New Mexico independent candidate for U.S. Congress, Carol Miller, has released a high-quality video intended to introduce her to voters in her district. However, for many constituents, Ms. Miller will need no introduction. As the video makes clear, Miller has had ample community involvement.
This is also not Miller’s first run for office. In 1997, as the Green Party’s candidate in a special election to replace Bill Richardson (who had been appointed to a U.N. ambassadorship), Carol Miller received 17% of the vote and was labeled a “spoiler” for allegedly causing the Republican candidate to win. Richardson himself did not bear her any malice, though. Later, as Governor, he appointed Miller to the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education.
Miller is opposed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the “military economy.” She says we “must have a universal health care system in the United States,” and cites figures indicating that as many as 18,000 Americans die each year for no other reason than not having health insurance.
Miller has previously run in 1997 and 1998 as a Green Party candidate, but decided to run as a pure independent this time because she feels that partisan politics have been bad for New Mexico. Miller collected more than 12,000 signatures in order to adhere to this principle.
