I agree. So is Nevada’s,from what I understand.

CA’s AIP suffers from the fact that many of its registered voters joined the party between 1967 and 1976–and are most likely now Republican voters who simply forgot to re-register.

The CA registration form is definitely pretty clear, assuming a person actually reads what he’s filling out.

I did a report over at TPW, long ago, about how much the registration numbers were inflated in the IAP and AIP. I believe my conclusion was that the IAP was only inflated by 10-15%, and the AIP was only about 1/3rd as large as its registrations.

I’d really like to see what a Nevada voter registration form looks like. How many of these people realize that they’re even registered with the party and not just as independents?

If my understanding is correct–total voters matters for one crucial reason. 10% of registered voters makes a major party in Nevada–and they count using ALL voters.

If one uses the Nevada Secretary of State’s web page to look at the active voter data, that shows for April 2008 that there are 39,578 Independent American Party registrants. That is 3.79% of the state active registration. The IAP registration in February 2008 was 3.82%. So there hasn’t been any meaningful change in the last two months. Sure it’s fun to use the inactive voter data, but it is relatively meaningless. The people on the inactive list have moved away from the address they are listed under, and for the most part are duplicates. People on the inactive list can’t vote unless they swear the post office made a mistake. They can’t sign petitions. Most states don’t even post data for the inactive voters.
