Florida’s Herald Tribune writes about three “mystery candidates” who filed for Florida legislative races “in the last hours before Friday’s noon deadline.” The three “entered three of the most heated races in the state for incumbents,” and the “suspicion among some Tallahassee folks is that the candidates representing the left-leaning party were entered by Republicans solely to siphon off a few votes from the Democrats.” Green Party of Florida spokeswoman Julia Aires said she “had never heard of the three candidates, adding that she and her fellow members would have vetted and endorsed any candidates carrying the party’s banner.” The candidates are Horacio Lemus, Anthony Mauro, and Aniana Robas.

This is an interesting consequence of the recent change in the law, that mandates primaries for qualified minor parties, instead of nominating conventions. Now, there is no protection for minor parties from total strangers changing registration to that party and entering its primary. The only protection would have been for the Green Party to run someone against them, but that is no help if the Green Party didn’t want any nominees in that race.
