May 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments
We’ve just added a chatroom to the homepage of Independent Political Report.
We’re going to leave this room active tonight for the debate and then through the nomination fight tomorrow. That way people can discuss in real-time while watching on C-SPAN. Or even from the convention itself, for any of the folks there [...]

Mary’s speech moves woman to tears, inspires converts and contributors
May 24th, 2008 · 6 Comments
Mary Ruwart spoke today at 12:30 p.m., local time. After the speech, several people wearing buttons for other candidates — Christine Smith, Root, and Barr — came to Mary’s booth and said they had been converted. They took off their old buttons and replaced them with Mary stickers. One woman was moved to tears and [...]

Doug Stanhope asks about Robert Milnes
May 24th, 2008 · 10 Comments
Doug Stanhope is in Denver for the LP convention.
“Where’s Robert Milnes?” he asked.
Apparently, Milnes had sent out a request for donations to help him get to Denver. Stanhope responded and asked Milnes what it would take to get him to Denver. He asked Milnes to send the reply to an alternate e-mail address, but Milnes [...]

‘Bin-Laden partner’ endorses Barr, Barr accepts
May 24th, 2008 · 11 Comments
After failing to receive enough tokens to enter tonight’s debate, Daniel Imperato publicly endorsed Bob Barr. Barr accepted.
If Barr had attended last night’s “unofficial and all-inclusive” debate, he would have known that Imperato claims to have been in business with the bin-Laden family. He also claims to know George W. Bush very well. When questioned [...]

C-SPAN: Six candidates will debate tonight
May 24th, 2008 · 7 Comments
According to the C-SPAN website, there are six candidates who will participate in tonight’s Presidential debate to be televised at 9pm Eastern. It doesn’t name them by name, but it’s probably safe to assume it’s Barr, Ruwart, Phillies, Kubby, Root, and Gravel.
I don’t know what the rules are on the tokens or if it’s [...]

Would Barr consider a GOP run in 2012?
May 24th, 2008 · 19 Comments
I just heard from a friend of mine who stresses that he wishes to remain anonymous. He’s attending the convention as a delegate and told me about a conversation he had with a Barr supporter (late) last night over some drinks.
Apparently, the Barr supporter wanted to convince my friend to leave his candidate of [...]

George Phillies receives mixed response from debate crowd
May 24th, 2008 · 4 Comments
The rap on George Phillies is that he’s a poor speaker. Perhaps he was at one point, but few people in Denver who’ve seen him in action are likely to agree.
Phillies received lots of applause and laughter at his jokes last night. His wit is probably unmatched by the field of candidates.
When asked how he [...]

Steve Kubby surprising delegates
May 24th, 2008 · 9 Comments
Several delegates have said they’ve been pleasantly surprised with Steve Kubby’s performance at the convention.
“He looks healthy, and he has a lot of enthusiasm,” said one delegate.
Steve Kubby has been one of the top performers, by most delegates’ accounts, at both the Libertarians for Justice forum and the “unofficial, all-inclusive” debate.
“If he could have come [...]

Gravel supporters will not back Barr on subsequent ballots
May 24th, 2008 · 6 Comments
Many libertarians have theorized that Bob Barr may be able to pick up the delegates of Wayne Allyn Root and Mike Gravel on subsequent ballots — Root, because of their shared Republican backgrounds; and Gravel due to their shared “celebrity” status. Barr and Root delegates may yet combine, but Gravel supporters are among the most [...]

Gravel refutes W.A.R., impresses libertarian audience
May 24th, 2008 · 8 Comments
Mike Gravel has a fairly large entourage of leftists who followed him into the Libertarian Party and managed to get credentialed as delegates. Not large enough to make a serious run at the nomination, at least not on the first ballot, but enough diehards to give him the loudest applause at multi-candidate events. However, tonight [...]
