Reason magazine will be hosting a “virtual” debate between Bob Barr and the two major party candidates.
From Reason’s Hit & Run blog:
As usual, the two major political parties are shutting out all third-party candidates from this season’s presidential debates, while trying to out-compete one another for how many government goodies they can promise to voters. Only this time, we have the technology to do something about it.
Please join reason, either in person or online, for a live counter-debate on Friday, Sept. 26, with Libertarian Party nominee Bob Barr, who will respond to John McCain, Barack Obama and moderator Jim Lehrer in real time. We will be live-blogging Barr’s responses at Hit & Run, and videotaping the whole proceedings, which will include a brief post-debate Q&A with reason staffers, bloggers, and other interested parties. The fun begins at 7:00 PM, the debate starts at 8:00 sharp, and the drinks will be provided by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. In a year rich with libertarian politics, the only place you’ll hear a candidate talking libertarian ideas will be in reason’s Washington headquarters.
What: Bob Barr debates the presidential debaters
When: Friday, September 26, 7:00 PM to 9:15 PM
Where: Reason HQ, 1747 Connecticut Avenue NW (near S Street)
RSVPs: A must. Send e-mail to events@reason.com, or call 310.391.2245.

umm. the word is “among” …
2 G.E. // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:02 pm
No. Barr vs. “McCain and Obama” — McCain and Obama being on entity. Hence, no serial comma.
3 songster7 // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:02 pm
oops on second thought, there ARE only two (at most) parties in the statement — McBama and BobB — so “between” is correct … ;}
4 G.E. // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Yep, you got it.
5 G.E. // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:03 pm
“one entity” not “on entity.”
6 songster7 // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:04 pm
ya beat me to it …
7 G.E. // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:06 pm
But maybe I should switch it to “McCain-Obama” or even “McBama” so people understand that’s what I meant…
8 songster7 // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:06 pm
actually the serial comma is optional nowadays, and usually obtrusive to meaning in a complex sentence.
you’d probably rather discuss the substance of this post, I guess

I’m a major believer in the serial comma, but truthfully, it is generally not used in AP-style headline writing that we try to use here, so your point is fair.
I’m always down to dish on grammar and syntax.

then here’s a sidetrack to p0nder:
Question: What is wrong with the commonly butchered phrase, “champing at the bit”?
11 songster7 // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:11 pm
oops, I blew the joke, the misuse is “chomping”
12 G.E. // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I don’t know. That could have something to do with my lack of equine knowledge, though. “Champing” is a synonym for “chomping.”

chomping

I’ll be sure to break that one out at my next bachelor party!
Especially if there’s a donkey show.

Paulie,
Do you remember the name of the perennial LP candidate who claimed he had had sex with a donkey multiple times growing up? He was a commenter at TPW for a long time.
16 paulie cannoli // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:31 pm
No, but I do remember Neal Horsley
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neal_Horsley
The perennial candidate of the Creators Rights Party. On May 5, 2005, Horsley was a guest on The Alan Colmes Show, a FOX News radio program. During that interview, and after repeated questions about his personal sinfulness, Mr. Horsley stated that when he was eleven years old he had engaged in bestiality with a mule on the farm he grew up on in Georgia. “I was a fool,” Horsley told Colmes, crediting Jesus with forgiving and cleansing him of his “sin.”
While he was not, to my knowledge, ever a commenter at TPW, he was the subject of much discussion.
IIRC, at one point GE was frequently referring to CP members as mule fuckers or some other such nicety. I think that was either in his Undercover Anarchist or Global Elitist stage, or possibly both.

Horses DO NOT “chomp” at the (metal) bit; if they did they wouldn’t have teeth for very long.
The word is “champ” — which is what you see them do, as their lips sort of massage the bit (since it is not entirely comfortable in the first place) . Damn near nobody knows this, these days, judging from TV sports (ESPN especially), news and other sources …
18 Trent Hill // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Neal Horsley was also on Alan Keyes’ show and got freaking chewed up and spit out, by ALAN FREAKING KEYES, so you know he’s not very smart.
And yes, GE’s comments then were based on this guy–who was actually part of the LP and seeking their presidential nomination (as well as the nominations of the CP and Reform parties, I think)
His name was Gene…or something.
19 paulie cannoli // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Gene Chapman.
However, he was not a perennial candidate; as far as I know he only ran once, in multiple parties, none of which were interested in him, and that certainly included the LP.
I don’t recall him ever saying he had sex with a donkey multiple times growing up. However, I do recall that some very disturbing charges about him beating/raping women and/or molesting children, as well as having promiscuous gay sex (while claiming to be a traditional Christian moral conservative) came up, and that same day or the next day all his websites disappeared.

Did Barr make it to the event, or did he miss the bus again………….
His own worst enemy!
21 johncjackson // Sep 22, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Barr has declined as he refuses to debate minor party candidates who have not obtained ballot status in Texas.
22 iamanamerican // Sep 23, 2008 at 2:21 am
Is Bob Barr scared of debating Chuck Baldwin?
= OPENDEBATES.ORG =
23 paulie cannoli // Sep 23, 2008 at 2:22 am
Yes. As well as Nader and McKinney.
How about a C4L debate with those three? Anyone here have any pull with them?

I want to see a Biden-Palin-Root debate. They’re all hilarious, in their varying ways.
