The E-mail address seems to belong to Independent Green party chair Carey C. Campbell. In 2007 he filed the e-mail address as his own with the Virginia State Board of Elections

Grundmann’s comments were either fakes or he sincerely thinks he’s vice chairman of the Californian American Independent Party.

Yes, we can ban IPs, but in this case it may be painting with too broad a brush, as there are many legitimate comments from the same IP from several other people, as far as I can tell – unless they are in fact not legitimate comments.

That is what I am trying to figure out.

Well if GPW was able to ban people, then IPR should be able to ban people as well.

Theoretically, we could.

It’s just that a lot of apparently legitimate comments from several people, including one of those that writes for IPR, are coming from the same floating AOL IP as the fake Lussenheide comments.

Unless those comments are fake as well.

Figuring the extent of that problem is probably the main reason for this post.

Yeah, bannings on WP blogs are very difficult. Blogger too. I actually tried and failed to ban someone on Blogger last year because I couldn’t even figure out what IP he’d posted from.

Jeremy,

1) According to both GPW and Lussenheide, it actually is illegal in some states. As to whether it should be or not, that is a separate issue. There could be potential liability here; I’m not sure whether it could extend to IPR, or what the likelihood of any actual legal action would be.

2) I’m not sure how, exactly, we could ban this person. As far as I have been able to determine, the posts originated from a portable AOL IP from which Cody Quirk, Don Grundmann and several other people have frequently posted — unless all those posts were also faked, and I saw nothing about them which would indicate they were.

It is, however, somewhat odd that all of the comments were made (or allegedly made) by people who are or were involved with the Constitution Party and/or anti-migrant movement in Southern California, with the exception of one comment by (or allegedly by) a Libertarian candidate. For all I know, he may be anti-migrant, too – many Libertarians these days, unfortunately, are.

Don’t any Greens or other folks in Southern California or Nevada use AOL as well?

In any case, I’d like to find out whether Quirk, Grundmann and others are in fact also being impersonated here as Lussenheide claims.

I have to say, I do not believe this is a prosecutable offense. It is a dick move and the perpetrator deserves to be banned, but I don’t think it’s illegal. People do this stuff all the time on the Internet.
