The Green Party endorses International Seeds Day on April 26, asks for repeal of Order 81 which makes Iraqi farmers dependent on US firms

The Green Party of the United States has endorsed International Seeds Day on April 26, which will mark the fifth anniversary of the passage and signing of Order 81 by Paul Bremer, administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq. Order 81 prohibits Iraqi farmers from reusing seeds harvested from new varieties introduced in Iraq and registered under the law. Order 81 has made farmers in Iraq — who have planted since 7000 BCE — dependent on companies like Monsanto.

Will Lincoln Chafee in Rhode Island add to the pantheon of independent Governors?

In America, it is still possible to win for Governor as an independent. The list of independent Governors includes: Angus King for Maine, Walter Hickel for Alaska, Jesse Ventura for Minnesota, and Lowell Weicker for Connecticut. Now, former United States Senator Lincoln Chafee, and independent, has filed papers to run for Governor of Rhode Island.

A proposed bill in California that would de-regulate Democratic Party internal rules

Twenty years ago, U.S. Supreme Court decision Eu v San Francisco County Democratic Central Committee said that state government has no authority to describe how political parties should be organized. The spirit of this ruling is being used to introduce a bill in California to make the state Democratic Party entirely responsible for its own internal organization – instead of having rules imposed by the state.

Quigley Takes 5th District Congressional Seat

Election Summit and Conference held in Ohio, with assistance of Brennan Center for Justice

A report about the “Election Summit and Conference” convened by Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner in Ohio. It’s purpose was to reflect on the 2008 election in Ohio and reforms for 2009. The conference is a good model for election reform in that the government brought in the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law and other non-partisan experts. And, the report speaks of stakeholders and consensus. Though, it should be noted that it is lauded as “bipartisan”, even though some of the issues at stake were in regards to minor party (ie: multi-partisan) issues.
