Libertarian Party of Texas Executive Director Wes Benedict, who now writes for Last Free Voice, has posted a challenge to Libertarians to help retire Mary Ruwart’s debt. Dr. Ruwart, who led on the fifth ballot but eventually lost to Bob Barr on Ballot #6, spent approximately $20,000 in her pursuit of the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination, and remains roughly $6,000 in the red.
Says Benedict:
I recently contributed $200 to Mary Ruwart’s campaign (on top of $500 I previously donated) to help pay off some of her debt which is still above $6,000. If you’d like to see Mary run for president again in 2012, or at least show your appreciation to her and encourage real libertarians to run in the future, please visit her website and make a contribution of $500 or $200 or whatever you can do: http://votemary2008.com
If by next Monday Mary raises $6,000, I’ll shave my head bald again as it was in 2002 when we had a radical platform. Please help. People are complaining about the little hair I’ve got.

I was just wondering what Wes was up to!
I guess I’ll have to start reading LFV.
I remain weary to Ruwart 2012.

Is Mrs. Ruwart going to do anything at all to help out Barr/Root?

It chaps my ass that electioneering in this country is debt-based. How can we hope to have a government that’s debt-free if the candidates aren’t even debt-free?
That’s not a dig at Dr. Ruwart, who I’d have voted for, it’s just a long-standing irritation of mine.

matt - By “debt,” I assume what’s meant is that Dr. Ruwart put up $6k of her own money in loans. I doubt the campaign got a bank loan.

Ah, well that’s cool, then.
Libertarian candidates have been known to leave outstanding debts. Hearing that Mary didn’t do that is just one more thing in her favor.

I’m just guessing, Matt. I don’t know for sure.

What exactly is the connection between candidates in debt and the government in debt? Don’t see it.

Dr. Ruwart… spent approximately $20,000 in her pursuit of the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination.
Seriously?!? Spent it on what? She announced so late that there was no substantial travel to various state conventions like Root in particular engaged in. The expenses I saw were long-distance calls to the Denver delegates (I got a voicemail), a vendor booth, and stack of signs and “heart” buttons that seemed to be made on a home inkjet printer. I’m not saying I don’t believe you, but sheesh… and people gripe that Barr doesn’t get enough bang for his bucks.

Steve - The FEC reports should be published soon. I looked this up myself and could not find “Ruwart.”
When is the filing deadline? Anyone know?
