For those of you who really believe that so-called Third Parties only serve to spoil elections, then perhaps you should look into Instant Runoff Voting. This would eliminate the “wasted vote”/”spoiler” effect completely.

Joe Kennedy should have signs with his name plastered around every polling place in Massachusetts. If I recall correctly, I think you have to stay 100 feet away from the door, or something like that.

Apparently Brown’s team has been very effective at using the net to raise funds. If Coakley is on the short end of the stick it may be easy to blame Kennedy without paying attention to their own failings at organization.

No candidate “spoils” the election for another candidate. Voters own their own votes and have the right to cast them for whoever they want to support.

If Martha Coakley loses, it just means enough people did not want to vote for her.

As they say, spoiling would be a feature, not a bug. If your meat was continually spoiling in your freezer, would you ignore it or do something about it? I’m aware that one of things they could do is outlaw 3rd parties or make it extremely difficult for them, but that’s dirty pool in the eyes of a lot of voters.

On the other hand, Libertarians could be remembered for moving the outcome in a Libertarian direction.

On the other hand, this could EXPLODE the myth that Libertarians always help the Democrat and hurt the Republican.

If Coakley loses in a close race this is most likely what Kennedy will be remembered for, and will simply reinforce the perception that third parties in general, and the LP in particular, can serve no other purpose than to spoil the election for either of the two major parties.
