Paul Gogarty, Irish Green Party Lawmaker, Unloads F-Bomb In Parliament

December 12th, 2009 · 33 Comments

Huffington Post reports:

Sometimes you just have to get a little unparliamentary to get your point across.

Or so goes the thinking of Paul Gogarty, a member of Ireland’s Green Party, who unloaded some fairly colorful language on Labour Party member Emmet Stagg during a debate about cuts to social welfare Friday.

“With all due respect and in the most unparliamentary language, fuck you Deputy Stagg, fuck you, ” Gogarty shouted to a nearly empty room. He then added, “I apologize now for my use of unparliamentary language.” (Learn why he was mad here.)

In the age of YouTube, you knew this was coming.

The Green Party worldwide has long been known for it’s amazin passion and rhetorical flair.

Whether it was Petra Kelly’s unforgettable heartfelt and deeply moving speeches, or the Joschka Fischer classic in the German Federal Parliament “Mr. President, with permission, you’re an asshole!!!”

The passion of regular people deserves expression in our elected bodies.

I for one applaud the Green Party’s courage.

All the people with courage have been driven out.

I have some questions for Micheal “Accountability Mike” Cavlan. Since he’s so courageous, he should have no problem with answering them:

    1. Phil Huckelberry is a bulldog for Green ballot access. He took on the Democratic Party machine in Illinois, leading a petition drive that got 39,400 signatures in 90 days without paid petitioners. He defeated the Democrats’ frivolous challenge to the Green petitions, and Rich Whitney got more than 10% in the Governor’s race. This allowed the Illinois Greens to run far more candidates than ever before, and guaranteed us a ballot line in 2008. But you attacked him as a closet “Demo-Green” for getting into a two-way race with a Republican. Why?

    2. If getting into two-way races with Republicans is bad, then do you recommend that Greens refuse to run in strongly Republican districts, or that they try to recruit Democrats to run against themselves?

    3. Will you encourage your new political party to practice the same rules that you preach to the Greens in Question #2?

    4. You and your pals on the GNC constantly howled that our listserv moderation was “censorship”. Why didn’t your faction ever encourage their state parties to make a proposal to repeal Proposal 186, which established moderation?

    5. In your new political party, do you have Absolute Free Speech both on your listserv and at your face-to-face meetings? If not, what are you doing about it?

    6. Why did you and your pals taunt and jeer at weaker state Green Parties instead of trying to help build them?

    7. Why did you and your pals never offer any ideas on the NC listserv for recruiting candidates, winning ballot lines, registering more Greens, etc.?

    8. In your new political party, some of your state parties may grow more slowly than others. Will you offer the weaker state parties nothing but taunts and jeers?

Let me explain the Green Party are in coalition Government with a party responsible for destroying the Irish Economy. They have just brought in a Budget cutting Social welfare, Public sector pay while bailling out with public money what are in effect bankrupt banks which greedily lent out huge sums on what are know worthless properties. The Greens in Ireland are corrupt and soon to be extinct.

  • 6 tiradefaction // Dec 12, 2009 at 7:47 pm

    Greens are awesome.

  • 7 Michael Cavlan // Dec 13, 2009 at 1:11 am

    Don McDonald

I am from Ireland (well OK, I lived there for 15 years but am a Yank) and what you say is 100% true.

The Irish GP (Commant na Glas) did go into coalition government with the right wing Fianna Fail party who did slash services for the poor.

The Irish GP then lost about 60% of their seats because their membership were quite rightly pissed.

I still have my Ireland Green party cap, that was presented to me my some Irish Greens who were visiting Minnesot-ah. They knew all about this and were both pissed at their GP leader Trevor Sargent.

both of them are part of the evil destro-green cult.

oh wait, the Irish Greens lost lots of their membership over this.

    yeah, they were destructo-greens alright.

  • 8 Michael Cavlan // Dec 13, 2009 at 1:17 am

    BTW

you want a lesson in real Irish political courage?

Bernadette Devlin was County MP for Derry.

After the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings, where British para troopers shot into an unarmed crowd, killing 14 innocents, MP Bernie Devlin physically attacked the British Prime Minister.

My mother (RIP) cried out “Good on ye Bernie. Ye did it for all of us.” In our house, Ma and us all called her St Bernie. Mother hated the war in ireland but also knew why people would feel compelled to take up arms.

Well, Kavlin and many others here will no doubt be unhappy to know that I have returned. Yes, after some dangerous missions for the Vatican and Hugo Chavez, among other adventures, I have come in time to celebrate Advent, Hanukkah and Christmas with my loyal supporters and detractors at IPR. I will soon write a treatise about the progress that Catholic Trotskyism has made around the world, including a Catholic socialist country (Brazil) getting the 2016 olympics, the success of the Stupak amendment in the healthcare debate, and Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Bernadette Devlin may not have told anyone, but she was a Catholic Trotskyist. The Irish Greens who rightly oppose their party’s current political position will find a good home in Catholic Trotskyism.
God bless the pope, God bless Ireland, and God bless Barack Obama, amen.

  • 10 Catholic Trotskyist // Dec 13, 2009 at 3:11 am

I am also sorry about the poor behavior of my friend “The Last Conservative.” I have asked him not to post here anymore because he’s a fucking asshole. But I hope “Pro-Pot Anti-Pot” didn’t give you any trouble.

  • 11 Catholic Trotskyist // Dec 13, 2009 at 3:20 am

Well, according to Wikipedia, turns out Devlin is still alive. And she punched Maudling, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, not Prime Minister Edward Heath.

#9 Unlike the Green Party of Ireland, GPUS opposed the bank bailouts. So when is “Accountability Mike” going to practice what he preaches and answer my questions?

Unlike the Green Party of Ireland, GPUS opposed the bank bailouts.

How does GPofI justify that in terms of Green key values?

  • 16 Michael Cavlan // Dec 13, 2009 at 3:14 pm

    Paulie

that is a damned good question.

  • 17 MN Indy // Dec 13, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Interesting story about Bernie Devlin. I wonder what we would see if just one of our House Reps or Senators had the courage to knock the pen from Obama’s hand when he tries to sign off on the Afghan troop surge, the Dopenhagen Treaty, or the other unmentionable schemes just beneath the surface? Would we see a US Representative or Senator tazed and beaten before our eyes by the secret (police) service?

  • 18 Green Party fan // Dec 13, 2009 at 3:25 pm

VA Green raises some excellent points here.

Look my take on all of it is this.

We must continue to remember the opposition is OUTSIDE the Green Party.

The Green Party is hungry for progress, growth, peace, and stopping the wanton waste of $1 Trillion in tax dollars this year on a pentagon without an auditable accounting system, that continues to award no bid contracts.

I encourage Greens and former Greens, and Independents to unite to get the important work done.

Namely, recruit new Green candidates from left, right, and in between. Get them on the ballot in all 435 U.S. House and 34 U.S. Senate races in 2010.

That is the Change we need.

Mike, you should be one of those Green Party candidates.

Focus your work, your message to the positive.

    Look forward, not back.

It is about building a more peaceful, Green Party future, where the Green Party is the U.S. third major party.

Politics in every party is a struggle. Recognize and accept that realty, and work WITH the struggle. Those who decide are those that show up, and get on the ballot as Greens or even Independent Greens, or Green Independents..

    Green Party thanks to all.

    GP fan

I suggest you listen to this. It is myself and a friend Dori, former Greens on GP Watch blog talk radio.

    http://www.blogtalkradio.com/gregg-jocoy/2009/05/06/michael-cavlan

then go check out the Greens for Nader website

I can testify to the veracity of all the long list of statements there.

then watch GP National delegates Mike Feinstein and Audrey from VA at work.

Screeching about destro-greens. I have gone round and round and round with Audrey. That is why I simply ignore her now.

All the above also explain why I, as a Cynthia Mckinney and others fan left the GP.

Never to return. the organization is IMO bankrupt and infiltrated.

  • 20 Michael Cavlan // Dec 13, 2009 at 5:37 pm

As an aside, this story is here because….

    drum roll

the Labour Party person is giving the Green party person crap for cutting welfare to the poor in Ireland.

That is why the Green was getting so pissed off.

But hey, screw the poor, as long as middle class yuppies get to feel good about the enviornment, right?

Which really makes the point that Don McDonald had made earlier.

There is also a story about how the German Greens are supporting the Afghanistan war.

Perhaps I should intro them to the GP Watch site. After all, they cover international green party stories all the time, right?

    Sigh

Thank GOD I left the GP. what happened to Nader is symptomatic of a deeper rot.

Just like Team Obama is symptomatic of a deeper rot in the two party sham system.

my god what a shame we have the priest’s abusing the kids ,and the so call leaders in the dail showing themselves up… what a sad day for ireland the country that everyone onced loved destroyed by clowns and rapist are we the laughing stock of the world

  • 22 Dave Schwab // Dec 13, 2009 at 6:03 pm

He shouldn’t have done that. But I laughed anyway.

  • 23 VAGreen // Dec 13, 2009 at 6:30 pm

So when you are going to practice what you preach and answer my questions, “Accountability Mike”? What are you afraid of?

  • 24 Michael Cavlan // Dec 14, 2009 at 12:10 am

    VA Green

I am ignoring you. I have gone round and round and round with you. That is why I am ignoring you.

I let my record speak for itself. Nice answer you had there on GP Watch too, eh? From guy.

  • 25 Michael Cavlan // Dec 14, 2009 at 12:22 am

    Brian

Don’t worry. People still love the Irish.

just not (in Father Ted style) the fecking priests

    //:-D>——-

  • 26 VAGreen // Dec 14, 2009 at 4:41 am

I’m just holding you to the same standards that you hold others. You have spoken out against what you call “censorship” on the GNC’s listservs. Why is it so unreasonable to ask if your party has Absolute Free Speech both on your listserv and at your face-to-face meetings and if not, what are you doing to change it?

  • 27 brian // Dec 14, 2009 at 4:14 pm

    mike
i know what you mean but is a shame this is the way ireland is going.but i think it’s time the people reclaimed their country and got rid of all the filth

  • 28 Michael Cavlan // Dec 14, 2009 at 4:19 pm

    Brian

    Agreed.

    Tiochfaidh Ar La.

    If you catch my drift.

  • 29 paulie // Dec 14, 2009 at 5:55 pm

    Paulie

that is a damned good question.

    Anyone know the answer?

  • 30 paulie // Dec 14, 2009 at 5:56 pm

I wonder what we would see if just one of our House Reps or Senators had the courage to knock the pen from Obama’s hand when he tries to sign off on the Afghan troop surge, the Dopenhagen Treaty, or the other unmentionable schemes just beneath the surface? Would we see a US Representative or Senator tazed and beaten before our eyes by the secret (police) service?

    I’m thinking yes.

  • 31 Michael Cavlan // Dec 14, 2009 at 6:12 pm

    Paulie

    Nope.

If the police would have attacked ANYONE like this, it would have been the British police doing so to Bernie Devlin.

Who, as an aside is now a “dissident” Republican in northern Ireland. Who in depest irony, is and has ALWAYS been opposed to armed struggle herself but ALWAYS stood up for the right of Irish men and women to do so, if they felt no other option was available.

These two points, which seem to be in opposition but really aren’t, is why my mother loved St Bernie.

My mother knew her and her family personally. My Ma (RIP) taught me my politics. Stand up, speak your truth, no matter who or what. She raised 5 boys on her own (single Mother, my father disappeared) in a dirt poor Catholic housing project in northern Ireland. Worked her ass off to get us all out to America.

Ma was and is my hero, as is Bernadette Devlin.

St Bernie is alive and well.

But she sure the shit is NOT a follower of Catholic Trotskyism fruit loopery. St Bernie that is.

Just for the record. Sorry, had to be said.
