“This is just the first step,” Munger said. “We got the signatures and we satisfied the requirements of the State by playing Simon Says in just the way they wants us to.”
Now he said its time for the Libertarian Party to take the next step and run competitive races for several General Assembly seats and other offices. Munger then announced he would seek the Libertarian nomination for NC State Senate in 2010 and the party’s nomination for governor in 2012.
Libertarian Michael Munger plans to run again in NC

Good for him. I hope he wins state senate and doesn’t go on to run for governor for a while.

I guess this is an early “no” to calls that he run for potus?

POTUS!?!??!?!?!
The guy just got, what?, 5% in a race for governor of a moderately sized state? And that’s reason to run for president?
I need to take a break from this weird website for a bit, focus on the Ni4D and watching Bush to make sure he doesn’t do anything crazy and pressuring Obama to be more independent, and just chill out.

Munger has said before he will NOT run for Prez in 2012.

First time I’ve heard.

Looking at WRAL-TV’s county-by-county Senate results interactive map, Munger got 21% of the vote in Tyrrell County. (Of course, that was only 403 votes.)

Tyrrell County is on Albemarle Sound, way in the northeast part of the state.

The wisdom of time is that this is where we must spend more attention – running the smaller, regional campaigns. But the LP says defiantly “NO! We don’t wanna do that! We’d rather talk about liberty in a club than actually try to spread it!”
And thus we repeat the same mistakes…

I think Munger would be a plausible LP presidential candidate, based not on his showing Tuesday but on his resume. He heads the political science department at one of the nation’s most prestigious universities. That makes him more appealing than “Kochtopus” candidate Ravenal in 1983. Also, Munger is a great campaigner. That said, I hope he stays in N.C. to keep building the party there.

Agreed, Spence. He should obviously see if a run in that county would be reasonable.

He’d be a good candidate in the Bob Barr tradition of statists running as Libertarians.

No one but anarchists for GE.

I’ll take a minarchist… Not a guy who supports government schooling (and is against criticizing teachers) and various other apostasies. The guy sucks. What makes him better than real libertarian Scotty Boman?
13 G.E. // Nov 6, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Who is not an anarchist, by the way.
14 Ross Levin // Nov 6, 2008 at 10:53 pm
I don’t think anyone said he was better than Boman.

Also, to add, his debate performance – and shadow debate performance(s)- were fucking awful. Half the time, he couldn’t decide if he wanted to actually give real answers or join in the atypical “this is what I wanna say” crowd.

Ross Levin: “The guy just got, what?, 5% in a race for governor of a moderately sized state? And that’s reason to run for president?”
In the LP it is.
Wayne Allyn Root is a sports handicaper who couldn’t get on his own Nevada LP state delegation, so he carpet-bagged his family to California to stuff them into the California delegation, and he expected to run for president.
Instead, he got the VP slot, got 0.4% in his VP race, and now expects to run for president in 2012.
5% running on the LP is a landslide mandate.
No, that’s not an endorsement of Munger. I’m just pointing out that Bob Barr and Mike Gravel’s political resumes are rare in the LP.
Michael Badnarik had no political background. Neither, I think, did Harry Browne. And Browne did about as well as Barr.

Browne did better than Barr (at least in his first run), percentage wise. While he did not have a political background, he was a fairly well known author and investment adviser.

Building state and local parties is the right thing to do… the presidential campaign plays way too prominently in the Libertarian Party discussions!
19 paulie cannoli // Nov 7, 2008 at 4:40 am
It would be good to have a presidential ticket which spends the bulk of its campaigning in states with strong local and state candidates and works with those campaigns. That was far from being the case this time.

Wrong you are, Travis. All third parties are “clubs”, (as some would have you believe) and are just elaborate role playing games for political rejects.
In short, don’t even bother (with the LP that is).
21 paulie cannoli // Nov 7, 2008 at 4:47 am
Alternative parties play a major role in bringing issues into the national debate.

They do deserve congrats for holding ballot access. That will save thousands of $ and manhours which can be used elsewhere. As for him getting 21% up near Kitty Hawk, well my first wife came from near there. They are rather INDEPENDENT MINDED folk up there-LOL
I can ASSURE YOU…
I emailed Root about 18 months ago and told him there was no way he would get the nomination with his warmonger mentality. I was pleased to see he toned it down some. Root is a reader. I recommend anyone who dislikes him to send him a copy of your favorite L(l)ibertarian book with a kind note thanking him for representing the LP as VP candidate. He will read the book. It will help him to realize what you already know, without you having to verbally convience him. If a person will read liberty books, there is definitely hope for them to become true (L)libertarians. He will run again. We have two-2-three years to educate him. Send him a book…
