We’ll be tired of bailouts, if this time next year (2010) there is no upturn. THEN, America will grow sick of this bailout – AND the president.

We’re probably going to end up much like the late 70s/early 80s, with inflation, interest rates and UE all in the 10% range. Not a depression… but not great by any means.

The Dems and Reps will be unable to explain what happened. Their bankruptcy will be clear. Will the LP be ready with a credible explanation and alternative?

I agree. But of course, there are many other peace and civil liberties issues, and left-friendly, bottom-up ways of explaining non-statist economics.

If there is another depression and world war with Obama, as I think there may very well be, the situation becomes much more fluid, and the possibility that one or both major parties collapse or reorient their positions, and/or that the electoral system or the US as a whole collapses, rises dramatically.

Most change happens as a punctuated equilibrium.

Crisis=opportunity.

Now, the real question: when will the LP give more former Democrats a reason to switch their voter registration, as Obama is already busy selling out every peace and civil liberties constituency that helped put him in office?
