Bob Barr: FDA should not regulate tobacco

June 3rd, 2008 · 3 Comments

In its continuing media blitz, the Bob Barr campaign issued a second press release today, condemning plans for the FDA to regulate tobacco.

“We should be particularly skeptical when a major business, in this case Philip Morris, lobbies for regulation,” notes Barr. That usually means the proposal is written to benefit a particular company or interest rather than the public. “If we want to preserve America’s prosperity and freedom, we need to be cutting, not increasing, regulation,” adds Barr.

This is a press release I can wholeheartedly endorse!

Barr’s right, tobacco regulation does favor the biggest companies. It’s a shame how many small tobacco producers have gone out of business or been forced to sell out to the big conglomerates (of which only three or four still exist, according to my tobacconist).

I hope this helps him in NC.

Slightly OT, but judging from the tone of Barr’s slew of press releases, I’m starting to feel secure that he intends to run a primarily libertarian-themed campaign instead of a “disgruntled conservative” campaign.
