Scotty Boman attacks Democratic incumbent as both ‘anti-choice’ and ‘anti-life’

July 14th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Libertarians are divided over the issue of abortion: Is abortion the initiation of force? Those who believe it is are typically “pro-life” and those who think it’s not are typically “pro-choice.” Non-libertarian politicians, though less philosophical, can normally be grouped into one of these two categories, as well. But not Democratic Senator Carl Levin, says Scotty Boman.

Less than a year ago one of my rivals, incumbent Democratic Senator Carl Levin, proved himself to be anti-choice and anti-life when he voted to allow federal funding for providers and advocates of FORCED abortions and sterilizations. Yes. You read that correctly. This was not about simply subsidizing abortions and sterilizations. This was about forcing them on people.

This amendment appears to have been a rider on HR 2764: Inclusion of Iraq and Afghanistan Military Operations Funding with the Consolidated Appropriations, so it is possible that Levin voted against it for reasons other than disagreement with its contents.

Here is an issue statement from Levin:

Senator Levin is a cosponsor of the Prevention First Act (S.21) which was introduced on January 4, 2007. This bill stresses the importance of medically accurate education; access to emergency contraception, especially in cases of rape; and teenage pregnancy prevention. Senator Levin believes that the best way to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases is to provide education on the benefits of both abstinence and contraception.

Beyond disagreement with its contents, what would the incentive be to vote against the ammendment itself?

SA 2707. Mr. BROWNBACK (for himself, Mr. Martinez, Mr. Vitter, and Mr. Coleman) proposed an amendment to the bill H.R. 2764, making appropriations for the Department of State, foreign operations, and related programs for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2008, and for other purposes; as follows:

On page 240, beginning on line 4, strike “

Provided” and all that follows through “sterilization:” on line 9 and insert “Provided further, That none of the funds made available in this Act nor any unobligated balances from prior appropriations may be made available to any organization or program which, as determined by the President, supports, or participates in the management of, a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization:”.

If abstinence and contraception education are the best way to prevent unwanted pregnancy and stds, where do coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization rank?
