Last night, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) formally introduced articles of impeachment against President Bush citing 35 “high crimes and misdemeanors.” The “corporate media,” according to John Murphy, an independent for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 16th district, was too busy covering frivolous stories to notice.
Below is a media release issued by the Murphy campaign:
CHESTER COUNTY, PA – According to John Murphy independent candidate for Congress in the 16th district “while Congressman Dennis Kucinich was introducing articles of impeachment against President Bush charging 35 counts of high crimes and misdemeanors ABC was covering a story about sending e-mails from heaven, CNN was covering a story about whether or not Obama was black or biracial and MSNBC was hot on the trail of a story about a brave man who managed to prevent his outhouse from being taken. No wonder the United States is ranked 57th in terms of freedom of the press”. Only C-SPAN covered the story.
“So far”, continued Murphy “the only difference between the Democrats and Republicans is that the Republicans were willing to impeach a president for lying under oath about sex while the Democrats are unwilling to impeach a president who lied to us about the reasons for invading two other countries, who has trashed the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, who has conducted illegal surveillance on American citizens, who has ignored treaties, violated international law, approved torture and eliminated the right of habeas corpus”. The first article Kucinich introduced dealt with the war in Iraq: “Creating a secret propaganda campaign to manufacture a false case for war against Iraq.”
“Democrat House leaders have opposed impeaching Bush or Cheney as an useless distraction,” Murphy charged; “but they were nearly embarrassed last year when Republicans voted to take up Kucinich’s attempt to impeach Vice President Cheney in order to force a debate. The Democrats are unlikely to let the matter get so far this time.
“There is one interesting development that could force the Democrat Party to see that justice is done,” suggested Congressional candidate John Murphy. “At the same time the bill of impeachment was introduced, former presidential press secretary Scott McClellan accepted House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers’ invitation to testify on June 20”.
Seventy percent of the American people favor the impeachment of President Bush yet he will not be impeached. According to Murphy “because of what has become of the American people. Think back how Americans looked with lust upon the destruction of Baghdad and sat by the TV transfixed by the light show given to us by CNN as of thousands of innocent Iraqis were murdered – shock and awe.
“We suffer,” added John Murphy, “from what political scientists call ‘American exceptionalism’. Americans can wage war on anyone and give it the blessing of angry, preposterous patriotism which allows us to excuse our actions in the name of spreading liberty and democracy. The delicious fervor with which we went about the destruction of Iraq and changed French fries into freedom fries is too fresh in the American psyche so both Congress and the corporate media fear to deal with the crimes of the Bush administration. Impeaching Bush would force Americans to face the reality that we have become a bloodthirsty nation easily lead to invade any country the government and its compliant lapdog media singles out as a target. We would be forced to face the reality that it is the United States which has become a terrorist nation and the greatest threat to world peace,” Murphy concluded.
