The Washington Post ran a Style section profile of Ralph Nader on Wednesday. The article says Nader “still gets hate mail. Strangers stop him to dress him down. Friends and associates who supported him eight years ago have moved on. Worse, people who revered him for decades of advocacy on behalf of a zillion good causes — from auto safety to environmental protection to the Freedom of Information Act — curse his name.”
But even “shunned and marginalized,” Nader, now 74, is “running for president for the fifth time. ‘It’s the rational approach,’ he declares. ‘If you’re locked out of the governmental system, if you can’t get a hearing, and I can’t, you go to the electoral system. What’s my alternative? Should I go to Monterey and watch the whales?’”

Should I go to Monterey and watch the whales?
Yes, absolutely.

He’d probably tell the whales to slow down and put on helmets.

When you put it that way…stay the fuck away from the whales, Ralph!

What’s my alternative?
Your alternative is to pass the baton, Ralph, rather than being a selfish waste of the electorate’s time. Again.

Nader’s reasoning is interesting.
I wrote a letter to my congressional delegate (I live in D.C., so no rep.) some time ago, and I never heard back — I couldn’t “get a hearing,” in Nader’s words. Ergo, following Nader, my only recourse is to run for president.
