Constitution Party retains ballot access in Missouri

November 10th, 2008 · 11 Comments

The Columbia Missourian printed a story about the Constitution Party retaining it’s ballot access and some possible reasons for why the Libertarians did not reach the needed 2%.

The Constitution Party’s accomplishment may have come at the expense of the Libertarian Party, Missouri’s most established party after the Democrats and Republicans.

The Libertarian Party failed to reach the 2-percent threshold for any of its statewide candidates in the Nov. 4 election — a first since it appeared on Missouri’s ballot in 1992, said Libertarian Party Executive Director Greg Tlapek of Cape Girardeau.

Under Missouri law, a political party loses its reserved ballot spot if it fails to get at least 2 percent or to put forth a statewide candidate in two consecutive elections. That means 2010 will be a make-or-break year for Libertarians.

Trent, I’ve been hearing some rumors that you joined the Republican Party down in Louisiana.

Could you confirm or deny that?

Be happy to. I did indeed join the Republican party. Im working with the Republican Liberty Caucus, am the District 6 coordinator for the Campaign for Liberty, and am involved in a campaign to draft a candidate to run in 2012. More on that later. =)

I’ll see you in Tampa in December if you’re still going…

I’m going to try to go as a credentialed press guy.

I believe the next CP national committee is in Orlando. But I wont be there, no. Alot of people in the CP are VERY angry with me.

The CP sabotaged the LP’s efforts in that state. Quite obvious. Bible thumping bastards

    ….WHAT?

    Libertarian Joseph:

If the state you’re referring to is Missouri, no, the Constitution Party did not “sabotage the LP’s efforts.”

They petitioned for ballot access, and they put up candidates. That’s what political parties do. While there’s some weird overlap between the parties, we’re very different and the LP is not entitled to not have to compete with the CP, any more than the Ds and Rs are entitled to not have to compete with the LP.

I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but my recollection is that for every statewide race in which the LP and CP both ran candidates, the LP outpolled the CP — the CP got its 2% in races where the LP didn’t have candidate.

    Tom,

    You are correct on that.
