Ballot Access News

New York state held primaries for partisan local office on September 15, in preparation for the November 3, 2009 general election. Write-in votes in the September primary are being tallied. In Putnam County, four write-in candidates seeking the Independence Party nomination for various local offices defeated their opponents, even though those opponents’ names were printed on the ballot. See this story. Thanks to Bill Van Allen for the link.

    Wow! This story is great.

It is great to know that when party bosses and party bureaucrats get out of control, they can be overturned by the grassroots.

I would guess my politics would be different than some of the write-in winners. But, I am glad for anyone who put themselves up for election and won fairly.

One big downfall of the “fusion” parties and cross-endorsement schemes in New York, is that “fusion-style-third-party” bosses only want to latch on to major party candidates. So, all the thousands of folks that register in those little parties never really get to run for office. If their third party doesn’t run third party candidates, when these people sign up, they are basically giving up their own chance to run for election.

So, cool that a registered Independence Party person got kicked off the ballot in the primary, but found a way to win!

I edited the Wikipedia article on “Write-in candidate” to include this story.
