LNC meeting: live broadcast

July 18th, 2009 · 147 Comments

See UPDATE below in red.

The following is supposed to be the live broadcast of the LNC meeting, starting 8:30 AM Central time today. Tom Knapp plans to twitter from the meeting as well. For some background see here, here, and here.

In regards to some of the agenda items discussed in the last two links, IPR has received the text of the resolution of apology and restitution:

Resolution of Apology and Restitution

Whereas Treasurer Aaron Starr violated his fiduciary responsibility to the Libertarian Party and the members of the Party by:

1. Conspiring to violate the bylaws to unseat Mr. R. Lee Wrights, an At-Large member of the LNC, costing that body considerable time;

2. Publicizing confidential records of two donors (Mr. Sean Haugh and Mr. R. Lee Wrights) without their permission;

3. Failing to correct the errors in said records before their publication;

4. Using said records to libel both individuals by improperly characterizing Mr. Sean Haugh’s gift membership to Mr. R. Lee Wrights as “an illegal contribution”;

5. Using errors in said records to falsely claim that Mr. R. Lee Wrights was ineligible to be elected to the position of LNC Vice Chair in 2004;

6. Giving our paid FEC consultant, Ms Paula Edwards, incomplete information, causing her to render an opinion she later repudiated;

Therefore, be it resolved that Treasurer Aaron Starr is hereby required to publicize his written retraction addressing all six of the above errors, misstatements, and libel per se along with his written apology to both Mr. R. Lee Wrights and Mr. Sean Haugh. Failure to do so within the next 10 days shall result in an automatic dismissal from the LNC.

Further, because Mr. R. Lee Wrights and Mr. Sean Haugh may have suffered damage to their reputations due to Treasurer Aaron Starr’s disclosure, Mr. Starr is instructed to negotiate appropriate restitution with these two individuals and report on the results of these negotiations at the next LNC meeting.

UPDATE: We also received a legal opinion from Marakay Rogers in regards to this resolution. It is appended here.

    Why has the comment section become a place for “Paulie” to verbally urinate? 39 out of 42 comments, most of them half-thoughts meaningless to most.

    He has an arrogant lack of respect for everyone else, he should not be allowed more than 5% of the comments.

  • 44 George Phillies // Jul 18, 2009 at 10:50 am

    The motion on LaBianca stayed on the floor. Ruwart tried to strike the Labiance and something else motion, and appeared to have limited support even from the radical caucus.

    The motion to strike the Sean Haugh and something else was stricken. There was a hand vote on Mattson’s motion to strike the Sean Haugh issue passed 9-8.

    Voting in favor of striking were, so far as I could see,
    Sink-Burris
    Mattson
    Hinkle
    Sullentrup
    Jingozian
    Starr
    Flood
    Karlan

    Voting against were
    Fox
    Rob Latham
    Ruwart
    Lark
    Wrights
    Colley
    Dixon
    Hawkridge

    The chair voted YES to break the tie.

    There was not a roll call vote, but there was a hand vote.

    In other notes: Austin Peterson is leaving us for Cato. The chair signed a contract with Wes Benedict to make him Executive Director. It appeared that the Treasurer had issues with the contract. For starters, the estimated surplus for the year had been $69,000, which will not pay for a plausible ED salary.

    Karlan moved to limit distribution of financial reports to 2008 delegates who are sustaining members. State delegates who are state rather than national party members are apparently second class citizens.

    John Buttrick gave a talk someplace that I did not catch saying the LP increasingly did not matter.

    You want a place with comment quotas? You’re in the wrong place.

    You may want to take a look at who posted the article, genius. If I did not post this article you would have 0% of the comments. Other people are welcome to comment or not comment as much or as little as they want. That includes me.

    I actually have a lot of respect for most of the people here, but that would not include you.

    Also, if you pay any attention, most of those comments are not actually mine, I’m just reporting them.

    Anyway, I’m done urinating on you, time to flush and wash my hands.

  • 46 Steve LaBianca // Jul 18, 2009 at 11:30 am

    I wonder if anyone will feel the least bit uneasy about an agenda item where I am not present to make a statement, or answer questions., or respond in any other fashion.

    This whole “agenda item” regarding me is very amusing. Karlan says everyone will be happy with his motion . . . even me! We’ll see. I am so ascared!

  • 47 Steve LaBianca // Jul 18, 2009 at 11:36 am

    Also interesting, is that a much more serious agenda item regarding Starr/Haugh, was swept under the rug by the Reformers, while a ridiculous agenda item regarding me is kept.

    Also interesting that Dan Karlan voted to strike the Starr/Haugh agenda item, but was the one to introduce the agenda item regarding me! Where are this man’s priorities? In the toilet, I’d say.

  • 48 Steve LaBianca // Jul 18, 2009 at 11:51 am

    Seeing the live stream, am I mistaken that Rob Latham is standing in for me? The board accepts that? What about my acceptance or rejection of it?

    This board is acting more and more like the state every day, like court dockets saying “the People vs. . . .”. Is this like “LNC vs. Steve LaBianca”, with a court appointed attorney (Latham) in my stead?

  • 49 Rob Latham // Jul 18, 2009 at 12:02 pm

    Steve,

    I spoke with Dan and we’re not going to do that. So, you’re on your own. ;-)

  • 50 Steve LaBianca // Jul 18, 2009 at 12:10 pm

    Hey Rob, thanks for the update. However, as Mary Ruwart had pointed out in her objection of the motion, the core problem is that “I am on my own” in the sense that the board is free to conduct this agenda item with zero input from me.

    Anybody ever heard of a “kangaroo court”?

  • 51 Michael H. Wilson // Jul 18, 2009 at 12:17 pm

    My audio is not working so I appreciate the written comments. Keep it going one and all.Thanks,
    MW

  • 52 Steve LaBianca // Jul 18, 2009 at 12:19 pm

    I’d also re-emphasize that this whole “Discipline – or not – of Steve LaBianca” to be a huge representation of what the LNC is about . . . a Reform Caucus agenda to focus the LP on “Just Win, Baby”, and take up valuable time to shed a bad light upon those who challenge that “win” objective”.

  • 53 paulie // Jul 18, 2009 at 12:22 pm

    Also interesting, is that a much more serious agenda item regarding Starr/Haugh, was swept under the rug by the Reformers, while a ridiculous agenda item regarding me is kept.

    Both should have been stricken, use the time more productively!

  • 54 Steve LaBianca // Jul 18, 2009 at 12:33 pm

    Regarding the vote for striking the Starr/Haugh agenda item – “The chair voted YES to break the tie.”

    It should now be clear for everyone to see, that Redpath is a tool of Aaron Starr.

    It would seem to me, that in an 8 to 8 tie, Redpath, in being “non-partisan” would allow the agenda item to go forward. Guess what . . . Redpath ISN’T non-partisan!

  • 55 paulie // Jul 18, 2009 at 12:56 pm

    “I hope that you will proceed in a spirit of amity, and urge you to use your time productively. Do not waste it on internal bickering, attempts to censure or expel other Libertarians, and other such trivia. Our country is in deep trouble.”

    I’d be interested in knowing some of the info in the Treasurer’s report.

    Are we FEC compliant?

    And how is fundraising going compared to previous years at this time?

    What are the membship numbers looking like?

    Do we see any states that have had improvements and if so why?

    Any analysis as to why?

    Thanks,
    MW

  • 60 Steve LaBianca // Jul 18, 2009 at 2:28 pm

    lib-girl;

    When a vote is divided 8 – 8, Redpath is then put in the position of deciding for the LNC, whether or not the question is up or down.

    My assertion was, that when put in this position, he will err on the side of his cronies Starr, Mattson, et al. Thus, he is not even handed.

  • 83 George Phillies // Jul 19, 2009 at 7:57 am

    @66
    Labianca has not been informed of the issue, when last I was in touch with him. The assertion that it has to do with the sexual harassment policy that ignores LNC members who routinely address one regional representative as “Doctor Lark” and another regional representative not as “Mrs. Hawkridge” but as “Rachel” — as visible a sign of misogynistic harassment as you can get — is a sensible speculation but not based on what Mr Karlan said yesterday.

    Dr. Phillies,

    I don’t think “Dr. Lark” cf. “Rachel” is misogynistic. Addressing someone with an earned title as such and others with first names is not per se sexist. However, your point would be apt if Dr. Ruwart were addressed as “Mary” because then it is an apples to apples comparison.

    @83, @104: just to add fuel to the fire–has it occurred to anyone to ask why the officials of a party whose most moderate members are, presumably, skeptical about the state and its military machine seem so careful to use the state-conferred title “Admiral”?

    I’d vote for “Mr.” and “Ms.” or, better yet, first names for everyone. But the implicit deference to the military as an institution seems a little surprising.

    11:21 LiveCircusLNC: Ok, it sounds like the rest of the day is pretty much exec scession or members only. As such, the broadcast is finished.
    11:21 LiveCircusLNC: Thank you for viewing.
    11:21 Semyaza: Thanks!
    11:22 tannim123: c ya!
    11:22 Semyaza: The highlight for me was hearing the activist-centered speakers during open comments. It was a plesant contract to the mind numbing bureacracy otherwise being discussed.
    11:23 Semyaza: pleasant contrast, rather.
    11:25 paulieayatolie: exactly
