Nelson Hultberg has just published a book, “The Conservative Revolution: Why We Must Form a 3rd Political Party To Win.” The paperback version is 189 pages and sells for $14.95. Hultberg is interviewed about his book in this post at The Daily Bell. Hultberg lives in Texas and has already founded the group Americans for a Free Republic. He advocates the creation of a new party, to be called the Conservative American Party, which would stand for: (1) the federal reserve could not increase the money supply more than 4% per year; (2) a 10% personal income tax for all brackets; (3) a “mind-your-own-business” foreign policy; (4) more aggressive enforcement of laws against illegal immigration.
The book has received praise from certain figures who have been associated with the Libertarian Party, including John Hospers and Tibor Machan.

Regarding the Afgan War, I am most impressed with the comments/positions of U.S. Senators Grahm & Lieberman. They share slightly different but very objective goals about the war, with which I strongly agree.
I agree with what Peter Gemma’s saying… “conservative” is all but meaningless.
The great thing about the campaign that went on to spawn the Campaign for Liberty was how it appealed to such different folks. The party name that Hultberg chose here has no such appeal. Just plain American Party would be great, but it’s taken.
. . . wonder whatall he says. C4L’s already rather partylike. It’d be a small leap for it to go full-fledged. Wouldn’t Liberty Party be a natural choice? .. . ..already taken I spose.
Bush vs Obama —- a choice between a douche and a turd sandwich.( yes thats a southpark reference)
Its a fantastic episode , and the revelation at the end is : ITS ALWAYS A CHOICE BETWEEN A DOUCHE AND A TURD SANDWICH!
Darcy – you’re the worst kind of fool.
It is the Socialist Party (formerly called Democratic party) that is ruining our country.
Although Bush was not a stellar president, he is no where near as bad as Obamalinsky…wake up, people like you will be the death of our great Republic.

As Brad said there are so many minor Conservative parties, with the Constitution Party being the biggest minor party. In my experience with third party conservative activists they typically arent keen on personal freedom just economic freedom to a degree.

Pat Buchanan recently when he asked whether it’s already too late, the damage far too great, and that America’s decline might be irreversible.

“There is an American Conservative Party, but no Conservative American Party.”
Lake: Yeah, another bunch of unimaginative Non Democans and Non Republicrats whom can not do any better than the dumb ole Establishment Duopoly Eagle or Eagle Head. Standing out from the crowd by blending in! Jus
t like Constitution Party, Veterans Party USA, etc. Just herds of sheeple not smart enuf of make a mark or a difference!
There is an American Conservative Party, but no Conservative American Party.
Nelson Hultberg is a commie moron, not a real conservative. There are no real conservatives left in the world except me. Some people in the Middle East are close, but they are not Catholic. Joseph Stalin was close, but he should have declared himself Tsar of Russia, instead of just being a dictator. Tru conservatism is bring back absolute monarchy, feudalism and church domination over society.

Lake: Nope, lots of dominoes ripe
to fall, like the COMMERCIAL
mortgage market ………
Okay, perhaps I’m too gloomily dark these days, believing as I do that the worst is yet to come in this unfolding financial calamity, one that can only get worse when one realizes that — according to the IMF — most of the world’s financial institutions haven’t even started to deal with the majority of toxic assets that led to this crisis to begin with.
Thanks, Mik, for offering an entirely different perspective…namely, that something new will emerge after the country’s collapse.
The end of one thing is the beginning of another.
Peter,
On a more somber note…
I agree entirely that third parties are necessary, perhaps now more than ever, but the real question is the one astutely posed by Pat Buchanan recently when he asked whether it’s already too late, the damage far too great, and that America’s decline might be irreversible.
Tom,
That was hilarious. You say Wilson, I say Bush. It’s a close call, either way.
I don’t think the word “conservative” applies in politics anymore. Maybe in fashion or sex, but not in candidate platforms.
The media elite have re-defined the word conservative to identify GOPers like FL Gov. Crist or SC Sen. Graham – who are slightly to the right of “moderate” Republicans like Sen. Olympia Snow or Gov. Schwarzenegger. There are no “liberal” Republicans if you read the newspapers. That phrase has fallen out of the political dictionary.
The political establishment is a bi-partisan coalition of unaccountable politicians who, with their allies – the mega bankers, greedy Wall Street shysters, and other special interest power brokers – brought the US to its knees economically. And someone made money in the process.
The political establishment also maneuvered well-meaning but naive grass-roots voters anxious for change to vote for neo-con and big government “conservative” GOPers like McCain, Cheney – and even “conservative” Democrat Joe Libierman.
All that to say traditional conservatives, libertarians, and populists supported Pat Buchanan, Ralph Nader, Chuck Baldwin, Dennis Kusinich, Ron Paul and other anti-establishment candidates over the years. They didn’t like the idea of spending their great-grandchildren’s money to go nation-building in strange countries or to bail out Wall Street zillionaires.
Third parties are necessary if we are to make the kinds of dramatic policy changes needed right now. Some who believe in those changes are still working within the established political order and with some small success. Others, even protest candidates, can make a real impact and be the stimuli (in the long run) for authentic, viable, and effective alternative political vehicles.
Darcy,
I doubt if many “conservative” voters (as re-defined post-WWII) supported Woodrow Wilson in 1912 or 1916 … and if any who did are still alive, they’re dozing away their final years in nursing homes, not showing up at Tea Party events.
That said, I agree that conservatives are poorly positioned to promise substantial change. “Too big too fail” is a quintessentially conservative point of view, and conservatism is historically unable to work up a head of populist steam unless there are swarthy people available to be thrown into the tinderbox for the purpose.
It’s funny, too, how many self-described conservatives — the same folks who gave us eight years of the worst Presidency in history —are now coming out of the woodwork to run as independent or conservative third-party candidates.
The teabaggers and others on the Right are too stupid to realize that they’re the ones who helped create the mess — an economy literally on life support — that they’re now wailing about.
Everybody always wants to reinvent the wheel. There are already a bunch of conservative parties.
