I am one signature away from filing the official paperwork for the candidacy of Barry Cooper (of Never Get Busted fame) for the office of Texas Attorney General.
This will be a statewide race, four-year term, and will be – so far – the first announced LP candidate for this office.
Upon Barry’s signature, we will be the first-to-file so we can begin raising money (I say we because I’ll be working as his campaign manager) for this important race.
So far, two Republicans, Congressman Michael McCaul, R-Austin, and state Rep. Dan Branch, R-Dallas, are looking at jumping into the race. (Current AG Greg Abbott is expected to get into the race for Lt. Governor)
We want a Cooper vs. McCaul match-up because of the congressman’s former federal prosecutor status in the War on Drugs.
With Barry’s notoriety, we could get some major media attention in an election in which Kay Bailey Hutchison will steal the gubernatorial limelight.
We’re planning an official announcement soon, but filing the paperwork for treasurer is the first step that a candidate can (legally) make to raise money and spend it.

Friends,
I will be meeting with Barry and his wife in Austin next week to discuss the campaign treasurer appointment and chart the strategy of building up the LPTX into 254 select “delegate clusters,” i.e., building the grassroots network needed to win the delegate vote next summer at the state convention.
We’ve got a site name – BarryCooper2010.com – but will launch the official site when our treasurer is announced.
info@barrycooper2010.com for those who are curious to know more, or want to help.
We want to build a framework for future campaigns/candidates and future statewide success. It’ll be a true grassroots effort.
We want Michael McCaul to be the GOP nominee. I think our media strategy will be better at employing if McCaul is the guy we face in the general election.

Please explain. What, are you expecting thousands of people at this convention?

A cynical mind might suspect that this is an undercover operation to elect McCaul

Well I’m happy that it is for attorney general and not governor. Although with the way the drug war has been going lately he should probably run for something in El Paso.

Gene, I appreciate the support.
I’ve officially been named the campaign manager, so I will make IPR the exclusive media outlet for our updates should they want them (I’ll also post them on JoeyGDauben.com as well.)
This will include updates on the Web site, etc.
We appreciate all of the support so far. This is a campaign in its infancy, and already we’re getting loads of support.
It’s amazing.

Joey,
Thanks for the exclusive news tips. As im sure you understand, we wont be able to post on every little thing–but we promise to cover the interesting news tid-bits for EVERY candidate.
And this goes to every candidate, future candidate, and activist who reads IPR–we are not ideologically driven. Socialist, Libertarian, Green, Moderate, or Theocratic—we post on third-party news, not on “our favorites”.
