Richard Winger advises Greens to target Indiana, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, and Oklahoma for ballot access reform

In a comment at Green Party Watch, Richard Winger of Ballot Access News writes:

The months of November and December of any even-numbered year are the PRIME months to ask state legislators to introduce bills to improve ballot access (and to introduce bills on any subject). If people wait, the legislators will say, “Sorry; I can only introduce XX number of bills and I’ve already got my quota.” We are in a window of opportunity that only opens once every two years. Greens in Indiana, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma especially need to be active NOW and in December.

    Thanks for this post! For Libertarians, we especially need bills (in states not mentioned above) in Alabama (definition of party, fewer signatures), Alaska (definition of party), Illinois (fewer signatures), Massachusetts (primary ballot access), New Hampshire (definition of party, substitution, ability to register into unqualified parties), New Mexico (no more double petitions), Pennsylvania, Tennessee (definition of party), Virginia (definition of party). In some of these states people are already working on finding sponsors.

    And how would we go about lobbying our delegations in regards to these bills? Phone calls and letters? The Green Party of Alaska is very unorganized right now so it would be nice to get pointers from somewhere.

    The Libertarian Party of Connecticut could use some revitalization as well, if anyone’s interested in helping them.

    That’s good. We definitely need to ease up on these statist regulations that keep third parties out of the game.

    This is about what Crick and I proposed and i believe is still LP policy. The LP is supposed to have a separate fund to attack these ballot problems head on as has worked in other states.
