Green Party leaders today called the Stupak Amendment in the recently passed US House bill on health care reform a disaster for women’s reproductive rights and a betrayal of the Democrats’ stated support for women’s rights and well-being. Many Greens foresee possible defections from the Democratic Party over the amendment.

CA: Nov. election will probably lead to 3-party special election

On November 17, 2009, there is an election for CA Assembly which has a 50% voting threshold criteria. So, it is virtually certain that there will be a second election on January 12, 2010, with the top vote-getter from each party — Democrat, Republican and Green. The Green Party candidate is Jane Rands, a systems engineer.

In TN: State chairs of minor parties deposed for 7 hours

On Friday, November 13, an Assistant Attorney General for Tennessee conducted depositions for seven hours of the former or current state chairs of the Tennessee Libertarian, Constitution, and Green Parties. The depositions were in regards to a ballot access lawsuit. Ballot Access News notes that to a certain extent, the state was trying to gather some sort of evidence that would show that the plaintiff political parties are not substantial, or that they haven’t really tried to use the existing procedures.

In Illinois, in two different races, it appears that the Democratic Party and/or folks associated with the Democratic Party are using maneuvers to knock out Green Party candidates.
Tom Tressler is a Green running for the Cook County Board. He has received a primary challenge from someone associated with a Young Democrats website.
Bill Scheurer is a Green running for Congress. The Democrats have challenged his petitions.

Ballot Access News watching Pennsylvania courts closely

At Ballot Access News, there are several cases and developments being watched in regards to ballot access and the courts in Pennsylvania. Here are three articles with situations worth watching: 1. Discussion of a new judge on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and a list of past concerns with the court. 2. Nader’s request for a re-hearing concerning the court ordering him to pay money to the people who challenged his petition. 3. An update on a ballot access case, The Constitution Party of Pennsylvania, et al v Cortes. The plaintiffs for the case include the Constitution Party, the Green Party and the Libertarian Party. Richard Winger of Ballot Access News believes that this is an important ballot access case to watch.
