W.A.R. claims to be friends with Karl Rove

September 11th, 2008 · 12 Comments

Reported on LRC via Brad Funkhouser, the following appeared in a May 21 Newsweek article on Libertarians:

Root, a millionaire, Spike TV host and former Las Vegas odds maker, is betting that the Libertarians can make it into the mainstream by attracting gamers. Root says that online poker players soured on the GOP in 2006, after the Republican Congress passed a bill restricting online poker. “There are 12 million poker enthusiasts in this country who had poker ripped away from them in 2006,” said Root. “I’m a celebrity in their world. I can bring more gravitas to the [Libertarian Party] than it has ever had before, starting with those 12 million online poker players.” Root said that he and Karl Rove—seated at Root’s kitchen table one night in 2006—debated the fate of online poker. Root said he told Rove that banning online poker would demoralize the GOP. “Rove said, ‘Wayne, that’s ridiculous. Poker?’” recalled Root. “Karl Rove laughed, and the Republican revolution ended.”

How is Root claiming that he had dinner with Rove the same as Root saying Rove is his friend?

Jesus Christ you people are pathetic.

They’re seated at his kitchen table. WTF?

You have to be kidding me.

I doubt Rove was there to have Root sign a refinanced mortgage, which was the only time in my memory that someone I wasn’t friends with has sat at my dining room table.

Even if I was friends with Rove I would not freely admit it.

Karl Rove could not make it into my kitchen. If he tried to force his way in, there would be no more Karl Rove.

    Anything less is unlibertarian.

Any possible reason for meeting with Karl Rove is unlibertarian.

Barr people = unbelievable. Anyone who still supports Barr/Root after yesterday is subhuman.

    GE,

Mattc is no Barr-hack, and has a point. Root is being critical of Rove here and never says anything good about him.

Jesus. “Friends” is a loose word. Headlines need to be concise. And what the F was Root doing with him in his kitchen if they weren’t being “friendly”? I don’t normally have racist character assassins and shills for the global empire in my kitchen.

This reminds me of Cliff Clavin’s “Jeopardy!” answer about “three people who have never been in my kitchen.”

    Why am I not surprised?

Jesus. “Friends” is a loose word. Headlines need to be concise.

Of course, this is your blog, and you can post whatever you want. But don’t try to claim that concision had anything at all to do with your choice of headline. “WAR sits at table with Rove” would have been more concise, and more accurate. “WAR debates poker with Rove” would have been more concise, and more accurate.

And BTW, I’m disgusted with Barr/WAR too, but it would be nice to have an less biased sources on this kind of info. I guess I have to read IPR and TPW and take the average.

You can be friends with a person while being disgusted by their politics. IMO, it’s a sign of maturity to be able to separate the two.

Though, in Karl Rove’s case, being friends with the person might not say great things either.

“You can be friends with a person while being disgusted by their politics. “ ????
