Former Los Angeles Democratic US House Primary Challenger Marcy Winograd Switches to Green Party

January 15th, 2012 · 7 Comments

Ballot Access News reports that Marcy Winograd has changed her registration to the Green Party. Winograd challenged Democratic Congressmember Jane Harman in Democratic primaries, receiving 37.5% in 2006 and 41% in 2010 (she also ran in a 2011 special election).

According to keywiki.org, Winograd is a “former legal worker with the United Farm Workers and the Pentagon Papers defense team, Marcy Winograd helped organize the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party, crafting anti-war resolutions that swept party conventions across the country. In addition to working for an end to US occupations, Winograd led election protection efforts aimed at ensuring a verifiable voter paper trail and lobbied the FCC to oppose media consolidation. Winograd teaches at Crenshaw High School in South Los Angeles, where “she inspires her students with debate teams, journalistic endeavors, and poetry slams”.

Winograd is co-founder of Los Angeles Jews For Peace and has received support from the Democratic Socialists of America and Progressive Democrats of America.

Regarding Winograd’s latest campaign, keywiki says

Her Jobs, With Peace platform called for a substantial reduction in the military budget to invest in new green jobs. [...] Daniel Ellsberg, Ron Kovic, and Dolores Huerta backed Winograd’s campaign, supporting her call for an end to the US occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan and restoration of constitutional rights.

Hers was the last Democratic campaign I ever supported. I’m glad to see her leave the dark side.
