Barr, Nader, and Baldwin set to debate in Ohio

October 29th, 2008 · 32 Comments

I’ve recieved a slew of emails about a debate that Barr’s campaign is setting up Thursday, October 30th, in Ohio. Barr, Nader, and Baldwin have all tentatively confirmed their willingness to appear. No real news on who is behind the debate, what sort of media coverage it will garner, or why McKinney isn’t going to be there. More as the news comes out.

that would be tomorrow. In general, I think debates should have a little advance notice, if you want ppl to attend.

I personally don’t get into these strong responses about who attends what debate, but…in general I think it would be a net positive to have a debate.

    I’ve heard a rumor of a November 5th debate.

  • 3 darolew // Oct 29, 2008 at 2:29 pm

Wait, Barr is actually going to debate? Only once, and at the last minute? Well, that’s a first. (Seriously though, I hope this works out and Barr actually debates.)

    “I’ve heard a rumor of a November 5th debate.”

It can cater to the time-traveling electorate. I can already envision the arguments: “We already know who won the election, so you can feel safe to travel back in time and cast your vote for me.”

  • 4 svf // Oct 29, 2008 at 2:31 pm

    why bother? why????

  • 5 Trent Hill // Oct 29, 2008 at 2:31 pm

There is no independent confirmation yet, but I’v gotten emails from multiple campaigns confirming the rumor.

  • 6 Mike Gillis // Oct 29, 2008 at 2:43 pm

The Nader campaign just put out an email saying that both Nader and Barr have confirmed.

  • 7 Mike Gillis // Oct 29, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Does anyone know if this’ll be televised?

  • 8 AnthonyD // Oct 29, 2008 at 3:23 pm

I said elsewhere that the only debate I would approve were I in charge of the Barr campaign would be heads up vs. Nader. I stick with that opinion.

Why bother is a good question. On the other hand, if barr wants to do it, then I am all for it. Despite some opinions here, Barr did keep campaigning itinerantly even after it was clear this campaign was going to be another typical LP campaign and was not going to measure up to the promise of the R3VOLution.

    I’ve heard a rumor of a November 5th debate.

Actually not a bad idea. The candidate schedules will all be clear, and with nothing left to lose, people might enjoy hearing their take in a panel discussion on the results and what they will mean for the country and the world.

Of course, I don’t see it happening. By that point
they will all be thoroughly exhausted, and the last thing they will want to do is another quasi-campaign event. But it would be interesting.

that would be tomorrow. In general, I think debates should have a little advance notice, if you want ppl to attend.

I could probably drum up some attendance if I was on the ground. But if it is broadcast, how many people are in the live audience will matter relatively little.

Seriously though, I hope this works out and Barr actually debates.

    Me too.

The Nader campaign just put out an email saying that both Nader and Barr have confirmed.

    Awesome!

    Great stuff! About time!

  • 12 paulie cannoli // Oct 29, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Does anyone know if this’ll be televised?

I’d like to know too. Will pass on when I find out. If it’s TVed or webcast we should liveblog again, as well as the VP debate.

    http://www.ballot-access.org/2008/10/29/nader-barr-baldwin-debate-set-for-october-30-in-cleveland/#comments

On October 30, Ralph Nader, Bob Barr, and Chuck Baldwin will debate each other at the Cleveland (Ohio) City Club, between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm. The City Club is at 850 Euclid Ave, on the 2nd floor. All three participants have confirmed they will be there. Cynthia McKinney, Barack Obama, and John McCain are also invited.

  • 14 Eternaverse // Oct 29, 2008 at 4:56 pm

    from the Nader campaign:

    “It’s debate week!

Ralph Nader will appear tomorrow (Thursday October 30, 2008, 4:30 to 5:30 EST) in a Third Party debate at the City Club of Cleveland. Libertarian candidate Bob Barr and Constitution Party candidate Chuck Baldwin will participate in the debate. The three other electorally viable Presidential candidates have been invited.

Then on Sunday November 2, 2008, Matt Gonzalez will appear in three-way a vice-presidential debate in Las Vegas with the Constitution and Libertarian VP candidates. That debate is being sponsored by Free & Equal.

(By the way, in case you haven’t seen it yet, check out Matt’s most recent expose of the Obama-led corporate and militarist Democrats. We predict Obama will not address any of these issues head on tonight in his 30 minute, five network infomercial.)

C-Span will tape the City Club of Cleveland debate and show it sometime this weekend.

And the City Club will live stream the event on their website.

So, tell your friends and family to watch tomorrow afternoon.”

If McKinney and Clemente don’t make this and the Nov. 2 VP debate in Vegas, they should be ashamed of themselves, and Greens should be ashamed of them.

Particularly stupid strategically, since they are in last or next to last place by various measures among those invited.

This debate is a dream come true.

This is exactly what FREE wanted.

Barr, Nader & Baldwin are 100% confirmed.

    It’s another “real debate!”

official site for debate, now linked from Barr’s site…

well, Barr’s actually gonna debate Nader and Baldwin. how about them apples.

  • 21 Fred Church Ortiz // Oct 29, 2008 at 5:36 pm

    Flip flopper.

  • 22 Imperial // Oct 29, 2008 at 5:46 pm

It isn’t really flip-flopping. He continually said he would do a 3rd Party debate if they scheduled it properly. I think this helps Barr’s cred alot, especially if he comes out pretty well. I remember a week ago someone saying at a campaign appearance Barr planned to create a debate.

Anyone know if CSPAN or at least BTM will have it covered?

  • 23 Eternaverse // Oct 29, 2008 at 5:48 pm

Nader e-mail said C-Span will tape the City Club of Cleveland debate and show it sometime this weekend.

  • 24 paulie cannoli // Oct 29, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Perhaps if we write and email them they will agree to show it live.

  • 25 AnthonyD // Oct 29, 2008 at 6:03 pm

    paulie,

I’ll see if I can get a sign in there. That City Club is pretty sedate, so I doubt it, though.

  • 26 Tim in Ohio // Oct 29, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Damn. I’d love to go, but that would be a 6 hour drive for me.

  • 27 PJWerner // Oct 29, 2008 at 9:20 pm

AnthonyD– Where do you work? I’m a Clevelander myself! I didn’t realize there was anyone else from the greater Cleveland area that frequented this site.

  • 28 AnthonyD // Oct 29, 2008 at 11:29 pm

    PJWerner,

I work at a law firm (that shall remain nameless for the time being) at 11th and Superior Avenue, downtown. Where do you live and work at?

  • 29 mothersson2002 // Oct 30, 2008 at 12:17 am

Chuck BAldwin is also planning in attening the debate.

AnthonyD (hopefully you are still checking this entry)– I live on the Cleveland/Lakewood border. Mostly I am a grad student at CSU, where I also tutor. But I also work in Key Tower a couple days a week.

  • 32 AnthonyD // Oct 31, 2008 at 2:06 pm

    PJWerner,

Nice! We’ll have to meet up for a brew one of these days! I am not a big Lakewood guy, but I am down with the Great Lakes Brewing Company, Ohio City. Love that beer.
