Funny thing is, many “progressives” (read that Democrats) claimed al Al Gore, the NAFTA signing, DU using (one million Iraqi children murdered under his watch as VP) Corporate Whore was progressive.

As an aside, Ralph Nader was in Minneapolis yesterday, promoting his book Only The Super Rich Can save Us. Had some “very interesting” conversations with him about the MN OP and what we are doing here and nationwide.

The truth of it is; had the Democrats actually run a progressive candidate, Nader would not have gotten near the votes he did.

It’s a two-way street. The Democrats or Republicans blame third party “spoilers” for throwing the election. Third parties claim it as a victory is their candidate exceeded the margin of difference.

Which one is it this time, Democrats? Did Nader “spoil” the election or did Bush steal it? Everyone besides Al Gore must be responsible, right?

The spoiler argument has little merit, if any, in making sense of electoral outcomes. It is helpful, however, insofar as it provides a window into the psychology of the duopolist ideologue, whether Republican or Democrat. Assuming a Democrat or Republican wins a given election, the scapegoating of a third party and independent candidate allows supporters of the losing duopoly candidate to shirk any responsibility for their loss while denying their duopolist opponent any responsibility for his or her win.

The preliminary draft of the study is too obscure and relies on counter-factuals to make its point.

In reality, there is another way to look @ 2000 that let’s Nader off the hook for throwing the election.

The election was ultimately decided in Florida, where Ralph Nader received 90,000 votes. According to “House of Bush, House of Saud” by Craig Unger, 90,000 Arab Americans voted in Florida, and split almost evenly between George W Bush and Ralph Nader. So half of Nader’s votes came from Arabs, who otherwise would probably have voted for Bush, because of the belief that Democrats are too pro-Israel.

Since half of Nader’s votes presumably came from Bush, and some of the other half probably would never have voted for Gore, Nader probably hurt Bush in Florida more than Gore.
