What does it take to get recognized as a party there?

D.C. government just means these groups have filed statements of organization. It doesn’t mean they are ballot-qualified. The only minor party that is ballot-qualified is the D.C. Statehood Green Party.

Doesn’t that mean that technically they’re not parties - they’re just organizations? Because here in PA we don’t have any political parties but the Dems and the Reps. However, we have a few minor parties like the Libertarians and Greens who are officially “organizations”.

I don’t know, seems to me like the “Cocktail Party” might be kind of fun - might get lots of secondary registrations from Congresscritters and Lobbyists as well…

I mean how could Ted Kennedy resist?

Of course, not appearing on the list is the DC Statehood Green Party, which is the 2nd party in DC:

The American Independent Party still exists in DC?

The American Independent Party’s website states that it is affiliated with America’s Independent Party. As to whether they are active in Washington D.C., that is a different question. The D.C. Political Report site, which I referenced previously is a site produced by Daniel ‘D.C.’ Finegold Sachs.

    pdsa,

Im guessing that the American Independence Party is left over from that old national entity from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Yeah, the D.C. situation is kinda odd — there are four major parties (Dem, GOP, D.C. Statehood Green, and Umoja), in which you can register. There are also “minor parties” which is basically just an identification; you register as “Other” (which is not the same as unaffiliated) and then just write in the name of the party you want to be associated with. It is pretty easy to “create” a minor party.

    Umoja? That’s a major party?

  • 12 Peter Orvetti // Sep 7, 2008 at 7:55 pm

Oh, I guess Umoja isn’t a major party anymore. It was for a while, but petered out.

What was Umoja? Isn’t that an A Tribe Called Quest album or something?

  • 14 Peter Orvetti // Sep 7, 2008 at 8:04 pm

All I know is that it was a “black” party — in a city that was about 65% black at the time of its prominence. Kinda like having a “white” party in the Deep South. Oh wait, they do.

  • 15 G.E. // Sep 7, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Why are you so damn racist, Peter?

  • 16 Trent Hill // Sep 7, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Umoja means unity — the first principle and first day of Kwanzaa.

  • 17 Trent Hill // Sep 7, 2008 at 8:54 pm

    Also,

Umoja, Kenya is a city of all-women and is usually referred to in support of Women’s rights. That could be it too.

    Racist and sexist?

  • 19 Peter Orvetti // Sep 7, 2008 at 10:10 pm

I’m just trying to fit in with the anti-immigration, pro-English, pro-”states rights” atmosphere of The New LP.

  • 20 Sivarticus // Sep 8, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Umoja, good riddance. If they were still around, I’m sure they’d be endorsing nutty McKinney along with the other Stalinist and black nationalist groups.
