Rhode Island Greens begin petitioning

In a press release issued today, the Green Party of Phode Island announced the beginning of their petition drive. The press release follows:

Plans Underway for Green Presidential Candidate on RI Ballot

The Green Party of Rhode Island filed papers with the RI Secretary of State’s office today to begin the process of placing the Green Party Presidential nominee on the ballot. Beginning July 1, the Green Party of Rhode Island will collect signatures on official petitions. Petitions must be turned in by early September and 1000 valid signatures from registered Rhode Island voters are required to get on the ballot.

Green party petitioners will be out on the streets of Rhode Island all summer petitioning at coffee shops, and events like Waterfire, concerts, and festivals. Everyone who wants more choices in the November election is encouraged to sign the petition and we welcome anyone who wants to help petition.

GPRI Presidential Campaign Coordinator Greg Gerritt noted, “The Green party has 4 excellent candidates competing for the nomination: Jesse Johnson, Cynthia McKinney, Kent Mesplay, and Kat Swift. The nomination will be decided at the Green Party Nominating Convention in Chicago that begins July 10. RI law requires us to file now, and collect signatures carrying the names of our Presidential electors, and we are very excited about the campaign.”

Green Party of Rhode Island Chair Eric Siegel pointed out that “three fourths of the Greens in RI supported former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney for the nomination and right now she has a formidable lead for the nomination, though not yet a majority of delegates from around the country. We shall tout McKinney in our petitioning prior to the convention, with post-convention petitioning focusing on the nominee whoever it is.” He added, “The increasing hypocrisy of both major party candidates shows just how much we need a true alternative in this race. The party of the rich vs. the party of the rich isn’t really much of a contest.”
