Florida “Green Party” candidate

March 12th, 2009 · 2 Comments

A blog post at Broward Palm Beach.com reports that Sarah Roman, a candidate who won the Florida Green Party’s ballot slot simply by filing the necessary fee, is represented by attorney Jeff Lucas. Roman has been told by Pasco Circuit Judge Stanley Mills that she must provide the Green Party with financial information to prove where her filing fee came from, and answer other questions from Florida Green Party lawyers.

The post includes this:

Lucas is a big-time GOP dude, a former head of the Pasco County Republican Party, donor to political campaigns including those of Gov. Charlie Crist and President Bush, and financial supporter to fine institutions such as the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Republican Party of Florida.

I am so happy that the Florida Greens have decided to take this action, and follow through with lawsuits about a sneaky, duopoly maneuver. Paying attention to details, and catching the bad guys red-handed when you can, and not letting them go, that is a great strategy. Good luck in pursuing this strategy. I think other third parties should study this for their own similar actions. And, also, perhaps the Florida Greens are creating some precedents in how courts deal with stealth candidates and interference from a major party into the minor parties.
