Libertarians cordially invite you to a Tea Party

Press Release

Anti-tax rallies “the kind of ‘community organizing’ Obama should have been doing”

WASHINGTON — America’s third largest party is urging Americans to join millions of libertarians and other advocates of economic freedom at one of thousands of “Tea Parties” being held on April 15.

The “tea party” concept started with the Libertarian Party of Illinois (LPI) who began organizing a 2009 Tax Day ‘Boston Tea Party’ in Chicago back in December of 2008 and created a Facebook group for it on Feb. 10, 2009, according to the LPI. Nine days later, CNBC’s Rick Santelli, broadcasting from the floor of the Chicago stock exchange, popularized the concept.

“Americans agree with the Libertarian Party that taxes and spending are out of control, and that bailouts and nationalizing industries destroys freedom and prosperity. The Libertarian Party is the only party supporting shrinking budgets, lowering tax burdens, eliminating deficits and getting government out of the way of recovery,” said Ferguson.

“With the Republican Party in Washington joining Democrats in proposing their own bloated budget that expands spending and explodes the deficit, and Republicans in other states touting their plans to raise taxes and jack up spending during a recession, Americans must speak out and speak out forcefully,” said Ferguson.

The public rallies, organized locally by concerned citizens of various political affiliations around the country, will express the widespread majority opposition to the government takeovers of private industries led by Obama, and the bailout programs, expanded spending and larger deficits proposed by both Democrats and Republicans.

“Tea Parties are the kind of ‘community organizing’ Obama should have been doing, instead of peddling government dependency,” said Ferguson.

A national listing of Tea Party events can be found at http://www.lp.org. If you know of a Tea Party not listed, contact [email protected] with the time and location so it may be added.

For more information on this issue, or to arrange an interview with the Libertarian Party, please call Director of Communications Donny Ferguson at 703-200-3669, 202-333-0008, x. 225, or email [email protected].

We handed out tea bags. So see, nothing is new.

It just wasn’t very big, and its only bigger this year because the Republicans are doing it, and thus Fox is advertising it.

  3. paulie April 14, 2009

LP IL’s idea this year was to do something much bigger and more dramatic than the usual April 15 thing at the post office, and to associate it with the Tea Party concept. That was new.

  4. a different paul April 14, 2009

The idea most certainly did not start in Illinois this year. I can’t speak for everywhere, but the idea has been around and executed most tax days for at least 10 years in Virginia, and I believe longer.

The LP is about to learn a lesson. The Republicans aren’t joining us – they’re taking over our idea – and no one will notice we were there nor that we been doing this for years.

The LP take should be 1) the GOP will ruin this annual activity, 2) the GOP is hypocritical, because its responsible for more of the spending than is the Democrat Party.

What do we do when the Tea Party is over?

    Let’s Change Our Politicians

The existing situation – Many Americans believe our political system is broken and in serious need of reform. It may not be the system, more than likely the real problem is the individuals we have chosen to administer our system of government.

The founding fathers provided for the people to be represented by those among us that choose and are selected to serve. Over time what has evolved is a pseudo-democratic process where only professional politicians thrive and millions of dollars are required just to participate in the electoral process. We have allowed self-serving “professional” politicians too much authority, they are out of touch, and they are often not following the will of the people.

Our national politicians have become expert at, and content with, deferring the difficult challenges in favor of wasting elaborate amounts of time on issues with little or no actual [national] value. They appear to be often and instantly distracted by the most insignificant issues preferring gridlock instead of working through and solving the important issues that continue to plague our society.

There are many distinct factions that are distracting and dividing the voting public. As a matter of practice “we the people” are being deceived and divided into small individual interests units that tend to cloud our collective ability to focus and thus insist on a successful unified national strategy. Our politicians seem to be primarily focused on getting elected and re-elected rather than doing the job they are elected to do.

The existing bureaucracy empowers and encourages lawmakers to do as they please. The senior Congressional leadership has an established system founded in cronyism and the few new Congressional members each year have no opportunity to change the process or introduce new ideas because of this long established “system.” If practices or procedures were changed the senior members would lose some or all of their power or authority they have “earned” while serving for many years.

We are governed nationally by one president, five hundred thirty five Congressmen and women [435 Representatives and 100 Senators], and nine Supreme Court justices. The Justices are appointed for life, the president is often a figure head with limited authority (except, of course, for his military power), so let’s focus on the members of Congress and apply our “will” to insist on reforming their behavior and the way they conduct their daily business.

    How do we do it?

——-Ah, if you are Lib, Lib Lite, Only Lib, then you are partisan! Doh!

  7. paulie April 13, 2009

    I emailed you.

  8. Erik Geib April 13, 2009

    Paulie,

what’s your e-mail? I’ll send you his contact info.

  9. mdh April 13, 2009

That’s an old street address too. The correct address for the LPWV (checked by myself and two other folks as well) is:

    PO Box 4428
    Star City, WV 26504

  10. paulie April 13, 2009

For those curious, a largely unreported (or perhaps just under-reported) story about this whole tea party movement involves the Illinois LP. State Chair David Brady was originally planning his tea party as far back as December (at least), and invited the now-notorious Rick Santelli to attend. Santelli, however, decided to steal the ILLP’s thunder, and act as if this was his own idea on national television. Thereafter, the conservatives have been pretending to have principles concerning this ever since.

I’d like more details about this, it would make an interesting article here.

  11. Erik Geib April 13, 2009

    Matt,

I’ll be sure to pass that along.

The info in front of me was listed as:

    [email protected]
(street address is on University Ave., I’m not going to post that)
and then the LPWV # as posted before.

  12. mdh April 13, 2009

The ask-lpwv number has not been correct since I have been involved in the state party. My cell phone number is 662-934-7060, and my email address is [email protected]. Text messages to my cellphone will always receive the quickest response. Emails usually have under 48 hour turn-around unless I’m on vacation.

  13. Erik Geib April 13, 2009

For those of you wondering why we didn’t leave a message, it’s because the office is small and there are many other tasks to be accomplished. We didn’t have the time, nor do we have the resources, to handle 40 states calling us back with the expectation the list could be put out in a timely manner.

  14. Erik Geib April 13, 2009

Matt (I’m assuming based on the blog address),

A different intern sent out the individual e-mails, and I was under the impression that someone in the office also sent out a mass e-mail. I did the web research and the phone calls. The only number I have listed for West Virginia is 1-888-ASK-LPWV (I don’t have your personal number on the State Chair Contact Info. sheet, which was last updated on 3/16/09), and I was told not to leave a message since this task was accomplished last Tuesday and Wednesday only. We weren’t aiming to make this a comprehensive report, we just wanted to respond to a couple of requests we had received from members at the last second by providing them with a list of events that we could substantiate. This needed to be done in a time-effective manner so that people would be able to plan in advance to attend one of these events.

  15. mdh April 13, 2009

    Erik,
I never received email or phone contact from you. I am in regular phone and email contact with Bill Redpath, and have been in contact with Donny Ferguson as well back in February when he was helping Bill and I out with some scheduling stuff, so I am wondering why that is?

  16. Erik Geib April 13, 2009

  17. Erik Geib April 13, 2009

To anyone curious as to why certain events and/or states weren’t included, I can answer (as I’m the one who did this research for headquarters).

The task assigned was to find out which parties the state LP parties supported. This was accomplished by originally e-mailing all the state chairs, then I combed the state LP websites, then I tried to call all the state chairs. We only incorporated into this report those who responded.

Many tea parties aren’t listed because we couldn’t confirm whether libertarians would be involved or not, and we did not want to be seen as advocating one attend something only involving conservatives. We accepted that we would likely miss a number of events involving libertarians by doing this, but as the national party office we couldn’t risk being portrayed as an advocate of conservative rallies.

  18. Michael Seebeck April 10, 2009

Be advised the California Revolution has not been hijacked by anyone. We are truly non-partisan and our roots are ONLY libertarian.

I hope people going to these things have rotten tomatoes for the neocon scum that seem to be hijacking these events.

Join Gov. Perry at a Tax Day Tea Party
In 1773, a group of American colonists dumped tea into an ocean harbor to protest excessive taxation and the violation of their rights. Their act became known as the Boston Tea Party, and it still serves as a symbol of the American Revolution to this day. On April 15, “tax day,” you will have the opportunity to join your fellow patriots from all around the country in a nationwide protest of the new administration’s disturbing escalation of spending, debt, and taxation.

Please watch this YouTube video from Governor Perry, inviting you to join the events around the state:

Find a tea party near you from the list below, and lend your voice to a growing chorus of citizens who reject the administration’s overreaching agenda and mismanagement of the economy.

Governor Perry is excited to join his fellow Texans on April 15; he is slated to speak at the events at City Hall in Austin and at LaGrave Field in Ft. Worth. For the most up-to-date list and contact information for each event, please visit http://taxdayteaparty.com/teaparty/texas/.

Join Governor Perry at one of the following tea parties where he will be appearing.

    City: Austin
    When: 11:30 AM-1 PM
    Where: City Hall, downtown

    City: Fort Worth
    When: April 15, 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Where: LaGrave Field, 301 NE 6th Street

  20. pumabydesign001 April 10, 2009

Magnificent blog. I have been blogging for the past month trying to get the attention of non-Republicans. The media is bending over backwards overlooking and downplaying the tea parties, while others would have Americans believe that this is an initiative solely relegated to the Republican Party.

Thank you for setting the record straight.

  21. Trent Hill April 9, 2009

Sure. But just create an event and go through ReTeaParty.

  22. derkel April 9, 2009

Look at the people associated with the taxdayteaparty.com website. They have Michelle Malkin as a sponsor.

  23. mdh April 9, 2009

We tried in Morgantown. The folks running taxdayteaparty ignored my email and my post on their website, and instead posted the details of an event that was planned by a prominent Republican. It seems almost certain that the folks running the taxdayteaparty site must either be GOP shills, or completely incompetent. My money’s on the former.

  24. Mik Robertson April 9, 2009

It seems to depend on the event and the particular organizer. Some are more partisan Republican events, some are Campaign for Liberty folks, some are LP organizers, some don’t want any partisan presence at all. The way to keep it from becoming a Republican Anti-Obama rally is to organize your own event.

  25. derkel April 9, 2009

Sadly the tea parties have been ruined. Republicans and neo-cons have hijacked these to turn them into partisan anti-Obama events.

Nobody is going to recognize the few of us who are actually there to make a change. They are only going to show the Republicans with their anti-Obama signs.

Looks like they don’t have anything listed for California on the LP post. Odd.
