Political Scientist and Congressional Leader Predict Good Year for Alternative Parties

Ballot Access News reports:

Political science professor Michael McDonald has this short article posted at pollster.com. He finds a relationship between periods when the major parties are ideologically cohesive, and periods of relative minor party success. Then he notes that we are in a period when the Democratic and Republican Parties are quite cohesive. Ergo, he predicts a good year for minor parties (and, presumably, independent candidates, although he doesn’t mention them specifically).

Also at Ballot Access News, John Boehner Says Rebellion is Brewing Against Both Major Parties:

Congressman John Boehner, leader of Republicans in the U.S. House, told his caucus on May 12 that voters this year are angry at both major parties. See this Politico story. Thanks to ThirdPartyDaily for the link.

The article says Boehner made his remarks behind closed doors, so theoretically one of the Republican members of Congress must have leaked the story to Politico.

Don- you consider Chaffee and Crist to be true alternative candidates? Now Bernie Sanders I can see but not the likes of Crist, Lieberman and Chaffee. They are just garden variety Democrats and Republicans in my opinion.

  2. What is your basic problem NewFederalist ???

Like so many folks with room temperature IQ, you present hopes and opinion as facts! Such
a statement in the Year Of Chaffee and Crist!

I wish it were true but only Democrats and Republicans (and those “independents” who could not win their own party’s primary) will actually win. No true alternative candidate is going to win anything.
