I can see libertarianism’s point. The state does rely on physical force to enforce its laws. Many people don’t recognize this even when asked or even when it’s pointed out but it’s a reality that must be recognized. I think the harm done to people when enforcing the law, even harm done to people for doing harm should be weighed as a negative in evaluating a decision’s utility.

But unlike a libertarian I don’t assume that every single case where physical force is used against people for something besides physical force is a bad thing. It depends on whether the good of the policy outweighs the bad. Many people don’t include the harm applied to offenders in weighing a law’s utility, which is how we wind up with laws passed purely for aesthetic reasons (examples: lawn laws, laws against public nudity). Health care is an example of when I believe that the good it provides outweighs the bad. The negative of universal health care i.e. force used to gather taxes to fund free health care for all is outweighed by the positive i.e. saving human lives and keeping people healthy.

I disagree. It is not a line that holds true at all really. For Hamas, maybe. For general Palestinians not really. They just want to live in peace like the Israelis.

The Israeli government has never once actually tried to find peace either. They have never withdrew from all illegal settlements in the West Bank (over 200), knocked down their illegal Bethlehem wall, lifted the martial law that has been in place for 41 years, or leave the Palestinians to themselves. They may not have been attacking, but they still had every single one of those policies in place.

I could go on, but I think you get the point. To paint this as only one side is to blame does not due reality justice.

I wasn’t trying to be cute, it’s unfortunately a line that rings out true, much like hamas’ mandate to destroy Israel – but people don’t seemed to be troubled by that. Speaking to your quote, Israel tried that, and it was the Palestinian leadership that let their people down – which is something else that is easily forgotten.
