No party rejects a vote, so “Big Tent" should imply party leadership that holds firmly to their core principles rather than to please everyone.

There can be a big tent - a winning coalition - whose "leaders” stand firmly on principle and, even if they "offend" a segment, it need not be fatal. For example: many Pro-Lifers voted for Obama ... many Pro-Deathers went for Reagan, yet they still had a home under the Big GOP Tent. The GOP won because they stuck to principle; however, if Ronald Reagan were a compromiser, it'd taken the wind out of their sails ... as it did with McCain. That's a loser.

Even when people disagree with you, they respect the "true believers", BECAUSE they are consistent ... thus predictable and, frankly, admirable for having the cajones to hang tough.

Moreover, The People are strongly allergic to the invertebrate babbling class in Washington. The firm & fearless voice of defiant men of principle would be refreshing, even to many libs.

Comrade Blanton,

I don't understand this last comment of yours. All I am doing is agreeing with you that true, pure anarchists should not associate with the fatally compromised Libertarian Party, and that impure libertarians belong in the GOP instead.

To read your comment #33, you would think that there was some sort of disagreement between our positions.

Like you, I think the Libertarian Party should be as small as possible, and ideally it would not exist at all.

Don't you see? We're on the same side!

Anarcho, you should get your own radio talk show. You do such a great job of distorting truth in a sarcastic manner. You also are a great mind reader.

For example, how in the world did you know that I worship Rothbard. That's me being sarcastic there.

There are so many Rothbards, I can't keep track of them all. I'm guessing you once worshipped Rothbard, but discovered he was merely a mortal at some point. That happens when you deify people who make a living off of people deifying them. Sort of like Wayne Root.

I never said the "P" word. Purge. I only pointed out the idiocy in recruiting from the ranks of Savage Nation. But, maybe I'm wrong. If you think folks like David Duke are so wonderful, maybe Savage Nation is exactly where you can meet your future comrades.

You might also meet some nice freedom loving folks at a cross-burning/covered dish event.

Drek,

I disagree that the LP is turning into “Republican-Extreme”. Rather it is simply morphing into another version of the Constitution Party whose presidential candidate, Chuck Baldwin, was endorsed by Ron Paul.

I predict Wayne Root will do to the LP what Pat Buchanan did to Ross Perot’s Reform Party. He’ll bring paleo-cons into the LP who, “. . .enjoy discussing things like sodomite marriage, rounding up wetbacks, preserving America’s culture, sub-human Muslim taxi cab drivers imposing Sharia Law on their passengers, communists taking the Christ out of Christmas, how many nukes it will take to turn the Mideast into a glass parking lot, and all the other lunatic things these idiots like to get hysterical about.”

Chuck Baldwin and paleocons are antiwar. "Sub-human Muslims"? "Turning the middle east into a parking lot"? That sounds like neocons, not paleocons.

"Thanks Anarcho, you make my point. When lunatic things are no longer deemed lunatic things by “libertarians” such as yourself, the idea of libertarianism morphs into right-wing extremism. There’s something called the GOP for those folks."

Tom, I couldn't agree with you more!

People like John Hospers, Murray Rothbard, Wayne Root, Charles Murray, Bob Barr, David Duke, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck and others with their impure libertarianism and political incorrect views must be kept from expanding the party. We must stick with the unadulterated anarchist positions we held before 1972. All these sellouts and anyone who agrees with them belong in the GOP! PURGE!

You would think that after the Barr/Root disaster of sacrificing "purity" for expedience the LP would go back to being the "Party of Principle".

Mr. Blanton,

I think the problem may have started when we started allowing Big Tent sellouts like Murray Rothbard into the ranks of our comrades...

http://www.amazon.com/review/R2UPSPLI522A28

" On each page, Rothbard comes off as flippant, erudite, jovial and politically sophisticated -- in other words, not very libertarian. He courageously praises David Duke, Philippe Rushton, and The Bell Curve; sides with Dan Quayle over his remarks regarding the decision of TV star Murphy Brown to conceive her child out of wedlock...."

Clearly, Rothbard was not a true libertarian.

The Libertarian Party also went downhill noticeably when it sold out by nominating pro-war, anti-anarchist John Hospers for president in 1972.

We must restore the Party to the ideologically pure, politically correct stances it held before these impostors took over.

"Wayne Root, Michael Savage and Glenn Beck are not 100% pure anarchist libertarians. We simply can’t allow that in this party! We have to maintain political correctness and keep our party small!"

After reading that again, I think I will be needing psychiatric treatment. At minimum, I feel the need to self-medicate. Totally unfucking believable.

I'm hoping Anarcho is joking.

The more the LP has embraced conservatives, the smaller the party has gotten. This is simply a fact, not an opinion. Count the numbers. The reason being is that actual libertarians leave in frustration because the LP no longer represents their ideas.

Don't any LP members wonder why there is so little representation in the LP of people affiliated with other libertarian organizations? Most of the other libertarian organizations rarely mention the LP and when they do, it isn't always nice.

Anarcho, you probably enjoy a good steak. Have you considered joining a vegan group?

Comrade Blanton is right....

"conservatives and libertarians will enjoy discussing things like sodomite marriage, rounding up wetbacks, preserving America’s culture, sub-human Muslim taxi cab drivers imposing Sharia Law on their passengers, communists taking the Christ out of Christmas, how many nukes it will take to turn the Mideast into a glass parking lot, and all the other lunatic things"

Real libertarians do not allow our party to be polluted by allowing politically incorrect topics such as these to be discussed. We think any libertarian who holds politically incorrect views on these issues should be diagnosed as a lunatic and treated in a psychiatric institution, just as our left wing comrades in the USSR did.

Thanks, comrade Blanton, for standing up for the cause of political correctness and squashing dissident thought in the Libertarian Party!

Wayne Root, Michael Savage and Glenn Beck are not 100% pure anarchist libertarians. We simply can't allow that in this party! We have to maintain political correctness and keep our party small!

Tom Blanton hits the nail square on the head here.

Mr. Savage is total outside the American mainstream, and approaches falling off the right wing of the world. Associating Libertarianism with Mr Savage does great damage to our party.

Just wait until the fans of Beck and Savage start sending in their $25 and showing up at your local LP meetings.

I hope these libertarians that can't tell the difference between disgruntled conservatives and libertarians will enjoy discussing things like sodomite marriage, rounding up wetbacks, preserving America's culture, sub-human Muslim taxi cab drivers imposing Sharia Law on their passengers, communists taking the Christ out of Christmas, how many nukes it will take to turn the Mideast into a glass parking lot, and all the other lunatic things these idiots like to get hysterical about.

And old Bob here thinks I am an intimidating angrytarian. Wait until you meet the new converts to the New Libertaryan Party.

Maybe if some libertarians can manage to recruit a few liberals, there will even be some really exciting fistfights.

It just might be a good idea for the LP to recruit libertarians, but that idea seems to have been rejected a long time ago.

If Rachel Maddow repeatedly claimed to be a libertarian or if she told a heterosexual man that he should get aids and die, I just might have a problem with the Libertarian brand being associated with her. But she hasn't been fired from MSNBC for making outrageous comments like Savage was.

"MSNBC on Monday fired Michael Savage for anti-gay comments.
The popular radio talk show host who did a weekend TV show for the cable channel referred to an unidentified caller to his show Saturday as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die."
