s political demographics (left leaning and independents/undecideds). While that presents risks, it also has more impact if he does well. This is the kind of show that brings not only exposure, but has the capacity to open people up to the message.

  13. paulie June 2, 2012

@6 I don’t log into facebook anymore, but if I did I would. People have sure been inviting me!

I did discover that I can respond to messages in facebook groups that I’m in via email, and if I respond I see followup responses to those messages; if I don’t respond then I don’t see the followups.

  14. paulie June 2, 2012

@7 Funny what some people obsess about. That’s the only thing you picked out of the whole article and the only association your ..narrowly focused.. mind made?

  15. Indy June 1, 2012

Same sex marriage. It’s like way past time to make it like legal like everywhere and like stop discriminating like already.

  16. just asking June 1, 2012

    “#SSM,” is that like S&M?

  17. Ad Hoc June 1, 2012

    Major score.

Let’s hope he’ll have many such appearances!

  18. paulie June 1, 2012

    …And discussing it here…

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 1, 2012Posted in Blog, News

GOV. GARY JOHNSON ON MAY JOBLESS NUMBERS:
    GOVERNMENT KILLING JOBS

June 1, 2012, Santa Fe, NM – Saying the May jobless numbers released Friday are “no surprise, given Washington’s refusal to cut spending and get out of the way of growth,” Libertarian presidential nominee and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson today called on Congress and President Obama to “take a break from the campaigning and deal with the fact that the federal government’s bankruptcy is killing American jobs.”

In a statement, Johnson said, “How many more Americans need to lose jobs, give up on finding jobs, or accept being under-employed for Washington to stop wringing their hands and do what obviously needs to be done: Cut government spending in a truly meaningful way, get the feds out of the way of growth, and fix a tax code that does all the wrong things?

“May’s reported 8.2% unemployment rate, while a disturbing number, does not reflect the real job crisis. Outside the Beltway, everyone knows the real jobless rate is much higher, with hundreds of thousands of Americans either giving up their job searches or having to settle for less than they need to support themselves and their families. We have been stimulated to death, with some in Washington calling for even more stimulus. Last year’s budget ‘deal’ that was supposed to cut spending has turned into a massive charade, and we have a level of federal debt that is rapidly heading to Greece-like levels.

“This crisis can be fixed. Imagine an economy where the government is not sucking more than a trillion dollars per year out of the private economy with its reckless deficit spending. Imagine a tax system in which employers and individuals alike pay zero taxes on income. And imagine an environment in which government regulators don’t wake up every day with new ways to kill jobs with unnecessary intrusions into the marketplace.

“With the right leadership and the courage to truly get government and its debt off the back of our real job creators – the private sector – we could see tens of millions of jobs created virtually overnight. Yet, Washington refuses to take the only steps government can take that will actually let America get back to work.”

During Johnson’s two terms as governor of New Mexico, the state added more than 20,000 new private sector jobs, state government payroll was reduced by 1,200 workers, and taxes were reduced 14 times.
