City Council races in Burlington, Vermont on March 3rd

Burlington, Vermont is one of the most friendly cities in the nation to third parties.  On “Town Meeting Day,” which will be March 3rd this year, citizens will gather and elect local officials with instant runoff voting.  Their choices include independents, Burlington Greens, Democrats, Republicans, and Progressives.

While there will be more than just the City Council at stake (and there will be elections throughout Vermont), tonight I will only be covering the Burlington City Council for the sake of time.  There are seven wards that are represented on the city council that are being contested in March,, and the city council currently has six Democrats, three Republicans, three Progressives, and two independents.… Read more ...

Libertarian Party blog: Misnamed Obama ‘stimulus’ spending package costs could top $1 trillion

The Politico today reports when interest costs are added to the $825 billion government spending plan proposed by President Barack Obaama, the total costs to taxpayers could top $1 trillion.

In a letter to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), ranking member of the House Budget Committee, Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf reports the interest cost would be $347 billion over 10 years, meaning the $825 billion plan could cost as much as $1.172 trillion.… Read more ...

Indianapolis City-County Council reappoints two Libertarians

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The Indianapolis City-County Council has voted to reappoint two Indianapolis Libertarians to the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals in Indianapolis for a one-year term. Libertarian Party urges ‘no’ vote on Eric Holder

Attorney General nominee hostile to Second Amendment rights

WASHINGTON, D.C. — America’s third-largest political party urged the Senate Wednesday to reject the nomination of Eric Holder to be Attorney General, citing his record of hostility to Second Amendment rights.

“The Attorney General is expected to defend our Constitutional rights, not infringe them,” said Libertarian Party spokesman Donny Ferguson, “Americans value the precious rights protected by the Second Amendment, and they demand the Senate reject this nomination.”

Nominated by President Barack Obama to lead the Justice Department, Holder earned the ire of gun rights groups while Deputy Attorney General under then-President Bill Clinton, from 1997 to 2000.… Read more ...

North Carolina ballot access bill expands

Ballot Access News:

Earlier it was reported here that North Carolina Senator Jim Jacumin planned to introduce a bill, lowering the number of signatures for independent candidates. Senator Jacumin now plans to expand the bill so that it also lowers the number of signatures for minor parties. Furthermore, the bill will delete the requirement that declared write-in candidates must submit a petition of 500 signatures.
