The Socialist Party USA ticket said in a news release that its Brian Moore-Stewart Alexander ticket will be the first Socialist ticket to appear on the ballot in Ohio since 1932. US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio Eastern Division Judge Edmund Sargus “ordered the state of Ohio ‘to place the Socialist Party and its candidates on the 2008 general election ballot for the state of Ohio.’ Furthermore, Ballot Access News reported today that this is the first time the Socialist Party has ever won a ballot access lawsuit in federal court, making this decision ‘of historical consequences for minor political parties in the United States’ political system,’ said presidential candidate Brian Moore.”

Actually, the Socialist Party’s press release said (accurately) that this is the first time the Socialist Party has been on the Ohio statewide ballot since 1932. It didn’t say that this is the first socialist party to be on in Ohio since then. This is one case in which capitalization makes all the difference!
The Socialist Labor Party was on with the party label in Ohio in 1946, 1970, and 1972. Also many socialist parties have been on in Ohio in the 1970′s, 1980′s, and 1990′s, but without the label. In 1992 the Workers World Party had a candidate on for US Senate in Ohio. She got an astounding 7% of the vote (in a race with both a Dem and a Rep also running).
